Authority figures have power, a 21 year old has a huge advantage over a 16 year old. For both of those reasons, what she did was wrong. This is why statutory rape laws exist, and why teachers - like psychotherapists and others in positions of power - are held to higher standards.

Children having sanctioned relationships with adults in many cultures is often cited as reason it should not be a crime in Western civilization. But that is not an accurate comparison: third-world countries that have such traditions also have drastically different societies. Seriously, comparing a place where people are starving and letting your underage son/daughter marry an older person is the only sure way to save them from starvation - with America? I'm sorry, but it's not the same - not even close.

Then there's the "16 is really close to 21" crowd. I'm guessing most of them have forgotten just how vulnerable and confused they were at 16. Or maybe they were in the nearly-zero percentage of those who had their shit totally together at 16.

Wrong is wrong.

Clearly you do not understand "position of power" and clearly you are not familiar with basic laws found in all civilized nations. Cops can't have consensual sex with the prisoners, doctors can't have consensual sex with their patients, judges with the people they over-see, teachers with their students, coaches with their players, etc. Pay attention in school ffs.

A 21 yr old only has sex with a 16 yr old to enjoy the power difference. There is no reason she couldn't just have sex with someone her own age. It is very unlikely that he benefited from this power difference, it is most likely that he will feel bad. You might say 'so what' but people kill themselves over breakups all the time (more than any other reason). Further men who have sex with a woman often go to large efforts to please that woman, he might stop studying etc, this is only to his benefit if mutual. There is no reason to enter into a mutual relationship with a non-adult, they don't actually bring anything to the table. It is unlikely the kid will dump her being that he is the one without the power. (Though yes the term rape should not be used here - I'm not disagreeing just clarifying what I see here).
