Dopamine abuse is an interesting thing. Basically don't do things that feel good after not doing anything productive. Ever wonder why happy hour is a thing? People finished working hard all day and reward themselves with a beer. Fun things are good and all but you need a time for work and a time for play.

I can't commend you enough on this guide, it's literally word for word how i beat depression. i even thought i came up with the idea physical/spiritual/mental only i called it mind/body/soul (guitar/mma/meditation).

You have to take the control of your life. And control comes with responsiblity.

This is literally the most important part of beating depression, understanding that people are choosing to be depressed.

this needs so much more exposure, i'm tired of hearing "i'm depressed, it's a disease, it's not my fault!!!"

The whole dopamine idea is starting to get associated with pseudoscience but there is something behind the idea of having a limited amount of enjoyment in a day. If you masturbate and watch porn, you're going to enjoy reading a book a lot less. You set the bar for stimulation and it can be hard to leap the hurdle, especially for a something with a slow cook or delayed grat. If you spend too much of it on cheap little diversions like bejeweled or Netflix, you're gonna have less for reading and meditation. I don't know about anyone else, but this has been my experience.

I think one of the big misconceptions about depression is that it always makes you "feel bad"; people often think about feelings of sadness, misery, loneliness, etc. when thinking about depression.

I think one of the most dangerous types of depression is the type that doesn't make you feel bad, but instead just makes you feel apathetic and very neutral. You're don't feel bored, or lonely, or sad, or miserable, or angry, you just don't really feel anything one way or the other.

The reason I say that I believe it's one of the most dangerous kinds of depression is because I believe it's the type you're least likely to actually deal with. What ends up happening though is you have those 15 hour long "naps" every other day, or you sit in front of your PC and browse sites like Reddit only to look up at the clock and see that 8 hours has gone by.

It's the kind of depression that essentially robs your life of purpose, and your brain eventually just accepts it as "normal."

That said, pretty much everything OP has in his list of things to cope with depression (physical activity, meditation, healthy diet/lifestyle, etc.) will help with this kind of depression just like any other type. Basically you just need to consciously and deliberately give your life more purpose, give yourself a reason to stand up and go do something you find productive, whether that's helping yourself, helping a friend, whatever it may be.

Interacting with other people is another big one. Even if you're the most introverted person you can think of, we humans still need at least some small degree of human contact and socialization. Hobby clubs, amateur athletic clubs, gyms, etc. can be great places to meet like-minded people and this can go a long way at giving your life purpose (personally joining a local MMA gym was one of the best things I ever did, I'm not even great at MMA but I love it and being around other people who also love it is a great thing).

So basically the point of all this is just to say that if you're someone who isn't necessarily sad or miserable, but you find that maybe you're a bit apathetic, unmotivated, or generally just feel somewhat lazy, you might suffer hugely from depression, just not the same kind of depression most people think of, and in my opinion the best solution is to find ways to give your life purpose, a reason to get out of bed everyday and then begin to add as many reasons to your life as possible as time goes by.

I struggled with chronic depression and anxiety for many years. Meditation helps, slowly. It helps because the brain cells can't repair as well while synapses are crossing them, and sleep does not prioritize brain repair. Meditation allows the body to repair the natural decay of the cells. But brain cell repair is a Sisyphean effort, because the brain is always working. That's why it takes a long time. Don't be put off by the term "meditation"- any sustained mental break will do the job as long as you don't fall asleep. The hardest part is disciplining yourself to do it.

In regard to blocking negative self-dialogues a very effective is to shock yourself with an electric collar every time such thoughts emerge. I implemented that and stopped the decade of self loathing almost instantly. Not that it automatically turns you into an alpha but it's an absolutely necessary step.

They removed it for good reason you fucking asswhipe. Clinical depression can not be overcome without a chemical intervention. Exercise or drug therapy. You are advocating self help for something that almost universally needs external help.

Your advice is dangerous and it's bullshit!

Sorry for my superficial criticism but yelling at your father and feeling bad about it...not going to the gym...lack of vitamins...are these even real problems? If your depression is caused by these jokes I doubt it's depression. It's quite likely just feeling down or weak. I have two friends I know really well that are struggling like me with serious depression. This guide should only apply to people feeling "down". Depression should be treated with ssri & co while working to solve the problems that caused it. This kind of self help guide is well meaning and in many cases probably useful, but dangerous. There are people that need the help of a specialist.
