This is so, so weird. She does sound like a christian reciting a prayer.

She calls for empathy repeatedly without ever applying the concept to the people she talks about or for a second considering she might have had a part in her failed love stories. There is something clearly wrong about her. Plus this weird, emotionless voice and facial expression.

I wonder if people like this grab onto an ideology that justifies their pre-existing self-centerd attitude, or if it causes it. Possibly a mix of both I suppose.

But is this just anecdotal, or is this a proper phenomenon?

She is wrong right out the gate. Empathy =! selflessness, it is the capacity to feel what others are feeling, that’s all. It has nothing to do with what people are willing to do for you, just because a person empathizes with your emotions doesn’t mean they should therefor be willing to sacrifice themselves for you. You know, it’s almost as if they have boundaries too.

i'm back with a longwinded hot-take

throughout my life i've been encouraged to seek protection from men by other men but i've not been empowered to cultivate my own boundaries.

this isn't the result of a negligent nurturance but of a social environment i recognize as flawed. Women either fit into a patriarchal mold of protection or they spend a lifetime navigating mens lack of accountability at their own expense.

To be a woman in an adult relationship with a man is to learn how to compromise boundaries or learn hot to metabolize rejection.

i've never needed someone to stay when they've decided to leave but i've always relied on a fundamental regard for my experience and rarely have i received it.

a persons behavior toward someone from whom they have nothing to gain indicates their capacity for empathy. in my experience, this has been pretty minimal in men and where men are not challenged to interrogate their destruction in others lives, they are unable to perpetuate it.

the common response to hearing about my relationships is that i've just dated assholes, but i've decided that this is reductive and can fuel further gaslighting. i'm sure i've known goodness in the men i've dated and in between us i'm sure there has been a sincere connection.

They're good to me as long as my needs serve their purpose but not in so far as empathy is required. my ability to make sense of these interactions isn't satisfied by minimizing all the men i've loved to pathologic narcissists.

i have to start reading from my notes because i need to speed this up.

my perspective is informed by a capacity to tolerate destructive behavior with a matched capacity to honor goodness. i give men more credit than benevolent oblivion or inherent evil, which leaves me to interrogate the systems that cut them off from the practice of empathy but personally and societally.

consider the emotional labor required of a woman to endure her male partners destruction and also offer its resolution. women to the work of healing ourselves and the work of of healing men who violate us. We compromise our need to preserve a partnership or we perform the labor that often benefits his next partner. women do not benefit from the absence of a mans accountability except to sometimes secure the companionship of someone whose threshold for empathy is unequal to hers.

unhealed traumas carried by women into our marriages and projected onto our children to perpetuate cycles. We compromise our boundaries to secure partnership because solitude in our culture is equated with failure. we raise girls with permeable boundaries and boys are conditioned to violate them. our spirits are broken to perpetuate the notion that without partnership we are incomplete. we either subscribe to the status quo for a lifetime or fumble with how to challenge it.

i wish the men with whom i've shared intimacy would have known how to value my experience beyond what it did or didn't accomplish for them. access to my conventional beauty, proffesional accomplishments and empathy reflects on them favorably.

My request for radical transparency

[necessary to make an informed choice regarding elected rather than coerced partnership], my exploration of half-truths, my insistence on integrity, do not reflect favorably on someone whose narrative seeks to be infallible. why are men incentivized by an infallible narrative before connected vulnerability?

the lesson isn't to play the game well enough to earn a mans protection or favor but to validate my own experience so that no one is able to exploit it for their purpose. peace is a gift whether accessed through solitude or shared experiences with those who do not seek to benefit from my reduction. for men this is inherently socialized and for women it is learned. we are all walking each other home and boundaries are there to protect against the collateral damage of anothers process.

I found the bit about "compromise boundaries or metabolize rejection" interesting.

So, it is a problem with men that she has to "metabolize the rejection" of someone who wants something she doesn't?

It kinda sounds like she thinks men need to learn to not hurt women by breaking up with them or allowing the women to break up with them.

Absolutely. How is feminism "radical" or "revolutionary"? When it's strictly enforced in every boardroom and office in the country? It's horseshit. Feminism doesn't challenge the status quo, Feminism is the status quo.

I just wish more people would realize this but the propaganda is too strong.

I dated the equivalent of this person and it was about as hellish as you'd imagine. Clearly using past hurt as a way to say "you can't fucking feel the things I feel, so therefore I am morally superior to you".

And that's why two and a half years of therapy hasn't worked much at all, because I was dumb enough to let her hurt feelings tell me who I was as a person.

You can just tell that's true in the robotic way they regurgitate the standard line, like its a pre-memorized mantra or something, like they're trying to convince themselves, which is always how religious people sounded to me while preaching. And like them, if you point out a flaw in their reasoning, feminists fall back on circular logic. Asking "How does one know the Bible is true" often gets met with "Because God wrote it, and we know God wrote it because the Bible says so". In the same way, asking feminists "How do you know women are oppressed" often gets met with "Women get oppressed because the patriarchy is real and patriarchy is real because women are oppressed".
