No, they're trying to change the definition to suit their needs. In their view, they likely would say that Patriarchy is a system in which men are privileged by gender, therefore even if they are victims of gender, overall the system is still benefiting them.

Easy, claim to be transgendered. Say you're a woman. When they insist you act nothing like a woman, insist back that there is no such thing as gender roles don't exist. When they point to your penis, insist gender has nothing to do with genitals. They have nothing left to point to without causing contradiction.

It isn't sociology in which this definition is used, it is women's studies. Some sociologists have adopted it, but it isn't standard. The definition is "sexism is prejudice + power". You can google that phrase to learn more about the definition.

Their argument only works if you assume the majority of those in power being men means men as a group have power, and then assume that since men as a group has power all individual men have power.

One clarification. She did make an exception for transgender and homosexual males, though it's unclear why she decided to draw the line there.

This definition is not common to all sociologists. It's a very important distinction to make, because sociology is a broad church encompassing a wide variety of approaches (as contrasted to the lay view, which tends to over-emphasise the importance of left-wing and radical schools).

For general purposes I'd have said the dictionary definition pretty much covers it:

"sexism [ˈsɛksɪzəm] n (Sociology) discrimination on the basis of sex, esp the oppression of women by men"

So you can see that the standard sociological definition encompasses sexism against either gender, though with an emphasis on sexism against women. Anything else should be understood as a specialist description, i.e. from a particular ideology. Hope that helps some.

Well no, it's bullshit. But it is an accurate representation of the definition often used in the soft sciences.

It was a necessary revision to maintain the base assumption that white males are always the oppressor and nonwhites and females always the oppressed. So for instance driving whites off their land and hacking them up with machetes because they are white in Zimbabwe would seem to contradict this central tenant. However, with the power of revisionism we can prove that only the whites in that scenario are racist and oppressive.
