Nice! The road to self improvement starts with yourself. Don't let these words be meaningless platitudes.
Also, check out /r/TokyoSeddit if you haven't yet! It could always use new members :)

Allow me to take it back to a 4th grade counselor level. If you don't love yourself first, how can you expect anyone else to?
Well said, man. Not only does doing you first make logical sense, it also actually builds attraction. You win twice.
[–]PestySamurai 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There are women everywhere, and there is only one of me. I am the prize.
I love this man, what a fantastic read.
[–]sunchow 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You're realization of yourself as the "prize" is merely replacing them with yourself upon the pedestal. Now don't get me wrong here, everyone deserves self-esteem, it's just easier and far more appropriate to not over-bloat your ego and realize that everyone (regardless of gender) has something to offer. Whether it is worth your time is something that only you can decide and no one else needs to hear about it. Also, when you realize everyone is beautiful (which we all are), then you won't even revere women differently than men, and your pursuit will turn into basic, fundamental human relationships (which are integral to genuine happiness). Sexual relations are something that may come after the attaining of this basic relationship with anyone mutually suitable, but it is nothing that should even be considered beforehand. It's simple to just change your attitude (science bless cognition!), but it is always the approach that needs to change if unparalleled results are expected. In my opinion, the mentality you've implored in these self-righteous sentiments is always worse than revering others in the same light. Best of luck to you and all who read this, for what it's worth.

Amazing post man. Great writing as well
[–]DillsYo 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thank you dude. I know im late to this but wow did i need to hear that. I just graduated high school and so now is the time to envision who i want to be. In order to eventually become that person i will think before all my actions. I will check to see if I am doing something to reach my end goal. Instead of putting it off, doing drugs and wasting time i will improve my life everyday. i'm going to stop with the wasted time and turn it into playing the drums, reading a good book, hanging out with the girl i've been crushing on. I will still have fun but i won't let fun rule my life like it does now. thank you and have a great life. i will try my hardest to do the same.

I woke up falling back into my old habits and insecurities, feeling failed from the weekend. I forgot the new me. The new me where, I am accomplishing so much, I am constantly growing at an exponential rate, and where people who decide to turn away from interacting are loosing out.
Thanks for reminding, I needed this. Its grind time.

A few of you are misinterpreting his message. To some, it comes off as arrogant and narcissistic, but becoming the prize means you are setting standards for yourself that you won't bend for others in terms of compromising your own values. This is where that cliché and stupid phrase "be yourself" actually comes into good use.
The whole journey of self-improvement is about improving yourself and helping out others around you (if you bring up others, you'll make friends in the process, and you'll become more of the image for a true value giver) is what it all boils down to.
Great article, OP. The rhetorical question now is, you're all motivated, so how many of you are going to go out?
I was reading an article and it was talking about "Epiphany addiction." It means reading articles like this and getting amped up thinking we can improve just from reading without actually applying all this knowledge. I'll admit I'm guilty of this. I'm completely enriched by all the knowledge from these self-posts and articles of self-improvement, but I feel I'm not going out enough out of my comfort zone to apply.
Good luck and have fun, my friends.

I think Tywin Lanaster was referring to someone who is going around proclaiming their greatness simply in words. This post is more of a self reflection and is to be followed up by action. The important part is not that he's saying that he is the prize, but that he realizes his potential as an individual and strives to be the best that he can.

You sound narcissistic.
[–]ojeffnumber1fan -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Very much so. The whole "I do not need to stumble and grope after women, perpetually stung by the cold winds of their indifference, or at best barely comforted in the meager glow of a lukewarm romance. There are women everywhere, and there is only one of me. I am the prize."
Women could say the same thing about him. All a matter of perspective.

You're unbearably arrogant. go fuck yourself.

This post would read 10x better if it wasn't so repetitive. Hammering the point "I am the prize." sounds clunky and has a cult vibe. Thanks for everything else tho.

Very rarely do I read something on the internet that gives me the urge to print out, post on my wall, and read every day. This did that. It's pure, pure awesome.
Nicely done.

I'm planning on going to China next summer to teach English! I will keep these fantastic words to heart until then, and hopefully have as much success as you have! This was a great post!
I love this because this how I feel right now. Since I lost my gf of 5 months I've dedicated myself to my band, to working hard at my job, to working hard at the gym, and improving myself overall. Working to be content with myself.

See, this is kinda the opposite, that I was losing girls because after a few years of girls falling into my lap, I started getting confident and taking myself for granted. And the supply dried up.
I was born with Asperger's syndrome, so I was well aware that my emotion blindness was scaring my desired friends off. After a lifetime of trying to counteract that fact by becoming perfect boyfriend material in everything else, I am now muscular, 6'2", a learned feminist, very sexually facile and glib, have an earned IQ of 152 and a regular freelance income, plays acoustic guitar, and gives one motherfucker of a back massage. So I almost always make it to the second date before he/she starts getting creeped out and goes all "Why are you still talking? Why aren't your eyes moving right? Is there something wrong?" and the relationship collapses from there. Break the stereotype here: almost all the aspies I've ever met who are capable of seeing how much you people enjoy your emotions and relationships? Most of us who comprehend it seethe with despairing envy that it comes to you without thinking. It's been an uphill battle for me all these years to build a set of emotions even at a crude level. Human is a REALLY, REALLY HARD second language, if that helps your understanding. Took me a lifetime to learn, even with total immersion in a culture full of it, and I'm still really far from complete fluency.
I didn't actually start getting girls and guys (yeah, bi) again until I stopped behaving like the cavalier dickbag I'm sure I was being and started actually trying to do all that 'action' stuff you guys did. And because of the aforementioned Aspergian emotional blindness, I was really, really bad at figuring out that I was turning them off by trying to be out of their league. It's not arrogance out of superiority, it's arrogance out of blindness, because you can't see the way the other person's affected by anything.
So you're like my opposite here, in that I had to learn humility and how to relax to get tail again. (Not as opposed to confidence, but as opposed to arrogance of blindness.) Once I made "being nice" the cherry on top of the sundae instead of the ice cream, it fell into place. And I like myself a bit more now. :)

I like this, two of my most popular affirmations may help others
I am determinted. My determination is 100ft tall. Nothing triumphs my determination.
No one person on this earth can change their past but ever single person can start today to change their future. Today is the day that change comes. Today is my day. I am the future.
