God bless Indiana. Alimony (spousal maintenance) is capped at 3 years and there are certain requirements that must be met to receive it in the first place.

Yes. The higher earner pays the lower earner both child support and spousal support. CS lasts until the last kid becomes an adult (age differs in each jurisdiction). SS duration is dependent on the length of the marriage, and your jurisdiction. In some states, SS is rehabilitative lasting only 3 years (Indiana). In some states, a 10+ year marriage means there is no specified end-date (CA). In some states, a 20+ year marriage means permanent SS (MA).

Depends on the US State you reside in. I know that in my state of residence, anything beyond 10-years entitles you to receive “permanent” alimony as long as the higher earning spouse can support it…

There was a movie about ex-housewives never re-marrying again and would rather just date younger guys. They receive alimony while banging their boy-toys.

A divorce is never easy and your kids are the ones that suffer most. However, there are situations where the marriage just doesn’t work anymore. For example, a spouse can emotionally abandon the other partner.

It’s not easy to start over once you hit 40 or beyond. Younger women won’t date you, unless you’re Brad Pitt. Older women either have emotional baggage or children to support.

It really depends on the state you are going to get divorced in.

Some states like CA / WA / OR / MA -- have alimony calculators.

Other states, like AZ and TX, leave it 100% up to the discretion of the presiding judge. Also, those states tend to view alimony as "Well, do you need alimony to survive?" versus "you're entitled to it because you were married."

As stated state dependent. But generally speaking spousal support is based on: your need, her ability to pay, length of marriage. Your lifestyle is no longer directly the issue.

The next issue is the length and amount of support. For example, I'm in WA state and the general rule is short term marriages (<5 yrs) a few months or zero. Mid term marriages (5-25 yrs) 1 year of support for every 3-4 years of marriage. Long term (>25yrs) case by case but often aims to balance the money 50/50 and can be for life.

But it really varies. Understand that (in theory) child support is for the child, and calculated totally separate for alimony or division of assets/debts. And the big factors for CS are custody, residency and visitation. In most states you can NOT negotiate child support (because again it's for the child) BUT you can negotiate spousal support. And sometimes to balance things out spousal support gets increased/decreased to make things balance out.

Eg your wife owes you support, but you are willing to drop it for 50/50 custody and residency.

Research how things work in your state because there's a LOT of variation. CA with a marriage of more than 10yrs alimony for life is possible (but not a given).

You're a man, you don't ask for alimony or child support. You just want to make sure you don't have to pay any.

You need a kick in the butt, to widen your horizons and be a better earner if you can. Otherwise, just do your best to be a good father to your kids.

That's my take on it.
