From a statistic I saw a few years ago posted on a long thread about insurance rates— women drive 40% of the total driving time, but account for something like 60% of all responsible parties in auto accidents?
This was brought up because the question originally asked was “why is health insurance so expensive for women and car insurance so expensive for men?”

Yeah that was the stat I saw. Or it was about 30% of total driving time and 60% accidents. I'll double check it. But I looked it up because some girl said women were safer drivers, and it wasn't so in my personal experience.

Edit 2: it's weird that these articles don't really show much of the data. I thought that there was another distribution that men are more likely to have more expensive accidents, like flipping a car on the highway, while women were more likely to hit things at low speeds.
Kind of like those IQ distributions where both men and women have pretty similar mean intelligence, but men have a wider distribution so more geniuses are men, but also a lot more of the morons are also men.

Yeah that's an interesting one. I think it might have something to do with men driving bigger or faster vehicles. Uber did a study that found males drive about 5% faster than female uber drivers.

Except it is. Men drive more miles, in more dangerous conditions, and drive larger and less safe vehicles, and have about 30 percent more accidents than women in total. Therefore statistically men (despite being at more risk) are safer drivers. Per mile driven women are 60% more likely to be in an accident.

And every time my girlfriend drives I notice her lack of spatial awareness and planning. Honestly, same thing in my other anecdotal experiences with women driving. They tend to be less aggressive and “safer” in that regard, but not as focused or proactive with their planning for what’s going to happen next. This may be more of a general people problem, because everyone sucks at driving and makes oblivious decisions, but I just notice it’s worse with women in my experience. Now, super aggressive dangerous drivers are almost always men, so it’s a wash. Man, this is gonna get torn to bits. Oh well.

Uber produced an extensive study as to why, on average, their male drivers were paid more than their female counterparts. Essentially came down to driving slightly faster, willing to work later at night/peak times that aren't desirable, and pickup in less desirable areas. More or less, more work = more pay. Pretty gender neutral.

Yup. Per vehicle-mile once you look at 25+ women have more accidents and it just gets worse with age. Guys 16-24 do have more accidents per mile driven though.
I can't find more recent studies for actual numbers because paywalls, but this has some valid numbers and I can't imagine the difference in rates between genders changing, even if better tech has reduced the overall incidents in general:

Not many say they're better drivers. Most studies show they are worse. They on average drive less, and on average did less "stupid stuff" in cars during their teenage years (hormones) so don't have the same understanding of a vehicles limitations.

Drive about twice as much, make up basically 100% of the higher risk professions (Trucking, Hauling, Couriers, People who drive a lot late at night or with little sleep such as overnight fitters/labourers), drive cars with about twice as much power on average, pick harder and less safe cars to drive on average, drive faster on average yet somehow crash about the same amount per mile. Women also statistically almost all choose not to drive in adverse conditions (snow ice fog) this appears at first glance to be a sign of responsibility but really all it means is that the men have to drive in bad conditions and take the associated risk, SOMEONE has to drive in the snow.

I worked in insurance and asked one of the adjusters about the rates between men and women. I was told that studies had been done that found accident rates were similar with women being involved in more accidents, but men had a higher payout per loss.
I'm sure if you looked into it, the higher payouts are a result of men driving more expensive vehicles. Men like nice cars while women can't tell the difference between a Honda and a Maserati.

Just general observations, but what I've mostly noticed is that when there's a bad male driver, he's speeding and driving aggressively. When there's a bad female driver she doesn't seem to have any lane discipline or knowledge on how to give way.

Yes, most of the regulations are there to "help" level the playing field, teams like Ferrari/Merc/Red Bull have exponentially more money to put into R&D, without restrictions these teams would be on a league of their own, and the likes of Williams/Toro Rosso wouldn't be able to keep up anymore.
Then there's the number of teams, we just have 10 ATM, that's 20 cars, which is not a lot. When Force India went bankrupt it was agreed to "bend" the rules just to keep them racing, that tells you the current state of F1.

Point 1: Put an F1 driver in an NHRA race and they look like a fool against another pro. Just like soccer vs baseball would make pro teams look like fools.
Point 2: opportunity cost and price of entry. It's been proven time over time over time that there are better drivers than 'the best' whom cannot get a seat because of 'their look' or 'marketability' in motorsports.
Point 3: 'Talent pool' and 'pinnacle of motorsports' there's a reason the same people win baja or pikes peak or isle of man every. single. year. and none of them you've heard of or ever will. F1 is a grandiose mess of euro circlejerking. The FIA has done its best to keep things under control and now it's a watered down version of what it once was. While I admit and agree the cars are rocketships, there's so much 'safety' engineered in to them, they're not hard to pilot, but the learning curve is steep. F1 is to GT/GTP/touring what NASCAR is to World of Outlaws. Sure there's the world-class drivers like Tony Stewart and a couple WoO guys have raced NASCAR for a while. It's a soulless blend of rule bending and wallet flexing to use as a billboard. Land speed racing, motorcycles, and lawnmowers are the last bastion of badass motorsports.

I've heard also that a lot of accidents that women get into are very minor in compared to the accidents men get into. Lots of little bumps here and there with no claims vs bigger accidents. I've heard this statistic before. It's based on tickets issued. I can guarantee you I'm a better driver than my wife, she'd say the same. Thing is, I've been pulled over 3 times and ticketed 3 times. She's been pulled over 4 times, clean record. There's a slight bias to the statistics.

That article bases the claim on the fact that women cause less accidents than men, which isn't actually the sole indication of what makes a "good driver". Technically, overly careful drivers are bad drivers as they single handedly fuck up traffic around them in a very significant way, and there are far more female "careful drivers" than men. The article also doesn't mention that while men get it more accidents, they also drive 40 percent more than women.
Having said that, I don't think there is any signficant metric to declare that men or women are better at driving than the other, especially in this day and age where we have women being super confident, which translates to the road, and men running around like soy-soaked spineless doormats, which also translates to the road.

I don’t know about recently, but in 2002 during a driver safety course, a State Farm insurance agent was going over how they adjust rates, and why your age/sex/marital status is important to figuring out your rate. Women on average had 8x more accidents than men in the 16-21 age range, and 6x as many between 21-25, and something like 3.5x as many from 25+. The rate went down once they were married presumably because they drove their own car less and for shorter, more familiar routes (school, work, mall, etc.). The reason men’s rates are higher (pre-accident) in the younger driver range is because typically women have recoverable accidents, meaning fender benders: Think “oops I backed into a fence” or “derp I hit my own mailbox.” Men typically have significantly higher costs because they typically don’t hit inanimate objects at low speed; theirs are usually compound scenarios at higher speeds. Someone merges in front of you and there’s little you can do so you swerve, hit one or more cars or the car goes off the road, resulting in total loss of at least one car. The average insurance payout for a female accident was about $800, whereas the average male accident was $10,000+ per incident.

I used to work for a car insurance company, just on the phones. Every so often a young guy would ask me, “Why is car insurance more expensive for us?” It’s because there are more young guys on the roads. This is my own subjective experience with driving cars. I'm a guy from MN and my friends and i have intentionally caused our cars to go in to controlled slides until we started to lose control then we corrected them. That is basically what you do in a winter driving course, you intentionally slide a vehicle so you can understand how a vehicle behaves in that situation and how to correct it. Whenever my friends and i start to lose control of our cars, in an unintentional slide, we calmly and instinctually correct it without the slightest spike in adrenaline. Ive been in cars with women where they start to lose control and they have always freaked out and not managed to regain control of the vehicle until it came to a stop on the shoulder or in the ditch. As far as crashes go, between my male friends and myself we only have had 2 crashes and neither were out fault, and in both of those casss the other vehicle at fault had a woman driving.

Most female drivers fit into two categories. First, drivers who are very, very scared, drive extremely slowly and often have no real perception of the machine, and this is the majority - however, while annoying, they are often pretty safe.
