See this graph on how the start of relations evolved over time.

The rise of college and online dating has created a much more open SMP and is a major contributor to the rise in sexual/relationship inequality.

In the past, more of us would be helping friends and family. "No problemo, bro, I have two smoke shows I know, ready to go." Actually, hell, I'll do that anyway, since I am still conservative wrt my own family.

Now, people are becoming disconnected, even from their own families. It's easier to leave your local community and adapt elsewhere. Everyone can adjust to a new place with Google Maps, Yelp, online delivery services, online dating, etc. We can move away from our families and friends and still rationalize that we're connected through phone and internet. We don't even need to knock on our neighbours' doors to ask for tools. We can order shit from online and get it within 1-2 days.

None of this stuff helps when we need an SO that isn't long distance.

Disconnected individuals makes it much easier for there to be a competitive, mercenary SMP. Homogeneous, high trust, connected communities allow for more traditional setups. Reputation sticks around when people know each other.

This is more a problem for foreigners trying to adjust to the open SMP from their traditional cultures, but I suspect this is an issue for everyone else to a degree as well.
