I found improv to work for me.. like pulling topics from the environment.. example like you said commenting on the weather.. but what I do when approaching someone is I’m scanning the room before time. Then I find a topic and that’s my ice breaker

I think the pizza box line is a little weird because when would you be in a pizza shop long enough to take your coat off?

Anyway, comments on the weather or an article of clothing are about as neutral as you can get but I try to go with something just a little more engaging and situational sometimes, so for instance if we are at the beach I could ask if they know how to swim and wanna take a dip or can be my lifeguard because I never learned or something ridiculous like that. I am at the beach alot so this one gets a good amount of use.

I also often will just be like perfect day for the beach and that’s a great conversation starter too. If a girl is open to talking to you, the line doesn’t matter she will talk to you.

The moment you start planning a move ahead you stop being genuine, and people feel it when someone is trying to be genuine. Most importantly you will also feel it and be awkward and self conscious about it.

stop planning things to say ahead, it is a bad habit that we very often justify yet it kills self confidence, as it is teaching you that you need gimmicks for people to give you value. Thus subconsciously confirming to yourself that you do not have great value

Allow yourself to be yourself, just put yourself into general situations with different kinds of people and activities and just do whatever comes to mind in the moment, part of that is to stop forcing the plot and not constantly making moves, and to just be there and enjoy the moment for whatever it is, even a silent moment can be enjoyed.

mechanical drills are the best, but they arent natural, id say using a big rock, or a strong stick could work very well when trying to break ice

I mainly use my surrounding environment to engage others in conversation and test the waters.

Example: I was at whole foods for some groceries and I got hungry so I went to the hot bar section for food. There was another woman there also perusing so I thought it was a perfect segway to conversating with her.

So I just said "What's good?" to which she replied "Oh, I'm good how are you?"-Very clearly with a smile. I just looked there realizing that what's good could mean two very different things and she quickly realized that I was talking about the food. She immediately noticed and started blushing, resting her hand on my arm jokingly like she made herself look silly.

I answered to her, "I'm doing better now that we're talking, but I've been out all day running errands and I'm starving."

To answer my question of what 'food' was good, she recommended a few items and I grabbed some of what she recommended in front of her to show her I wasn't just trying to make small talk.

She invited me to take a seat with her and chit-chat in the café there.

You don't need little "tricks" to start conversations. Just introduce yourself. Say "Hi, I'm X." Or compliment them. Don't be scared. These disingenuous "indirect" approaches are for losers.

All lines are stupid and cheesy. Smile and say hi and most importantly project confidence. Looking good is important also so good grooming, dress nice, fit body, etc..

Think of it like this: being direct makes it Man to Woman at a high and overt level. If you are an attractive man, you can go in with anything, even a "hey" or "hey excuse me" "you must be from the midwest the way you're surviving this cold" [she responds] "any lessons from home you can pass on?") and within the conversation make it man to woman more subtly by using push-pulls (you're trouble, don't look at me like that, you and I wouldn't get along, I wasn't sure about that dress but you're changing my mind about it, part of me kind of loves you and part of me kind of hates you) to compliments about something she wasn't born with (you look fantastic in that dress btw, that was literally the adorable thing I've seen what you just did, etc.) to teasing (I thought I loved you until you just did that, you definitely just lost points for that, wow I expected more from a girl like you) -- etc. etc.

The point is this: You already assert a man to woman frame non-verbally with your physicality, you likely already assert it with the regular conversation and questions you ask, and then you also spice it up subtly or directly with levels of directness, push-pulls, compliments, teases, qualifications, etc. So if everything is firing, you likely can tone down the directness unless you want to say something like 'hey I like your look. who are you?"

You can start conversations on anything.
