Social programs based on need are a good thing and this is obviously a need that is unique to women. Same as pregnancy and childbirth related health care.

I'm good with this one.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Adding my voice to the ‘this is fine by me’ chorus. ‘Social programmes based on need’ are indeed a good thing generally, and yes women have some unique physical needs.

There may be areas in which mens’ healthcare is somewhat deficient, but let’s advocate for those becoming better, not everything becoming a bit worse.

[–]UnconventionalXY 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

So where is the program to identify men's needs and to facilitate them where possible with free outcomes? Managing the result of mens ejaculation, ED, prostatitis, incontinence, etc for free perhaps.

All we have are womens needs being identified and accommodated for free.

To be clear, the "need" is perceived to be not for feminine hygiene products, which are readily available, but for them to be free for every woman, whether she needs them to be free or not. From such a perspective, being free is not the need, but being available to women who can't afford them is. Either way is actually fine with me as long as society also supports mens "needs" in exactly the same way.

Better still is to enshrine into law free dignity products for all, regardless of gender, to ensure everyone is covered for dignity related issues, whether they be for incontinence, menstruation or whatever, to whatever gender a person may identify with.

What is being done in this instance is to focus on a single gendered aspect of dignity and ignore all the rest.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points23 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Same. This seems like a very stupid hill to die on. If my medical coverage covers prostate exams (and it should) why wouldn't we cover another biological issue?

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

There is no evidence anyone is dying on this hill. I didn't realize how emotional people on this sub are. Similar to feminists, interesting

[–]NeoVidia 15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thats really the cat calling the kettle black there m8. People here have been very rational by taking things like this on a case by case basis instead of just following their hate and trying to deny woman in every corner. You’re the one who’s emotional here and projecting and I hope you take a step back and work on yourself instead.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. It's the same as food banks, they give men's hygiene products as well. In no way poor girls and women not bleeding their pants is a bad thing. Progress for one gender doesnt mean its detrimental for the other.

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (28 children) | Copy Link

Why are needs unique to women addressed by legislation but men's are ignored? That's the part that's upsetting and leads me to label such legislation as "special privileges"

[–]Logical-Chaos-154 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

What needs would you like covered? Shaving is optional, many countries have programs to help with food issues, and people are fighting for larger seats already.

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (23 children) | Copy Link

I like how you've already made my need "optional". Nice. I didn't realize I could choose to not grow my facial hair haha

[–]Logical-Chaos-154 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Never seen guys grow out a beard?

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago* [recovered] (13 children) | Copy Link

Can't women just use paper towels?

[–]biff64gc 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not really, no. Paper towels don't isolate the blood away from the body so the towel will stick to the body and cause irritation/rash and the paper towel itself is rather abrasive and would be rubbing up against a very sensitive area and cause it's own issues.

We both have a choice on things like shaving, deodorants, and cutting hair. Women don't really have a choice on bleeding and it needs to be dealt with in a sanitary way.

There's a place to make an argument for biased legislation like with domestic violence and sexual harassment. This is healthcare related to a female exclusive issue. Bias doesn't really apply here.

[–]stacyxxluv 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I’m a woman, and I can tell you that nope paper towels is not gonna work. It might work on day 5/6. But the days before the flow is just heavier and you will leak on furniture etc it you use just that. I don’t think that’s in anybody’s interest. It’s also just very shameful especially if you are young. It’s already such a taboo and to have that happen is just so embarrassing.

[–]Ferbuggity 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nother woman here.. ^ What the woman above said.

Women in my family have particularly heavy flow, we gotta use those grandma pads overnight and on heaviest days. I used to take day 3 off work every month, for the pain and bleeding, and make up the hours later, most bosses were ok with that thank god. One wasn't, and first I leaked blood all over a chair and then vomited, and fainted in the breakroom waiting for my partner to bring me home. I got day 3 off after that.

No idiot's gonna tell me free tampons and pads for the poor is a bad idea.

[–]bigdtbone 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Dude, just stop. You are digging yourself deeper. Just stop.

[–]Any_Drama3272 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

No, I used paper towels when I was homeless— you wouldn’t believe how hard it is to find a job or apply for a place to live while you smell like you just murdered someone. It’s because of pads and tampons that the scent isn’t that bad, but using toilet paper or paper towels, yeah it’s super strong, dude.

[–]Ferbuggity 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Gods.. I am so sorry you had to go through that.

[–]Any_Drama3272 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Eh, if happens and I made it out, but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.

Thank you for your empathy, though. It means a lot to me.

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Oh man, that sounds rough. Sounds like you're doing better now?

[–]Any_Drama3272 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah dude I’m kicking ass now. I was going through some medical issues and when I was able to finally get healthcare access (which was really a godsend) I was able to get on medicine to pull my entire life together. I’m now in a really good paying job, and finishing up my 4th degree. Completely different circumstances these days.

Not to make it about politics but I totally understand it when it comes to the homeless. They have so much shit stacked against them— I was very very fortunate.

Thank you for asking (:

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't think that's political at all, and imo it's sad that empathy for the homeless is one of those things that's considered political these days.

But yeah, congrats, that's absolutely incredible.

[–]Logical-Chaos-154 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You have no idea how female biology works, do you? Or liquids? Or science in general?

[–]bigdtbone 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

You can choose not to shave it and not die of infection. Women’s sanitary products are literally healthcare. Your mustache is cosmetic.

Dude, you can’t actually be this dense.

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link

Wow I didn't realize Scottish women dying of infections from lack of sanitary products to be such a huge problem. And apparently I'm the dense one

[–]Any_Drama3272 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes actually, lack of tampons and napkins can actually lead to a urinary tract infection which then can spread to a bladder or kidney infection and you can literally die from it.

[–]bigdtbone 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I thought you said you were going to shut up until I permitted you to speak?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Ok, so you want women to get an infection cuz you think that they don't deserve free sanitary products for something they can't control? At this point, you just sound like a misogynist

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Yep I'm a basement dwelling incel misogynist who wants all women to get infections and die from period poverty

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Glad you know!

[–]Eleutherlothario 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

When it comes to health, men's needs are being addressed. Prostrate cancer is being researched and checked. Lots of research and treatment for heart attacks. Women have more unique health issues due to biology and even if you want to label women's health care as "special privileges" , I'm perfectly fine with that. I would disagree with that label because the health programs are based on a tangible, identifiable need.

As stated elsewhere, this is a really stupid hill to die on. You are wrong, plain and simple

[–]IanHawkess1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Then let’s come together to implement these social programs? Maybe one of the reasons is that we don’t advocate for ourselves in the way that we need to.

[–]Any_Drama3272 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

All of this. Believe me, I want my fiancé to be on top of his A game for his health issues so he doesn’t die young and I’m left with just getting a cat to name after him instead.

But it’s culturally normalized for ‘tough men don’t get sick or need doctors’ behavior when I would love for men to be more proactive about their health ;(

[–]TheSoviet_Onion -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yet to see people demand free food or larger apartments/cars/seats on public transportation for men

[–]KnackwurstNightmare 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Generally, the recommended daily calorie intake is 2,000 calories a day for women and 2,500 for men.

The average person in Britain spends almost £4,500 on food annually.

Assuming 50:50 sex ratio, men MUST, on average, spend £1,000 more per year to avoid malnutrition.

A more realistic estimate of the average cost of periods is about £128 a year, or £10 a month.

So the male caloric needs cost inequality is approximately 8 times greater than the female menstrual products inequality. You can roughly double that if you consider that women only menstruate for about half their life while men eat for their entire life.

So... 16x the cost is borne by men. Where do I go to get my free food?

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points42 points 3 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

I hope anyone glancing over this sub realizes most of us are okay with this and understand OP is in the wrong here.

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

It's incredible how people are tripping over themselves trying to make sure everyone knows how much MRAs support free period products. Geez. Just state your opinion and move on

[–]Notwithmyanus 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just state your opinion and move on

Ironic given your responses to the comments on this post. You picked an atrociously stupid hill to die on honey I can't lmao.

[–]bigdtbone 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, it would be great if the mods would take this post down.

[–]IanHawkess1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

Leave it up! The responses speak for themselves, and it’s a very good counterpoint to the ‘these are all women-hating basement dwelling incels’ stuff that we see.

[–]Any_Drama3272 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Tbh yeah there’s a lot of posts that do make this subreddit seem like basement dwelling incels who are mad at that one woman from 15 years ago that wouldn’t date them… I’ll admit I’m a little surprised and hopeful that there’s a better future for both genders after some things get sorted first.

[–]Ferbuggity 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be fair?. I see way more hate from women toward men on the feminist subs, even on issues sane people would have to agree with. At least here, the majority don't grandstand prejudicial views just 'because women'. Look at the overwhelming responses supporting this issue, right here.

[–]bigdtbone 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, ok

[–]Accomplished_Shoe_31 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Problem being they’ll just show his post not the comments calling him a idiot

[–]DavidByron2 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This article was thankfully NOT from a feminist perspective but a poverty perspective so I think it's fine. There's only one line that looks dodgy:

Scotland's social justice secretary Shona Robison said providing access to free period products was "fundamental to equality and dignity".

Obviously she means sex equality and that's a lie as you'd expect from someone who's title sounds like "professional anti-male bigot".

But this is Scotland folks - the most left wing area of the UK. They got a lot of services for poor people and period products are quasi medical supplies right? They have free health care there.

If this was in the USA where the poor never get shit, then it would look sexist but in Scotland it really doesn't seem sexist.

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Would you rather they wrote the law to give free period products to men too?

This is silly. Women deal with periods by virtue of being women. I have zero issue with this being covered for them.

[–]orione16 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They actually put these products in men's public toilets too.

[–]user3-24324 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

How is this a problem?

[–]superstonkape 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s not

[–]zeyals 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's a special privilege to have your bodily fluids disposed of? Lmao

[–]orione16 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A better angle for this post would have been the outcry from feminists that the person in charge of implementing this program is - shock horror - a MAN!

[–]Any_Drama3272 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

This is the dumbest complaining I’ve ever seen, I just had to take a screenshot.

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

The feminist trolls are out in full force on this one. It's probably time you headed back to twox now

[–]Any_Drama3272 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Except it’s not trolling to tell someone when they’re saying the dumbest fucking shit.

Even the regulars on here are telling you how fucking stupid you’re being and you just don’t know when to shut your mouth before more idiocy floods out.

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

The regulars have disagreed with me, but stopped short of calling me a fucking idiot. I am proud that you have the freedom to call me that here and not get banned. That says a lot about men and men's rights. Whereas over at twox I got banned for suggesting a particular body feature is not attractive. See the difference?

[–]Any_Drama3272 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

LMAOOOOOO

Dude either you need to get on medication or therapy, or something because you’re out of touch with reality.

[–]jesusandpals727 25 points26 points27 points 3 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Its posts like this that keep people shitting on this sub. I don't see the problem. This is something women cannot control. Like condoms being free, you can just not have sex, but a woman can't just not have her period.

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (9 children) | Copy Link

Men can't control the growth of hair on their face. Free razors for all?

[–]jesusandpals727 23 points24 points25 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

So hair growing off of a person's face (which also includes women lol) is the same as blood uncontrollably pouring out of someone's genitals? Yeah dude, don't die on this hill lol.

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link

No, it's not the same. But it is similar. Address my argument

[–]jesusandpals727 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I addressed your argument. I'm not responsible for you disliking what I said tho.

[–]Some-Temperature-587 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So food should be free?

[–]Ferbuggity 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Are you seriously arguing against the poorest women and girls receiving free sanitary items?

Really?

[–]LedRedNed 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women need razors too. And we pay for them just like men do. Let‘s compare it with toilet paper please. Imagine you have diarrhea for one week each month and no public place offers you toilet paper.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He did. Your argument is just dumb.

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is in no way similar enough for the argument you're trying to make.

[–]wibblywobbly420 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Most women also shave and many even shave their faces. Why not free razors for all?

[–]TheSoviet_Onion -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Men need way more calories than women just to literally not die, I've yet to see someone demand free food aid for men.

[–]1viewfromhalfwaydown 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This is a stupid argument because then the end result would be everyone gets free food, but men still consume larger portions. But then some women would need to consume larger portions than some men, so gender wouldn't even be a conversation. It would be based on the individual. Unless they are born with/develop some syndrome, all women get periods.

[–]TheSoviet_Onion 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Exactly, so why are period products free and food not? Why isn't everything a person needs free?

And if you claim "equality" then we should look at literally every individual persons need and give them free stuff based on that need.

Only giving specific extra support of women is cherries on top "equality" aka sexism against everyone else who is not benefitting from it.

[–]Notwithmyanus -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yikes lol you must be in middle school

[–]Mycroft033 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

This sounds like something that’s pretty reasonable. Look if we’re gonna go down the ‘free stuff’ route, this isn’t a bad extension of it just on face value.

I wouldn’t consider it a special privilege either, since periods are a special burden to women, and it makes sense that this goes to alleviate the strain of the burden. Both genders benefit, not equally, but the benefit that both genders get is proportional to the amount of trouble they are caused. Dads no longer have to pay for their daughters tampons. The main benefit falls to women, but so does the main biological burden.

I’m personally against the whole ‘free stuff’ route since it leads to government overruns and way too much power taken away from your average person, but since we’re already going down the ‘free stuff’ route, we might as well recognize and attempt to alleviate asymmetrical biological burdens.

[–]brilliantkeyword -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I’m personally against the whole ‘free stuff’ route since it leads to government overruns and way too much power taken away from your average person,

What do you mean with this?

[–]Accomplished_Shoe_31 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Probably innovation, who’s going to buy new products when they can get something similar for free.

[–]NeoVidia 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

OP you’re in the wrong here. At least where I am BC for both sexes has been available (on and off sadly) covered by insurance. There is enough actually shitty things we should stand up against and the deck is already heavily stacked against us. And trying to take away privileges that are unique to their body is not one of those fights.

[–]stacyxxluv 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

Yes, having your period and not being able to afford proper product for it is such a privilege..

[–]Logical-Chaos-154 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Yeah... Free period products isn't special privilege. It's a courtesy.

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago* [recovered] (14 children) | Copy Link

Men don't get any similar "courtesy", hence making it a special privilege

[–]Logical-Chaos-154 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

I'm sorry, I don't want to deal with being surround by women whose pants are soaked in vag blood because they can't afford sanitary products. "Stanky vag blood" is not this season's new scent.

As it covers a biological need and benefits men as well, it is not a special privilege. Now, if it was free beer or something unnecessary, then I'd be pissed.

Don't say stanky you sound like Linda from Bob's Burgers.

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

It benefits men because they don't have to smell stinky vag blood? I just want to make sure I got your logic correctly

Plus lowered disease risk.

Men literally die if they don't buy and consume more food than women. How come period products are something that needs to be free but food (or water) isn't

[–]Logical-Chaos-154 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Look into the welfare programs in your area. Many assist with food, though this varies by country.

[–]TheSoviet_Onion -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Even if something like this was available, men with income will be shared to hell if they use this service.

Id sure like to get 15% larger apartments and cars for no extra cost and an extra 100€/month for food in the name of equality.

[–]Logical-Chaos-154 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you have income, you don't need assistance. Men also tend to make more money than women, covering the extra food cost. And as a 6'4" (1.93 meter) dude with wide shoulders, we don't need larger apartments.

Your argument also conviently ignores a certain issue: pregnancy. Women need more food (often a lot more) than men during this time. Unless no guy wants to have a genetic legacy?

[–]TheSoviet_Onion 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you have income, you don't need assistance. Men also tend to make more money than women, covering the extra food cost.

This is not part of equality though since men have to work for it. Or otherwise we could just tell women to do onlyfans and pay for their period products with their of income.

Your argument also conviently ignores a certain issue: pregnancy. Women need more food (often a lot more) than men during this time. Unless no guy wants to have a genetic legacy?

Pregnancy is a choice, and an insanely expensive choice if you choose to keep the kid. And how is that even a comparison since even if a woman would be pregnant like 20 times shed still end up needing less food in her lifetime as an average man (assuming that they die at the same age)

And yes as a tall man you don't "need" a larger apartment, but if you wanted to have the same living standards as a 163cm female you would indeed need a larger apartment.

160cm women do not "need" a 30m2 apartment either, they could have a 4m2 apartment and a shared kitchen and toilets.

Keep in mind that as a taller person your furniture and various other items you own will be larger and take more space, and you also need more space between chairs and tables since you have longer legs.

[–]Ferbuggity 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you had no money and bled uncontrollably out of your dick for five to seven days a month, I wouldn't begrudge you a few free sanitary products.

[–]TheSoviet_Onion 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why exactly is bleeding out of my dick worse than literally dying of starvation if I don't have money?

If you are going to make something free because people need it to live shouldn't you start with food and water.

[–]Throwawaysei95 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Registered dietitian here! You do realize men and women come in all different shapes and sizes, right? Some men may not need as many calories as some women and vice versa so your argument is null. And anyway, there are food assistance programs available.

[–]TheSoviet_Onion 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And some women do not have periods either?

If you are going to make something free to make poor people's lives easier then how about starring with water, food and housing

[–]Throwawaysei95 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with the water, food, and housing. And sure, some women do not get periods but majority do. Free period products would be incredibly helpful, especially for those living in poverty.

[–]Ferbuggity 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Not that I agree with him, but I believe he is arguing that the allotment of free stuff is the privilege, not the bleeding or poverty.

[–]stacyxxluv 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes I know. What I mean is that being able to afford proper products isn’t a privilege.

Some women or kids can’t afford it, so I think they should receive it. And that should not be looked at as a privilege. Many girls in Africa for instance skip school when they have their periods because they don’t have products to help them. It causes a lot of stress, embarrassment, and they fall behind on boys and students that can afford the products.

[–]Ferbuggity 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What I mean is that being able to afford proper products isn’t a privilege.

Yes I know all that.

I was just saying, why not just say what you mean. The syntax is easier.

Having the government provide free healthcare products for only one gender is a special privilege

[–]bigdtbone 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What the fuck are you on about? The NHS provides free health care services and products to everyone in Scotland.

[–]imextremelymoderate1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Then what is the purpose of this legislation if the products are already provided for free by the government?

[–]bigdtbone 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

These products weren’t provided previously, now they are. The point is that free medical care is universal in Scotland. It isn’t restricted to one sex.

Can't wait until men get free TRT because T levels lowering is one of the factors that causes us a ton of health issues, including dying sooner than women... any day now....

As always though, anything for women is more important than a man's health or even their life.

[–]Sininenn 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

There are WAY better menstrual product alternatives to single use pads and tampons.

This is legally enforced pollution...

[–]Any_Drama3272 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Nope, most tampons and pads are biodegradable these days, as advertised on the packages.

[–]Sininenn 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

That doesn't mean they don't pollute.

Bleaching the cotton to guarantee tampons/pads are sanitary pollutes, as indistrial bleaches are not natural.

Pads and tampons are also often wrapped, also for sanitary reason, individually, increasing the amount of single-use waste they produce.

Single use items pollute by default - even biodegradable ones, as opposed to items you can reuse for years, such as the menstrual cup, or menstruation underpants.

Both of which could be distributed to anyone, just like, for example, kids are being given reflexive stickers/accessories to improve their visibility in traffic.

Single-use products need to be phased out, not politically entrenched like this.

[–]Any_Drama3272 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Ah, many tampon brands are or already have switched over to eco friendly versions — but not everyone can use the menstruation cup and the underpants don’t work for everyone unfortunately— however it does look like your concerns about tampons and pads are being addressed.

[–]Sininenn 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I don't believe that there can be an eco-friendly single-use menstrual product, or any single use item.

They can't be made of recycled materials, or unbleached natural materials due to sanitary issues.

On top of that, they are, unfortunately, polluting by virtue of being single use and dispose.

If the cups and underwear aren't fitting, maybe some sort of washable pad could be an alternative.

[–]Any_Drama3272 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Hm, true, I have the impression you may know a little bit more about this subject than I do, so for now it sounds valid, thank you for the suggested alternative

[–]Sininenn 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's just common sense.

[–]Any_Drama3272 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]Sininenn 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I was referring to the points and realities I brought up regarding the production, use and disposal of single use products being damaging as common sense.

[–]Any_Drama3272 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Correcf, if it was common sense then this conversation and additional input from others wouldn’t be tbere

[–]Viali7 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Unfortunately, although I agree that single use products should be phased out where feasible, if a woman is so poor she can’t afford hygiene products then chances are good she also cannot access laundry machines and detergent on a daily basis. (If you use washable pads or underwear you NEED to wash them daily or they will STINK wherever you store them.) You basically have to have a home washer and dryer for that to be feasible. And as for cups, you need to be able to sanitize them frequently, meaning you need access to a working stove to boil it on. Many very poor people don’t have working stoves

[–]Sininenn 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be fully honest, I doubt that all women, even poor women, had issues washing their menstrual products before the invention of single use pads or tampons.

We're talking about centuries of human history.

That being said, I see the need for hygiene in our day and age, but I would concur that

  • menstrual cups require no more washing than a rinse and a scrub than a plate or a drinking cup, eventually an extra boil for sterilization, which might just be achieved by pouring boiling water from a kettle on top of it. One does not need a stove, just a way to boil water, which, honestly, can be done on a fireplace too, although at that point, I believe free bleeding is a preferable option. Washing stuff and boiling water is not an issue in the majority of the developed world, which is also the majority of single use menstrual products consumption.

  • there exist alternatives to electrical washing machines, which were developed specifically for developing countries without access to running water and/or electricity, for example the Wonderwash, which I am considering getting myself, which can be used for regular washing of small loads

Oh f, I didn’t think about this shit.

I tried using the diva cup but…

If you thought sneezing with a tampon is bad… it turns out there is nothing more terrifying than feeling an incoming sneeze with a diva cup locked and loaded.

You become a human fucking water balloon like that scene from Carrie. Thus why I never used them ever again.

[–]Ferbuggity 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Omfg... forgive me for laughing at the sneeze. It's bad enough with a pad, can't imagine an internal blood bucket sloshing about.

My ex used to ask me if I was on my "Carrie day", bless his heart.

Dude depending on your muscles, it WILL squeeze it so it’s like… imagine holding an egg in your hand and then squeezing it until it pops.

That’s the whole experience. Had someone looking at me for injuries as if I was just shot. So… no diva cup pls.

Carrie day is a good one, I’ll have to file that away.

[–]StudentOfTheTruth1 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think this is unconscionable. The law is not means-tested. Meaning that women get free products (paid mostly from men's taxes), NO MATTER HOW RICH THEY ARE. So multimillionaire and billionaire women will get free products.

Meanwhile there are no free razors or other shaving and hygiene products for men no matter how poor.

So: billionaire woman gets free products, homeless man gets nothing.

Simply mind boggling that this can happen in a free democracy. Something is so rotten in this horrible system.
