Because it's made up out of whole cloth. The source was originally a 1975 book by Susan Brownmiller, who claimed she heard it in a lecture from a judge who was probably making an off-the-cuff remark rather than a factual statement and, when follow-up research was done about the number, the judge's clerks did not know why he threw-out a number like that. So the number came from a person speaking casually without evidence over 40 years ago, yet this is now an unarguable FACT, unchanging with time. This is how fucked-up the discourse is.

In reality, no one has a concrete idea how many are false. Regardless, the old guideline of how "it's better to let 10 guilty people go free than 1 innocent person go to jail" is not only suspended, but actually inverted for this one crime alone.

The feminist discourse on rape is a convoluted collection of over-emotional and self-contradictory panic. We are supposed to unquestioningly believe the total truth of a woman's rape story, while simultaneously being fully aware of the possibility that she might be too traumatized by the experience to even get the story right. It leaves no room for a presumption of innocence or a fair trial because guilt is presupposed and the accuser is supposedly too traumatized to be cross-examined. In that direction, madness lies.

When you strip-away all of the posturing, you basically reach the conclusion that they simply want men to be jailed on a woman's say-so, regardless of hard evidence, which is what the 2006 Duke Lacrosse rape hoax revealed. If only to send a warning to any other would-be rapist (which, in radical feminist discourse, is pretty much every man who has ever walked the earth).

They do. They seriously think a false rape accusation requires an automatic presumption of guilt. Innocence is no defence to a rape accusation.

She completely forgets about the severity of the consequence. You need to take that into account, as well as the rarity or otherwise of the event; think insurance for rare events like your house burning down.

Because it doesn't affect them.

Ideological answer : There are no false rape accusations, only rapists that beat the system because patriarchy.

Serious answer (from feminist perspective): They are so rare that talking about them only functions as a distraction from the real problems like rape culture.

CORRECT answer : Because it undermines their narrative on a very fundamental level. The goal of feminism is female supremacy and absolute power without any responsibility to go with that power. A false rape accusation goes counter to this and so you get the bullshit responses I mentioned.

The 2% number is bullshit, it's from a speech by an assistant DA, not any real study, no one knows the real number, it's thought to be somewhere between 4 and 10%, but a lot depends on how you define "false".

This false statistic comes to us from Northeastern University researcher David Lisak in 2010.

Of the 136 sexual assault cases studied over a 10 year period, it was determined that 5.9% were "false accusations". The margin of error was corrected to "2-8%". Which in feminist language equals "less than 2%".

Read the book The Campus Rape Frenzy: The Attack on Due Process at America's Universities for a scathing take down of this egregiously misleading "statistic".

The stat doesn't even make sense given feminism's own bullshit parameters. Taken from Rainn.org's website:

Out of every 1,000 sexual assaults, 994 assailants walk free.

Their next stat repeats David Lisak's claim, "2-8% of rape claims are false accusations".

By that logic, out of 1,000 sexual assault cases, 20-80 should fall into the category of "walking free".

Thus, by their own metric, the corollary statistic should be, "920-980 assailants walk free". Not 994 out of 1,000.

In other words, when there is a false accusation, it often gets (deliberately) miscatergorized by feminists as being a "non conviction".

Consider this for a moment. What are all of these "non convictions" if they aren't false accusations?

Yet another example of how much of feminist theory is built upon lies and false statistics in order to mislead the public.

I'm guessing if you are on this sub, you probably know this already.

Tl;dr - Feminists are using false statistics in order to push the narrative.

As with any movement, lies and propaganda help fuel the fire, motivate people. When it sounds benevolent, its even more effective. In this case, rape is as tvtropes puts it 'a special kind of evil' and at a fundamental level, the entire human race knows its wrong. It helps push the idea that rape is so commonplace, and i will say, i've known far too many people who have been raped, absolutely, but accusing the other 98% of the male population, making them fear pissing off any woman is fuckin garbage.

For many its also a powerful tool, men still get their lives absolutely ruined by rape accusations. Shunned, rejected, their careers going down the tubes. That kind of power is hard to give up, after all, tyrants rarely tire of tyranny.

Even if only 2% of accusations are false, doesn't mean we should abandon due process: that's 2% of accused men unjustly sent to prison. Rape is the least common violent crime short of murder. Does that mean we should decriminalize it?

Leaving aside strategic denialism I suspect feminist genuine disbelief of the frequency of false accusations comes from failing to realise not all women are like them. Feminism is mostly a movement of white middle class educated professionals.

Having read a lot of case summaries of false reports they tend to involve young or immature girls and women, huge intoxication, drug mixtures, unfaithfulness.
An environment of overbearing religosity / slut shaming / prudery / "family honour" etc. is common.
A history of abusive parenting and abusive partners is common, along with the mental illnesses common to that background.
Getting trapped in a lie is a frequent theme. Accusations may be generated thoughtlessly in desperation over some relatively minor matter, then they grow out of control. Control is a common theme - false accusers are not typically people in control of their lives. They may be crippled by anxiety, so "can't" admit something a normal person would be able to.

And then there are psychopaths and narcissists. Children and teens can also display psychopathic behaviour which they will grow out of, it is not too uncommon.

Female here. While it is rare for false reports to occur, I know plenty of people who do care about false accusations. Those tend to be in the spotlight (That guy from Catfish, etc), and it reinforces old stereotypes (victims who come forward are liars, the whole shabang). So people just do not come forward when they truely are victims. I would say much more people care about false rape accusations than the internet portrays

I think the number is much higher than 2%. 2% is only the number proven to be false. But, for the sake of argument, lets assume for a minute that the 2% is accurate. That is 1 false accusation for every 50. And we all know that an accusation might as well be a conviction in terms of the devastation done to your life. How many activities would you willingly engage in with a 1 in 50 change of absolutely ruining your life?
