In addition to this (cool list by the way) this only works if you turn topics into conversation, don’t commit the rookie error of asking, getting a response then frantically thinking of the next question. Then you’re basically back to square one. Conversation is an art, not a difficult one...but for those who need things like this, conversation is an art you have to master, or you’ll always be struggling. Go forth and conquer

These articles are so dumb. And women wonder why men treat dates like job interviews, asking question after question?

Questions are one of several tools in your conversational toolbox, and shouldn’t be relied on exclusively. In fact, you can ask the dumbest questions, but it’s really not a big deal if the rest of your game is tight. It’s just easier for recent online college “journalism” grads to write articles about good questions to ask on dates than it is to write “How to be funnier than Russell Peters without constantly resorting to race jokes”.

Humour, storytelling, emotional connection, and energy level are the other main tools you have (that I can think of offhand anyway) and are not-so-coincidentally the same tools you use to interact with your guy friends. Often the things you’ll say will fall into more than one category. The only difference is that you have to consider your audience and may have to taper the edginess a little bit (not a lot though, inauthenticity is far worse and is always obvious).

Finally, there is only one additional conversational tool that is unique to dating: flirtation. If you have a good social life, but suck at dates, you’re probably failing at escalating flirtation correctly. I try to date with the goal of both of us having a good time (dating is an emotional game - learn to date like a woman!) and throwing in enough escalating flirtation for her to feel comfortable knowing that I’m interested (but not committed).

PS Awkwardness is a state of mind. There’s nothing wrong with occasional silences. If you act like a boss, treat it like it’s no big deal, and speak when you have something you want to say, you’re fine. If you act all nervous about it and clam up or jump into verbal diarrhoea, you’ll do worse.

Edit: Some of these questions CAN have some actual value BTW. If she’s into pop psychology, Meyers-Briggs can be a fun way to get into talking about each others’ personalities. Asking about family relations is a great screening tool for sanity/daddy issues (it’s a thing, and it’s not as fun as you might think). Asking about TV/music can be a great springboard into further conversation, especially if you have good knowledge/taste in media.

Most of these are weird as fuck, you start asking stuff like ‘what’s your dream house?’ And ‘what’s your favorite Disney villain?’ Doubt you’re gonna be gettin any.. like did a fucking mormon write this list? Are you gonna go from Disney movies to fucking in the bathroom? Lol just grab some beers and chat+escalate

I find it funny how hard it is being on dating apps to try to get a first date and meet a girl regardless of how well the convo goes for the most part. Versus I literally just met a girl yesterday in person(her mom was in my DUI class and she gave me and her mom a ride home) and just how I am in person(not a crazy stud but definitely personable) she wanted me to come over and have a beer and we talked all day and night and then had sex. Not bragging just annoying how much easier shit is in person(atleast for me not speaking for everyone) versus when I match with a girl on tinder or w.e. and its like trying to peel the skin off grapes with a q-tip...

Vague answers aren't too bad. It gives you time to practice your wit. If she says she likes reading, you could say " oh yeah, everyone reads playboy for the articles".

If she says she likes to dance" i would do ballet too but, the tootoo didn't match my eyes'.

Basically you imply the specifics, it doesn't have to be right or even that funny. You imply to get her to either correct you or play into your narrative.

I dunno. I feel like these questions are so random and not worth a genuine conversation. Although please tell me how-- what I was thinking shouldn't be an issue.

I've never been on a date but when I talk to a guy through phone, I always see myself leaving dead air constantly--thinking what to say and it frustrates me. I keep holding back lol

People in deep rapport with one another never sit around asking each other questions - they tell stories and speak in statements. That's the level of conversation you want to assume and practice whether it's on a dating app, texting back and forth and on a first date.

These are great. Actually practical. If every guy thought of five decent questions the date would flow so much better. It's like planning for a job interview.
