Post-College Options

You are very very young and could still do any number of things. Why are you turned off by law now?

While political science is not the most practical degree, I wouldn't call it useless. I know a few people that majored in it and some went into marketing/business. There are also a lot if office jobs that require a degree but arent specific like human resources. You can even intern or work as a legal assistant in a law office to see what being a lawyer is really about. Parents pressure is one of the worst reasons to attend law school. Law school is no joke and most attorneys dont make enough to justify the cost of law school plus the stress. I worked around attorneys and most didnt enjoy it and regretted it. Especially the ones who did it out of prestige or pressure. Don't try to panic too much , so many people in college or who just graduated go through what you are going through.

There are probably a lot of jobs in the non profit space where having a poli-sci degree is useful, and hopefully you can find a good org. where you can make a difference!

There’s always options, just that your path may not look conventional. Many people at this age would still be figuring out a balance between what they’re good at and what they enjoy doing. It’s fine to take on a handful of internships and explore - unless you’ve been exposed to it, you won’t know where to begin.

I would say focus on finishing your degree well and don’t waste it, because it’s your base qualification towards finding another path. It’s proof you can accomplish something. Talk to people who know you well and professors who may be able to introduce you to other options. Look through LinkedIn job postings for a variety of jobs and look at the background they ask for.

You’re young and it’s not too late (ever). Best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. Second best time is today. But you need to discover yourself first in order to know which tree to plant.

As others have said, you do have lots of non-law school options with a political science bachelor's degree. But it's also never too late to change routes, you're very young!

I'm also on the boat of not getting a degree just to have it, especially if you are accruing debt to get it. I would say take some time to consider what you actually enjoy and what interests you. Maybe take a semester off and work in some jobs you find interesting. I feel that sometimes we push going adults into college way too hard and too early for them to really know what will suit them in the long run.

I'm 25 with a one year old. An associates in nursing, certified as a Lactation consultant and a doula, working on a bachelor's in psych, with plans to do a master's in occupational therapy. But I've considered tons of different avenues before this. I've worked with children and considered becoming a teacher, I worked with children specifically in the foster care system and considered becoming a social worker. I considered becoming a therapist, and I also looked into becoming a midwife, and I've worked in birth centers. I looked into teaching yoga and massage therapy many moons ago too.

Though none of those paths were inherently wrong, it took months of research and sometimes years of experience to figure out the nuances of each path and why they wouldn't suit me, at least at this life stage. I also have very unique experiences with my daughter receiving feeding and occupational therapy that gave me a level of personal understanding about the career.

I personally plan to be mostly home, but work maybe 10-15 hours a week. And it's education that will greatly help me in my own home as well, we plan to homeschool.

But all that to say, is don't feel that you have to have everything figured out and planned out right now. You're so young and have so much time. And personal education and development that happens outside of college can be just as important, if not more important, than the development that happens inside college.

It's okay to take some time and find a path that you feel really suits you. It's also okay to power through the degree to get into the workforce and pursue a different path than one strictly related to your degree. It's also okay to consider graduate school carefully with lots of research into costs and the kind of life aspirations you have, and a graduate program totally different from your undergrad. It's also okay to take some time off school, work a few jobs, and help figure out what your strengths and weaknesses are, and what kind of jobs would fit your life aspirations.

No degree is worthless. You can get into marketing or business. Why did you change your mind about law school? If you don’t want to be a trial lawyer, you could work for a big law firm and handle only estates, or similar less stressful fields. Think about it. Or, go ahead and graduate and work for a few years to see what direction you want to go. Oh? If I could only be your age. You have the world in front of you. No need to make rash decisions...you have time on your side. But don’t quit college. Your degree isn’t going to be worthless.

You could pull out now and start pursuing a career as a daycare teacher or a nanny. You get to be trained & practice being a good mother and caretaker while get paid for it. What do you think?

My degree is poli-sci(had originally planned on law school but changed my mind)and I work in banking.

I've never had an issue getting a job, although you may have to be flexible about what career you end up with. Otherwise you need to make a decision now, and work on gaining qualifications over the next year to get you into a specific field.

Please OP, go to law school if you can stomach it! You're so young! For some reason, I have a lot of women around me who are both moms and lawyers, and it seems like such a great life. They have flexible jobs, take off months at a time for their family needs, and I'm sure there are even stay at home work options. Plus, with that education, your family will never be super vulnerable, and that is SUCH a good feeling.

I love being a SAHM, but I wish I would have become a lawyer, doctor, or a nurse on the way to where I am. I always wanted to work in a lab, and now I know science was pretty much the worst possible career option I could have picked. Still, I'm so happy I have a master's, and I know if something happened to my hubby we would be okay.
