I read the charter section they referred to and it seems that is it legal for them to do it. Essentially section 1 says that no one can be discriminated against, except for situations outlined in section 2.

Section 1: Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.

Section 2: Subsection (1) does not preclude any law, program or activity that has as its object the amelioration of conditions of disadvantaged individuals or groups including those that are disadvantaged because of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.

Because this is a "womens' center" it falls under the exception shown in section 2. So while I personally don't think anyone should be turned away from any job that they are qualified for, it isn't illegal, and I can sort of see their reasoning; it generally doesn't make a situation any better when you have a victim or say rape or domestic violence being put with someone that could trigger memories of the violation, whether the victim is male or female.

The issue this bring up in my mind isn't so much that I'm angry that a womens' center has the ability to do this, it's that while you see womens' centers everywhere, that really do a lot of good for female victims, you will almost never see a mens' center. This isn't because of discrimination in the law, it's because society has this idea that men can't be victims or be disadvantaged because of their gender. It is an idea that is centuries old and I just think this mentality that men can't be victims really really REALLY needs to change.

Dude, I hate to break it to you, but my friend works at a women's shelter. The individuals she interacts with cannot, and will not trust a man because of prior cases in their lives. My advise is to stop worrying and stressing about it because its for a legitimate reason, and not something frivolous like a waitressing job where they need cleavage to sell.

I don't know how law gets interpreted in Canada, but the U.S. has laws like that against discrimination, and often they are only enforced when the violation is against members of protected groups - women, ethnic minorities, anyone but straight white men. It's wrong, but it's how things get done.

The posting doesn't just say only women wanted; the description is that they're looking for an individual oriented toward feminism, to draw on that orientation in her outreach efforts toward other women and help them learn how they are (allegedly) still being oppressed, and what to do about it. Who do you think are the alleged oppressors?

Whether the posting is right or wrong, legal or illegal, just for a moment imagine the work environment you'd be subjected to at a place like that. If hired, you'd be expected to be a feminist - as a man, a self-hating gender apologist. How could you work in that environment and do that job, and be made sick by it?

Gender may be a bona-fide occupational requirement in this instance. As another example, it's okay to exclude you for a waitress position in a topless bar.

It sucks, but I'm against non-discrimination law. I believe that so long as a private business is not recieving government money, they should be allowed to discriminate.

On a moral level that's wrong. But on a legal one, I support their right to be wrong.

A lot of people on this sub are libertarians or Republicans, so I thiqnk some of y'all will agree with me here.

I think it’s OK for a job to exclude men and women from applying (and obviously some women do too, as evidenced by this job listing).

The problem comes in when people cry bloody murder when they are “discriminated against” in a certain field. Firefighters come to mind. In California, it’s extremely easy for women to get hired as firefighters due to equal opportunity laws, but men are subject to insane waiting lists. I’m not saying that women shouldn’t be firefighters, but I would personally feel safer if I had some large, physically powerful person saving my ass, rather than someone who simply got the job based on their gender.

It sucks that you’re out of work. When I was unemployed I felt like utter shit, so I feel your pain. But the truth is, the more gender “equality” laws that there are on the books, the worse off you will be.
