All right everyone, hold up. Before we break out the pitchforks on LEGO and swear to never buy their products again, one thing must be said. LEGO doesn't run the parks- they're run by a British company called Merlin Entertainments.

Furthermore, after a bit of research, it seems that the park that the man was denied access to was a Legoland Discovery Center, not a major Legoland park, such as the ones in Denmark and California. The distinction between the two is that the Discovery Centers are smaller and are targeted solely at a 3-12 year old demographic and have a "no adults only" restriction. Which means that if you want to go to Legoland, you can, as long as it's not a Discovery Center.

Everyone here does realize that this isn't like they denied him entry because he was a man right? It is because Legoland has a policy not to allow any adults (male, female, trans, pan, etc.) into the park without a child with them. Again, I reiterate, no woman or man or any other kind of adult regard less of sex over the age of 17 is permitted into the park.

This isn't an issue of men being discriminated against, but the elderly.

This is not Legoland, it's a version of it designed specifically for 3-12 year old kids.

There are LOTS of places that are designed for kids, and have rules like this:

No adults admitted without children.
No children admitted without adults.

You don't have to have your OWN kid, if a party of 5 adults and one child goes in, fine, the point is it's for families.

As a parent, I like that I can go places where things are designed around the children. You can let them run and play, and the only adults there are people that are ALSO there for the kids. There may be adults on the play structures. But that's okay, because they are dads and they are being careful of the children.

I don't have to worry about 10 19-year-olds coming in and laughing and swearing and climbing on stuff, and not being careful of the children because they aren't parents and frankly don't CARE about the children, they are there for their own amusement.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all in favor of adults still liking kid stuff. I used to still go to playgrounds before I had kids of my own. But I did it at night when I wasn't getting in the kids' way. Because let's face it, the playground is theirs. It was designed with them in mind.

Surely we aren't going to "Title IX" stuff for kids? Adults have plenty of stuff just for them, kids should be able to as well. I remember being pissed I couldn't ride the kiddie coaster at an amusement park once because I didn't have a kid with me. It was a KIDS' coaster, and adults could ride because they were CHAPERONES. Yeah, I wanted to ride it. Tough crap on me. There were plenty of big coasters the kids COULDN'T ride at all; why should they have to wait longer for their coaster just because I thought it'd be funny to ride a tiny one?

There are parents who nevertheless act inappropriately at these places, I'll grant you, but by excluding adults-without-kids, the kid-centric purpose of the venue in the first place can be maintained much easier. I am all for it.

I mean, my own kids can't go to certain places anymore that are only for children under 42" and such. Which sucks sometimes because they would probably still have fun there, but it's meant to be a safe place for very small children and they should be able to have it.

Doesn't sound like a male issue. The adult female was also barred. He wasn't barred on account of him being a male, he was barred on account of them being too old for a kids' place.

Chuck E Cheese has the same policy, and it is applied to men and women. I always assumed it was to prevent these places from being overrun with 20-something year olds looking to have fun, which might drive away families. Does anybody know how many children are actually abducted by sexual predators every year ? I mean , somebody should actually dig that number up and bring it to the attention of every business that has one of these nutty policies.

I'm willing to bet that there are less than a hundred every year. Hell , even it's a thousand , let's put that in perspective : Canada and the U.S. have a combined population of about 350,000,000. So that works out to 1/3,500,000. Those are the odds that a complete stranger will abduct a kid.

Okay , so no , that's not at all correct but you're still talking about 1 out of millions. And that's IF it's as high as 1,000 kids a year abducted by complete strangers.

So let's apply that logic to other areas : How many people die in car accidents every year ? What are your odds of being killed in one ? 1/10,000 ? Well , we'd better ban all vehicles. How many airplanes crash every year ? How many flights end in a crash landing ? Well , we'd better ban airplanes. How many Asian women cut off their spouse's penises ? Better ban Asian women obviously.

It's completely ridiculous and a sign of our cultural paranoia. We have become a culture completely obsessed with sex and sex crimes.

legoland does have adult nights by the way...as for their requirements for entry, i think they are going about it the wrong way. i consider the child requirement kinda like why mcdonalds have the playlands in some of their locations, so that a child grows up as mcdonalds being a fun place to go. so with lego, they want to get the kids in there, not me and my delinquent mind of building the biggest most badass car to race down the tracks they have their for my kid. they want the kids growing up with this stuff...and i don't blame them, i seem to be one of the only few of my friends that has or still plays with lego...get it to the kids...

if they let just anyone one in, it would be no fun for the kids...lets face it, i have been in there, building cars for my kids to race and had a bunch of adults all huddled around fighting for parts in the bins and the kids cant get to them...lol...

I was in Legoland in Denmark with my wife last summer and had no trouble getting in. Actually we arrived there a good three hours before closing time and got in free.

This isn't the Legoland sculpture garden like the one in Denmark or Carlsbad California. This is a Legoland Discovery Center. They have one here in DFW at Grapevine Mills Mall. Its not a sculpture garden. Its basically a Lego themed carnival. Its where you dump your kid off for supervised fun while you go shopping. Ya, I get that there was a Toronto skyline exhibit at this Center, but its still a Lego-themed daycare center.

This is bemusing, lego has a massive fan following into adulthood, artists even use it. Could be a bit of a PR disaster for them really. If you like Lego as an adult, you're a paedophile probably isn't the best slogan to use in advertizing. Especially as the vast majority of Lego is probably bought by adults for children and not by children.

Generally only men are viewed as a danger to children. Therefore it's a safe assumption to make that men were a primary motivator in creating the policy even though it's stated in a gender neutral way. Men also like Legos much more than women do, especially as adults, but are less likely to have custody of a child in order to be able to go. So even though it's gender neutral, it clearly affects men more. Still, I like that they have an adult night, because being crowded by other people's children sucks.

Most of the people who design Legos are probably men as well. I see Legos as a tradition passed from father to son, just like baseball or camping trips. It's really lame that in our PC culture men who enjoy things that they can do with their kids get looked at as potential pedophiles instead of potential fathers.
