Saturday was an all-day support for sons High School function. It was fun. I was one of the “Cool Dads” who seemed to know what to do in a highly stressful and fluid situation. School athletic director failed to see the whole calendar and thus allowed 3 regional athletic events and 1 regional drum line event all scheduled on the same Saturday. 2000+ kids, parents, busses, trucks & trailers and big rigs all vying for parking at the local high school. A COMPLETE MESS!

MRP has helped me come a LONG, LONG WAY in keeping frame and a jovial attitude which spread to the other parent volunteers. It helped an already FUBAR situation from getting worse.

The failed test came when wife asks for a diet coke at the ticket desk (which she couldn’t’ leave and I was able to move around.) No problem, I can help with that. I ended up bringing her a cold 2L bottle instead of the 20oz one thinking that more is better and would last longer.

Wife, upon seeing the 2L bottle, gets snarky as it is not as convenient as the 20oz bottle. Her friend is immediately embarrassed and says “thanks [RecoveringBPaddict], this is really nice and thoughtful of you!” Perhaps being a bit rattled by the crazy cluster the event had turned into, I didn’t say anything, walked the 10 feet to the concession stand and got her a styrofoam cup. I then brewed about her disrespect all weekend.

It dawned on me within the last hour that this was a total shit test and I completely failed it. I could have AA’d and said something like “Oh your right!” This is so inconvenient”, then walked off with the diet coke never to be seen again all day or something to that effect.

What is meaningful to me now is that if I am brewing about this [or any interaction with another human being for that matter] then it is most likely a function of me failing a shit test or enforcing a healthy boundary. If I am upset, it is most likely my fault. I need to get stronger with my frame “in the moment” and build my shit test handling skills.

What else am I missing?
