Women's trouble finding husbands is only part of the problem: Men who aren't interested in marriage also have less incentive to be productive workers or responsible fathers. This is a serious problem with worrying economic and social implications. No amount of feminist happy talk about "choice" or Bennett-like bluster about "manning up" is going to solve it.

here's a thought experiment: when an unmarried female gets pregnant, either parent can opt for abortion and the female is obliged to undergo one or waive all rights to the male's income. Sorta changes the complexion of that particular option somewhat.

Girls aren't scared - because they have a choice here.
Boys are scared - because they have no power at all.

She can abort or put up for adoption, he simply has to go along with her choice.

Given that nature imposes the physical burden of pregnancy on the female of the species, that sounds counterintuitive.

Didn't supreme courts like the one in Ireland rule that only boys can be sex offenders when both parties are underage because girls bear the burden of pregnancy? I'm pretty sure law trumps nature in this case.

Just ask young women about men today. You will find them talking about prolonged adolescence and men who refuse to grow up. I've heard too many young women asking, "Where are the decent single men?"

I would think this has more to do with women's view of "the right guy" being skewed. Okcupid did a study where women rated 80% of men below average.

Back in the 1990's I decided I would not have sex with someone I could not explicitly trust.

I did not have sex until I was married. And even now, the only thing keeping me in the relationship is that I would be absolutely owned in court.

Bottomline: Because of the internet, and placed like /r/MensRights, the facts about marriage/divorce are available and shared more. Today's 20- and 30-somethings, people about to be married, learn more about how life works from other people's stories on the internet, not mainstream media news pieces.

Though a guy is legally innocent, a judge automatically orders that he lose his children to "visitation"; lose eighteen years (some states 21 years) of his income; and lose most of stuff while being "awarded" most of the marital debt, in a divorce he may not want (unilateral), for little or no reason (no-fault).

A guy would have to be a fool to agree to these terms. Especially in a country with one of the highest divorce rates in the world.

In college with "rape culture" and anti-male policies, it is wise not to have sex.

To add insult to injury in divorce court, the woman may earn more than the guy yet receive the same favor. By buddy's wife was a pediatrician making more than him, but the divorce judge ignored this fact, and buried my friend financially anyway.

No less powerful? It's more powerful. Your hormone levels are going down and you can think more clearly about sexual matters, so it actually starts to look even worse. Also, you have a better sense of the future and what "screwed for life" really means, it's not so abstract once you're in your twenties and thirties. That said, i would like to congratulate teenage boys for being so sensible about this -- so much for "Boys are stupid"

Maybe it isn't so much that women make boys afraid of having sex, maybe it's all the horror stories they teach in sex ed. I'm really sick of hearing in health class that if you have sex, even with contraceptives, you could easily get pregnant and catch HIV. They don't give you odds or numbers, they just make it seem like if you have sex before you're married, you're gonna get knocked up and killed. I'm all for teaching the facts, but I'm sick of everyone making sex a bad thing

Schalet's most interesting assertion is that "the American boys I interviewed seemed more nervous about the consequences of sex than American girls."

Obviously they're more worried about the consequences, they lack reproductive choice and are subject to gang rape in debtors prison for the crime of losing their job.
