I think the punishment fits the crime. I hate to blindly scream discrimination without facts like the feminists do. Does anyone have any evidence of this court (I mean this exact same court not one in another county or state) treating men differently?

Just so we're all clear:

(a) Statutory rape is sexual penetration of a victim by the defendant or of the defendant by the victim when the victim is at least thirteen (13) but less than eighteen (18) years of age and the defendant is at least four (4) years older than the victim.

That's the law in TN. The charges have nothing to do with her status as a teacher's aid or any connection to her working at the school.

Not to make light of the article, but please don't sensationalize titles, it serves no purpose other than to give ammunition to those who fight against the Mens Rights Community. The woman was a teacher's aid in an elementary school, not a teacher, and likely never had contact with the victim in an official capacity (for a number of years at least).

Did she receive a lighter sentence than a man in the same position would? Probably, but then again a man would never be hired as an elementary school teacher's aid.

Sorry but at 16, either gender, you are either capable of deciding who touches you and who doesn't, or you should be locked in a cage. This statutory rape bullshit should be saved for children, not teens.

Perhaps the lesson here is that while it is wrong, the punishment for having sex with a teenager who agrees and who has natural sexual desires should be a world apart from someone who rapes a child. And perhaps the sex offenders list is needed for the latter, not the former?

At least, should we not question the idea that 'all sex with minors is equally wrong, be they 16 or 6'?
