Scruffy aged man (Simon Baker) has a meeting with an "OLD-er" woman. I don't always scroll through the daily mail but when I do, it's posts like these that make me snort. Media is ready to devalue women and put scruffy men on pedestals. The comments call them out.

It's always talk about "two consenting adults" until those two adults are consenting to something that doesn't dehumanizing the woman. 🙄

I think that what has them so upset is that it is mutual and that there is expressly mentioned "no p*rn".

I have seen many articles where the men were visibly controlling and didn't like their partner to have male friends or text male friends or even to think they had male friends. and no one seemed to have a problem with that. I wish my male friends could be real friends but they are just waiting in line to have sex with me on the first occasion. enough dirty propositions and suggestive texts, enough shoulder touching... they don't even want a relationship because they know I am single, they want a piece too. what am I? the fucking red cross, handing out aid?

men view friendship with women very differently. all the men I thought I was friends with pushed the line and tried disrespecting my boundaries or ghosted me because "I wouldn't put out". there's immense disrespect in being thrown in the sex-zone with no warning.

I’ve been married for 20 years and we have always followed these “rules”, except we know it as mutual respect and love. Ain’t no big thing.

The California-based Christian revealed her rules are: “No friends with the opposite sex,” “No being alone with the opposite sex” and “No texting the opposite sex without the other knowing.

I do not see this as a 'Christian-only" or "religious-people-only" thing. I see it as what people in a committed relationship do.

I consider the "No being alone with the opposite sex” as too much, within reason. but that's just me.

but there's nothing wrong with this:

Additional agreements include: “No lusting after others (following scandalous pages),” “No porn,” and “Always put each other first (even over parents).”

especially since these people are married and have an infant.

no woman wants to feel second only to her MIL or to see her husband watching porn while she breastfeeds and changes baby diapers or to hear his phone blows up with notifications IG and OF models. I definitely wouldn't.

[–]ello-mottoFDS Apprentice 245 points246 points247 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You know what's funny?

These rules apply to BOTH of them.

But all the outrage is based on "Oh the poor man! How will he handle it?! So much sacrifice. This woman has trust issues."

Okay and what about the sacrifice on the woman's end? She's adhering to the same rules. No porn, no lusting after others (half naked men etc), no male friends, no texting to men without her husband knowing.

It goes both ways. But once again, women's labor contributions are minimized, discounted and ignored.

It's all about catering to men's feefees and how dreadful he must feel living under these rules, with no one giving a shit about the woman and how much she's equally sacrificing too in order to keep a healthy, safe and strong relationship. 🙄

Is society subconsciously admitting that men are perverts every time they only feel sorry for the man & automatically blame the woman when a couple has a ‘no porn’ rule 🤔

"no Jane, you cannot meet my friend Julia because she is my friend only. Only I am allowed to be friends with her! it doesn't matter that she doesn't know I am married - to you. you wouldn't like her anyway! why do you insist on meeting my friend Julia!? I don't even want you to be alone with each other!"

sure... not sus at all. because if she dares to ask anything about Julia she will be labelled "insecure".

One of my good friends wouldn’t even let her husband come in my bedroom when they were over on a TOUR OF MY BRAND NEW HOUSE. He refused to step foot, and goes, “Oh, no, Wifename has a rule—I can’t go in other women’s bedrooms”

It was soooo uncomfortable to me. Like, I am not attracted to him AT ALL, she’s literally standing RIGHT THERE, we’re on a HOME TOUR… so cringe

[–]TherulerTFDS Newbie 68 points69 points70 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah the not entering a room with someone of the different sex rule is going to get insulting fast, especially to coworkers.

Someone needs to logically erase this "having healthy sexual and relationship boundaries" is some sort of backwards religiously indoctrinated Christian thing.

Shaming healthy sexual and relationship boundaries, by falsely linking it to be "anti-progressive" and "religious indoctrination" has done more harm than good in society.

It has put countless young girls and women on the factory line of LibFem and PickMeism, ready to be used and gaslighted by LVM.

I have a hangup about the 'rule' description. Maybe I'm overthinking it- or just have issues with authority.

Why do I want to make rules and enforcements for my partner when they all come down to the basic expectation of respect? Is it in a legal document so I can easily prove grounds for divorce? When these expectations are listed out in the form of rules it feels like having to micromanage the man. I think these should be expectations you lay out for the relationship during pre-marriage counseling/courses/engagement-any course you take to prepare you as a couple for marriage (once he's proven he shows you basic respect then you can say what you will not tolerate). But for it to come down to creating rules like it takes all the critical thinking out of respecting your partner, and leaves it as a list of rules- when they at most should be examples of violating the expectation to be respected in the partnership.

I'd only care about a list of rules if it was in a legal pre-nup or addendum to our marriage license- break them, you break the contract, and it's void sorta thing and it doesn't seem like this is a legal rule/contract but rather basic expectations that had rules created around them.

[–]tuberosetearsFDS Newbie 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

When these expectations are listed out in the form of rules it feels like having to micromanage the man.

This. It sounds exhausting, and it feels a bit infantilizing. If we're married I just want him to act like a loyal, respectful adult both in my presence and when we're apart without me feeling like I have to spell out basic married-person conduct for him.

[–]Unfit_NeedleworkerFDS Newbie 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They’re men. Obviously they need it laid out for them. That’s why the whole internet worries about the man. We know how most are... that’s why we’re here.

[–]letsberealforamomentRuthless Strategist 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Seems like the "internet" supports all the bizarre rules bdsm, polygamous and ENM couples impose on each other. Why is then so controversial?

Mmmmmm......

[–]Equal-Ear2312FDS Apprentice[S] 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

because it's mutual. can you imagine a man ditching porn and not looking at IG butt pics or subscribing to an OF ? they can't.

[–]hexriot2001FDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

to be fair, these rules wouldn't work for everyone. like if you or you partner are bisexual are you just not allowed to be around anyone?

[–]TherulerTFDS Newbie 61 points62 points63 points 4 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

I'll go against the grain here, while I agree that many of those things are fine, especially if you're apparently both in agreement, making them rules just reeks of lack of trust. I'm also noticing your title only includes some of the logical ones, I'd assume 95% of couples have an implicit "no sexting" or "secretly texting" rule without it needing to be spelled out. No porn and no workwives/boyfriends are also pretty logical.

But theirs are way crazier than just those.

"Not being alone with the opposite sex" shouldn't have to be a rule for people just to not have them cheat. It's also a rule that's going to be pretty limiting career wise and frankly a bit insulting to someone of the opposite sex they can't be in a room with. As in, that's something you'd go to HR over.

And "no friends of the opposite sex" is just pretty bonkers to me. How would that even work when you're friendly with other couples?

I mean to me it's a red flag if a dude only has dude friends, and can't trust himself to be alone in a room with a woman, to be honest.

[–]Equal-Ear2312FDS Apprentice[S] 35 points36 points37 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

of course, some of them ARE not feasible and are controlling, especially if they are expressed like this:

“No friends with the opposite sex,”

“No being alone with the opposite sex” and

“No texting the opposite sex without the other knowing.”

I would like to think that these are valid requests but only if they are followed by "without letting the other know" or "and keeping it a secret" or having a reasonable background.

“No secret friendships with the opposite sex/ friendships with the opposite sex that exclude your partner completely"
“No being alone with the opposite sex in secret or without telling your partner"
“No long term texting the opposite sex without the other knowing/ in secret"

1.no friends with the opposite sex without letting the other know (meaning not keeping "secret friendships")

2.no being alone with the opposite sex without the telling the other (aka no secret meeting behind the other's back) --I think in a healthy relationship you have an exchange and you let the other know what you intend to do: "I am meeting Jim tomorrow at 5 pm" etc. I think that the husband knows who Jim is and does not need an explanation. I would definitely be circumspect if my partner would keep a female friend a secret or would try to prevent me becoming friendly with her. that is a deal breaker. I do have my friends, sure, he has his friends, which is great but if we cannot function as a couple and integrate the friends in our partnership then we're not going to last.

  1. and lastly, the texting part - of course, I am not going to tell my partner every single exchange you had with my friend or colleague "Jim" but I could tell them about it. I think it is extreme to limit any interaction like this especially when it comes to work-type situations - that's nuts and I do tend to think something was lost in there.

I mean, why would you be exchanging friendly texts with the mailman for months behind your husband's back?

or why would a man actively choose to meet with his children's nanny outside the context of work? or what man takes the nanny to dinner without telling his wife? am I taking the mailman to dinner and having secret conversations with him and making sure I am alone with him?

how fucked up would it be to find out your partner has met with his friend that is a woman for the past 10 months, every day, after work? and never even considered to tell you or even mention her name to you, especially since he might complain that he is too busy to take you out to a nice dinner?

I think the rules are in there to make sure no dirty secrets accumulate. this doesn't demand complete control of the other and it's definitely not a marker of lack of trust, on the contrary!

“Tell me you don’t trust your partner without telling me you don’t trust your partner,” one follower reportedly wrote while others described McPherson as “insecure” and “insane.”

I'd say that is the difference between informed trust and blind trust. most people prefer blind trust only because it benefits them.

it's not insecurity to ask your partner what they are doing, especially if you are married. it's not insecurity to tell your partner not to stalk teenage girls on IG or not to start scrolling for porn GIFs just because he's bored. or to want to know who your partner texts in the middle of the night while sitting alone on the sofa.

it's a sign of trust to tell the other and to be able to ask. why wouldn't I want to know why the man I am with sits alone protectively crouched with his phone in his hands, typing furiously?

come on!

[–]TherulerTFDS Newbie 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

I would like to think that these are valid requests but only if they are followed by "without letting the other know" or "and keeping it a secret" or having a reasonable background.

Yes these are obvious nuances, the thing is if a partner can understand obvious nuances to keep everything above board there's no need for the rules; Because there's a boatload of obvious exceptions to the rule.

I'd have no need for these rules, and would find them pretty silly, because there's a simple blanket rule "respect the relationship" and the rest is nuance.

Your examples are all of people being obviously shady by keeping things secret. If you need a rule for your partner not to be shady that's the problem right there.

how fucked up would it be to find out your partner has met with his friend that is a woman for the past 10 months, every day, after work?

Yes that would be fucked. Everyone would agree that's fucked. It's in fact so obvious that there's no need to have a rule against it.

it's not insecurity to tell your partner not to stalk teenage girls on IG or not to start scrolling for porn GIFs just because he's bored

Eh, if you have to tell your partner that you're with the wrong person.

Or to want to know who your partner texts in the middle of the night while sitting alone on the sofa.

Again, nuance. There's a difference between "All texting must be reported" and finding it odd if your partner won't say who they're texting in the middle of the night. The 2nd is completely normal and I wouldn't stand for that either.

If I heard someone had these rules in their relationship I'd pity them because apparently they had to sit down and hammer out rules that most healthy couples don't even have to think about.

[–]Equal-Ear2312FDS Apprentice[S] 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

yes, good point! nuance!

sure, it sounds downright crazy but these are things that should be discussed and agreed with before the relationship advances into deeper commitment stages.

I work with a lot of men - I am the only woman in my dept and most of our clients and partners, at least their legal representatives are men (this is reality!). my work phone is full of men's contacts. I receive at least 5 calls from men per day. some of them flirt, some don't take me seriously, some are very shocked I am a woman. with some of them, I developed a routine and we exchange the ubiquitous "how are you? how are things at work lately?" can you imagine what it would be like if my husband would say: you have to take me with you when you meet ABC holding's reps?

but boundaries need to be drawn not after marriage but from the very beginning of dating. and men who understand what mutual respect in a relationship means are very few.

[–]TherulerTFDS Newbie 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

but boundaries need to be drawn not after marriage but from the very beginning of dating

Or you date and find out if you have the same views on boundaries and what constitutes respecting the relationship.

At that point calling them rules becomes so unnecessary. If you trust your partner enough to understand nuances then the rules are useless.

Would you say you had a "no cheating" rule in your relationship? Or that it's pretty much an assumption.

Or lets take something more innocent. Me and my partner like to eat dinner together, if either of us doesn't want to or eats somewhere else we obviously let the other know.

I'd never consider it a rule "We are not allowed to eat dinner without our partner" with all kinds of nuance and exceptions attached. No, I'm just in a relationship with someone who also likes to have dinner together so it usually works out.

[–]TikiTikiTata-chalalaFDS Newbie 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If I heard someone had these rules in their relationship I'd pity them because apparently they had to sit down and hammer out rules that most healthy couples don't even have to think about.

Yes, the only time I think this would be worth hammering out is in a lawyers office for a prenup or marriage addendum as specific grounds for divorce and how the assets will be split based on the timing of these offenses rather than the divorce being filed. Otherwise you're having to enforce the rules and THEN enforce a divorce- just bake them in so you can enforce them easily or they aren't worth making 'rules'
