Rosemary Kennedy who was his sister was treated like trash because having disability was inconvenient.

https://allthatsinteresting.com/rosemary-kennedy-lobotomy

The Forgotten Story Of Rosemary Kennedy, Who Was Lobotomized So That JFK Could Succeed

Though John F. Kennedy and Jackie might be the most recognizable members of the family, the Kennedys were famous long before John became president.

Their father, Joe Kennedy Sr., was a prominent businessman in Boston and his wife, Rose, was a noted philanthropist and socialite. Together they had nine children, three of whom went into politics. For the most part they lived their lives in the open, almost like America’s version of a royal family.

But, like every family, they had their secrets.

Born in 1918, Rosemary Kennedy was the third child of Joe and Rose and the first girl. During her birth, the obstetrician who was supposed to be delivering her was running late. Not wanting to deliver the baby without a doctor present, the nurse reached up into Rose’s birth canal and held the baby in place.

The actions of the nurse would have lasting consequences for Rosemary Kennedy. The lack of oxygen delivered to her brain during her birth caused lasting damage to her brain, resulting in a mental deficiency.

Though she looked like the rest of the Kennedys, with bright eyes and dark hair, her parents knew she was different right away.

As a child, Rosemary was unable to keep up with her siblings, who would often play ball in the yard, or run around the neighborhood. Her lack of inclusion often caused “fits,” which were later discovered to be seizures or episodes relating to her mental illness.

However, in the 1920s mental illness was highly stigmatized. Fearing repercussions if her daughter couldn’t keep up, Rose pulled Rosemary out of school and instead hired a tutor to teach the girl from home. Eventually, she sent her to a boarding school, in lieu of institutionalizing her.

In 1928, Joe was named an ambassador to the Court of St. James in England. The entire family moved across the Atlantic and was presented at court to the public. Despite her disabilities, Rosemary joined the family for the presentation.

Of course, no one knew the extent of her disability, as the Kennedys had worked hard to keep it quiet.

In England, Rosemary gained a sense of normalcy, as she had been placed in a Catholic school run by nuns. With the time and patience to teach her, they were training her to be a teacher’s aide and she was flourishing under their guidance.

However, in 1940, when Germany marched on Paris, the Kennedys were forced back to the states, and Rosemary’s education was abandoned. Once back stateside, Rose placed Rosemary in a convent, though it didn’t last long. According to the nuns, Rosemary would sneak out at night and go to bars, meet strange men and go home with them.

At the same time, Joe was grooming his two oldest boys for a career in politics. Rose and Joe worried that Rosemary’s behavior could create a bad reputation not just for herself but for the whole family, and eagerly searched for something that would help her.Dr. Walter Freeman was the answer.Freeman, along with his associate Dr. James Watts had been researching a neurological procedure that was said to cure the physically and mentally disabled. The procedure? The lobotomy.

When it was first introduced, the lobotomy was hailed as a cure-all and was widely recommended by physicians. Despite the excitement, however, there were many warnings that the lobotomy, though occasionally effective, was also destructive. One woman described her daughter, a recipient, as being the same person on the outside, but like a new human on the inside.

Despite the warnings, Joe needed no convincing, as it seemed like this was the Kennedy family’s last hope. Years later, Rose would claim that she had no knowledge of the procedure until it had already happened. No one thought to ask if Rosemary had any thoughts of her own.

In 1941, when she was 23 years old, Rosemary Kennedy received a lobotomy. Two holes were drilled in her skull, through which small metal spatulas were inserted. The spatulas were used to sever the link between the pre-frontal cortex and the rest of the brain. Though it is not known whether he did so on Rosemary, Dr. Freeman would often insert an icepick through the patient’s eye to sever the link as well as the spatula.

Throughout the entire procedure, Rosemary was awake, speaking with doctors and reciting poems to nurses. They knew the procedure was over when she stopped speaking.

Immediately after the procedure, the Kennedys realized that something was wrong.

Rosemary could no longer speak or walk. She was moved to an institution and spent months in physical therapy before she regained movement, and even then it was only partially in one arm.

Rosemary Kennedy spent 20 years in the institution, unable to speak, walk, or see her family. It wasn’t until after Joe suffered a massive stroke that Rose went to go see her daughter again. In a panicked rage, Rosemary attacked her mother, unable to express herself any other way.

I just read this whole story in Bill Bryson's book The Body. In that he says the doctor who did this surgery, Walter Freeman went all around the country lobotomizing people willy nilly - once doing 225 surgeries in 12 days. He would perform them often without gloves or surgical masks, on children as young as 4 years old, people with phobias, drunks picked up off the street or people convicted of homosexual acts i.e. any "abberant" behavior. The procedure was so brutal that an experienced neurologist fainted while watching a Freeman operation. The worst part - Freeman was a psychiatrist with no surgical certification.

[–]slayeroftruthFDS Apprentice 26 points27 points28 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well that's a real life horror story. Those poor people. Its weird man who was not certified was allowed to do lobotomies on people. As proof with Rosemary or any other poor soul who he got his power tripping hands on that would end disastrous.

It really shows how even "liberal" parents can easily value sons over daughters. They were willing to do anything to cover up for their sons who slept around, and worse. They were wealthy, they could have sent her overseas to party and live off a trust fund under a new name, Lord only knows how many sons of wealthy men do that.

Yes... If she needed help because of her disability they could have hired someone to help her if she needed it.

I’m sure she knew what happened inside although her body didn’t work anymore. How awful. Medical mainstream ideas should always be questioned. Back then it was “science”

I agree. It would be very sad way to live. Women should not just accept everything. Were not taken serious for our pain and men side effects ect are considered the norm.

This article discusses JFK’s long history of infidelity, reporting that he cheated sexually on his wife Jackie Kennedy countless times with a long list of women, including Marilyn Monroe, his 19-year-old White House intern Mimi Alford, his 2 secretaries Priscilla Wear and Jill Cowan (nicknamed “Fiddle and Faddle” by the Secret Service), Jackie Kennedy’s press secretary Pamela Turnure, and Jackie Kennedy’s own sister Lee. JFK also used his special assistant Dave Powers to procure and hunt down new young women at destinations and events that JFK would be attending.

It’s interesting because JFK is heralded by liberals as a hero, but his shifty womanizing/cheating sex predator history is often completely brushed under the rug.

If these cheating events happened today, JFK would likely be torched by the media and treated as a #MeToo villain. It is unclear why Jackie Kennedy never divorced him, even when JFK allegedly tried to commit her to a mental institution for calling out his cheating. I am under the impression that she may have felt that she was held hostage by the political name/branding of the marriage.

Because his father gave her $1 million, quite a lot in the 60s, just to stay through his presidency. Then you know what happened.

Anarcho-socialist political analyst Noam Chomsky thinks JFK was "just some guy"-- not very interesting as a person and equivalently guilty of hegemonic war crimes as other US presidents. https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/dismantle-all-of-this-stuff-a-conversation-with-noam-chomsky/

That is some misogynistic bullshit. The idea that we're somehow living in a post-sexual-predator society because a handful of scumbags were outted is consistently used to dismiss and diminish the fight against the culture of sexual violence against women that we live in.

[–]CakeSprinklesUnicornThrowaway Account[S] 31 points32 points33 points 4 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

I agree with you that we are not living in a post-sexual-predator society. However, for this specific case, given that JFK was president and a high status figure, it’s likely that in today’s social media paparazzi era, he would have had a much harder time getting away with all the nights of infidelity without the paparazzi hounding him at every corner. In addition, his secretaries in today’s time would have had recourse to name him publicly in a sexual harassment lawsuit. The number of women named here (30+) meant that today’s press would have had cause to demonize him as much (if not more) than Clinton, Trump, and Cuomo.

My point being that this isn’t supposed to diminish the ongoing fight against sexual violence for women; rather, it’s to point out that today’s media environment is much different than the media environment in the 50/60s, and high-profile male sexual predators will find themselves outed now as targets of the media. The media environment in the 50s/60 had brushed these incidents to the side, so at least some feminist progress has been made specifically in the media environment for calling male sexual predators out and not letting them get away with heinous acts.

I'm 50/50 on this. On one hand, yes I think it'd get more media attention and discussion (although I'm not sure how much of any was brought to light during the time either) but also we saw during Trump's presidency how the Stormy Daniels situation got attention and yet didn't really gain traction. Not to get into a political discussion or anything, but we've seen plenty of other public figures get dragged for infidelity, but while an attempt was made in this case it just didn't have the same narrative. The focus was more on whether or not she was paid off to keep quiet, meanwhile no one bat an eye about the affair itself. I don't even recall an apology or acknowledgement to his wife concerning it.

I'm led to believe that with enough support for a certain political figure, the corresponding party will more than gladly brush things like this under the rug no matter the era.

Edit: also going to add that when it comes to JFK, it's apparently a conspiracy theory that he's still alive and has the support of certain conservatives. So ya, not much has changed.

No, high-power men suffer almost no consequences for rape. Look at Trump. Look at Brett Kavanaugh, beer-drinking rapist and now supreme court justice for life.

The media is very different now true … but look at what Donald Trump managed to get away with and still remain president.

Also she belonged to the group of women groomed to be the wife of someone rich and successful. They lived for money and status. Without those they felt worthless. Look who she married after. Another horrible man. She could have had anyone. She could have stayed single. Raising her kids as a widow and nobody would have said a word. She would have been independent and respected. Instead… Ultimately she was a byproduct of her social circle.

Edited to add: He was groomed also to be who he became. His whole family was behind him. They wouldn’t let a “silly” woman or some little indiscretions- like sleeping with whom ever that had a pulse- ruin their reputation and dreams of being in top. We don’t know what went on behind closed doors. And he was ugly in my opinion. When they call him handsome I am ?!????!???what?!??????

[–]ParkHallLondon 56 points57 points58 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's important to recognize that Jackie was traumatized after her husband was shot dead and died in her arms. When LBJ was sworn in as President on Airforce One, Jackie was still covered in her husband's blood.

She understandably became very concerned about personal safety and apparently chose Onassis as he would enable her and her children to be protected and hidden away from the media and assassination attempts. She was an extremely cultured and intelligent woman and noone should make her out to be a passive woman who didn't make very calculated choices about her own life.

[–]detikripurFDS Newbie 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I completely agree with you about the fact that she was traumatized. Who wouldn’t? Also I know she was a cultured woman and for sure she made calculations before marrying Onasis. She already knew him. That’s why I am saying she married him in “cold blood” and with her eyes wide open. She was a “nobody” in terms of political power so don’t think she was at any risk and of being murdered. She wanted the wealth and peace if mind for herself and her children and he could give her that.

I loathe JFK the way I loathe a slug in my house and I loathe his golden reputation even more. He was nothing but an overgrown rich boy with a bad back, poor sexual self control and a tendency toward cruelty and callousness and predatory opportunism with women. Solve the Cuban missile crisis? It likely wouldn't have escalated to the point it did if he hadn't been on his chauvinistic bullshit, the whole thing was avoidable. Civil rights? Not on board until he was politically forced to be. I'm far from being a conservative make no mistake... man's just a disgrace, and people that still simp for him need to get some perspective.

[–]BasieSkanksRuthless Strategist 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

JFK was an absolute slag, but Jackie did not marry him because she loved him. She married him for his money and social status. Whilst she put up with a lot of JFK's rubbish, she was not a passive housewife. She was extremely calculating in terms of her relationships and she ended up marrying into a family with significant social standing and wealth (at the time). After Ari Onassis' death, she managed to secure herself a hefty payout from his estate. She ended up living an extremely comfortable life whilst pursuing one of her passions part-time which was editing. The Kennedys are the real losers in all this.

I have a friend who, years ago, made this big long Facebook post about how Jackie is her idol, the epitome of strong womanhood, etc. I was like... Uhhhh... She's the biggest pickme IN THE WORLD. How embarrassing to live with the knowledge that everyone sees you kowtowing to such a philandering pig. It didn't go over well.🤷

Edit: I agree that it was a very different time back then and she had fewer accepted options. But she was from a wealthy family and had money of her own. Real strength would've been to leave and send the message that women do not have to put up with shoddy treatment. If she were alive and in the same situation today, I like to think that's exactly what she'd do.

[–]Emergency-Feed8216FDS Apprentice 89 points90 points91 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I feel sorry for Jackie too because she was such a victim and there was little to no recourse for women to combat ab.use in that era. But it's true she's the eternal Pickme patron saint.

Jackie was the icon of my MIL. My husband pointed out that Jackie Kennedy was trained from birth to be a geisha for old pervs, starting with her father who would incestuously confide his adulterous sexual exploits to his young daughter.

My MIL wouldn't hear of it and told her Pickme friends and anyone who would listen that her son's feminist wife was corrupting his mind lol.

We're now NC with MIL It was like an exorcism.

Honestly, I feel bad for Jackie Kennedy, who I think was partially a victim of her era. There was no FDS back then, and the 60s had just barely started. I think she knew that she was something of a hostage in the marriage, but was afraid to leave due to the fear of 50/60s era societal repercussions. If she was alive today and this happened, I think she would have had way more courage to leave.

[–]GCFDSthrowawayFDS Newbie 45 points46 points47 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree completely. There was little to no recourse back then, and she did carry herself with grace. I just hate that so many hold her up to a standard of strength when comparing that era to this one is apples and oranges.

So many women worship Marilyn-no wonder we have a generation of pickme's. Her roles in films are at best cringe dumb blonde sex bot roles. Then she wondered why people didn't respect her. Apparently she was "besotted" with JFK after he played with her for a weekend.
She reportedly wrote to Jackie telling her that she intended to become First Lady.

Fine, Jackie replied: 'Marry him. I'll move out and you'll have all the problems.'

Jackie is the goat.
