A lawyer, a good lawyer knows you, your interests, has no emotion, and is your endless advocate. Not having a lawyer, or having a bad one, is putting you at a disadvantage. Put your stress and emotions on the lawyer and find a way to trust rhem.

You can negotiate with her lawyer, pro se, of course. You can simply pay a lawyer hourly to advise you on this if you wanted, but ultimately you’re acting on your own behalf and have to be comfortable with that should it end up in court.

Here’s the way I look at it.

Imagine you own a business with a partner. The two of you built a successful company for 20 years. And now you’ve decided to part ways. But your partner is upset and thinks he’s going to get screwed. This separation will require a valuation of the company and assessment of future earnings. It will require the transfer of large sums of hard earned money.

Would you do this without the guidance of a lawyer? I wouldn’t.

This is what a divorce is.

If you can both be reasonable and come to a fair agreement on your own than you don’t need to pay a ton of money to a lawyer.

Unfortunately usually at least one of the spouses can’t seem to act like an adult and either tries to take just about everything and / or wreck the other spouse. This is where the lawyer protects you.

Also the settlement agreement needs to be well written, especially when it comes to custody & financial support otherwise it could lead to future legal battles when somebody tries to exploit a loophole.

Most lawyers are hourly anyway. If you don't want them to go to the negotiations, just tell them, and they won't bill you.

My ex and I were very amicable in our divorce and neither of us hired a lawyer. Saved us both a lot of money in the long run. Paid like $350 total in court fees

Laws are very nuisanced, and legal language doesn't always correspond with every-day language. Additionally, some things might not be obvious, such as child support being modifiable even if the child support is agreed upon and signed in a divorce agreement. Sure, you can do it yourself, but even a small mistake can be costly in the long run. Not all lawyers banter, and not all simply want to milk you for your money.
