I got divorced in Michigan. There isn't a clear statutory guideline, so if you go to trial it is a roll of the dice. In mediation, we found that it's common practice for alimony to be 1/3 of the length of marriage. There is a computer program that's pretty standard and it defaults to that, and then you negotiate from there. We settled on 5 years of alimony, after 14 years of marriage. 4 yrs and 2 months left to go. Best wishes

Get out of there you don’t have any time to waste whoever files for custody quicker it’s usually better keep your head up don’t drag this through the dirt just to end up paying more

I too do not know MI laws, but typically alimony like that would only happen after 10years of marriage….something to look into with a lawyer. Also assume you will have to pay child support, but that is based on custody and income…another thing to ask your lawyer.

If she’s already threatening that, assume she’s looking into her options…consultations are usually free, better to be prepared than caught with your pants down… Good luck!

Not Michigan-specific but these days it’s rare to get indefinite spousal support. They have to prove a need for it and usually it is ordered for a set duration—for example, long enough to get reestablished at a job or to finish a degree if she’s been staying at home. Don’t let her threaten you, but definitely get a good attorney if it seems like she’s trying to make a profit off of the split

The longer you are married, the more likely and longer the alimony will be. Cut your loses now or you will get the pain and then some further down the road.

Brother, you don't have to pay alimony for a 4 year marraige in MI. My lawyer laughed at the fact that my wife of 4 years requested alimony. Simply stated that 4 years wasnt nearly long enough.

I just went through a divorce last year in Michigan. We were married 9 years and have 2 kids, 7 & 9. I make about 90k more than her per year and ended up with 50/50 custody, $400 a month in child support and I could have really fought for no alimony but agreed to 4 years at $200 a month that I paid in a lump sum.

According to my attorney, alimony is typically no longer than half the duration of the marriage unless it's a lengthy marriage, particularly where one spouse doesn't work. Good luck to you man, everyone's situation is different but I hope this helps.

A judge is more likely to award permanent spousal support in long-term marriages. This is especially true if the party getting the support is older than 60, has little education or work experience, and has little or no income. Even if spousal support is called “permanent support,” the payments may end at retirement when the parties start sharing in pension or retirement benefits.

With only four years, it is likely the alimony laws are in your favor. That is not long term. Do NOT let it get to long term. The danger is severe. With each passing month and year, your alimony risk rises exponentially. Don’t sleep on this. You have an untrustworthy spouse looking to make you a financial slave the rest of your life.

Don’t wait. Don’t fuck around. You need to understand, and confront, precisely what you are dealing with, and it will be unpleasant. Accept it, and you must do what needs to be done. Now. Now. Now. Now. Now.

If you ignore this straightforward advice, recognize you are screwing yourself in the worst possible way — and now you will have only yourself to blame.

I wouldn’t allow her to threaten me like that, I would say no with equal rights woman are required to go back to work and support them selves and custody is normally 50/50 now a days with minimal cs support. All assets are split 50/50. So is all debt!
