Smile when you walk in, and keep smiling. Project your voice from your diaphragm. Open immediately, tell people you're from out of town. Work hard to remember names of people and one or two things about each person. Once you know a few people, introduce them to each other. Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat. Keep talking to people and introducing them to others. You don't have to get on a table and dance around, you don't have to be super-funny or a clown, just keep doing this until you've talked to EVERYONE. You will become the social epicenter of this gathering. I know that talking to everyone there will be scary at first, but DON'T BITCH OUT. Once you run shit, ask for numbers and you will receive them.

To be honest, what works for me is to act like you belong there, but admit you know nobody.

Talking to strangers is the best because you have nothing to lose and everyone at parties are open to new people.

Give guys the 'head nod' and a how's it going. If you want to participate in something, just ask what's going on and make body language as if you want to join.

At parties, people travel in groups. Meet some guys first it's easier to bro out for a few minutes. Guys know women whether friends or girlfriends. From there start your chain. When a chain ends..move to a new one.

go in guns blazing. Be loud and confident right away, introduce yourself to the very first people you see then move on and work the room. Be happy to see people. Eventually you will have gone from "hey you stranger" to "hey rotoreuter48!" It's important to start the very moment you walk in, sets the tone for the rest of the party I find. If you work the whole room and continue to move around it displays a good level of confidence, additionally don't forget to use body language and contact to assert yourself as a confident dude. Good handshakes for intros then when you see people again later on, hands on their shoulders briefly or joking around by pushing them demonstrates confidence plus it puts you out as a fun dude. Everybody is looking for people they know at a largely anonymous party, they all want to demonstrate higher social value by knowing more people, be that dude that everyone knows by the end of the night.

As soon as you walk in, say hello to the first group of people who make eye contact with you. If you've got confident body language you should get people looking at you as soon as you walk in who are interested in talking with you.

Just say hello. It's that simple. They don't have to be the coolest people in the room, so you can just say normal stuff to them (how do you know [host of party] is always a good start). Once you've talked with them for a bit, you can move onto meeting other people, and if you get really awkward you can always fall back to them (but don't get clingy, unless you're having heaps of fun with them).

Once you're in one group of people, you might want to lean into other closeby groups and say hi. If you really do want to become the "life" of the party, you do it by merging those groups and bringing people together. Introduce people you've just met to each other if they don't know one another - "Hey x have you met y". Even if they know each other, this dialogue allows them to say "oh yeah I know x".

edit: I met one of my really good friends at a party where I knew nobody doing the exact things as above. He still remembers that day and thought I was really "somebody" when I started talking with him, and he thought I knew everyone, but I'm just a normal guy that knew nobody there.

As someone who has been the life of the party before, being funny helps. If you can't be funny, don't fret. I've seen tons of people that were life of parties and weren't even that funny. The key is: HAVE FUN. If you can have fun, other people will have fun with you. People will want to know why that guy is having so much fun, then they'll think to themselves, "Hey maybe if I hang out with him, I'll have fun too." Have fun, and other people will have fun with you. Then of course, you want to talk to everyone. You want to listen, you want to make them feel good about themselves. Ask them what their goals are, what their hobbies are. Let them know that you think its amazing that they have these aspirations, or that its fantastic that they've accomplished what they have done so far. Tell them they should be very proud of themselves.

One redditor suggested to remember their names. I can't tell you how important this is. Many people can't remember other's names. If you can, that puts you ahead of the game. People don't expect that you would remember them after meeting them just once and if you do, it makes them feel special.

As for # closes, if you have done all of the above and were successful, all you would need to do is just ask. "Hey, you and I should hang out sometime. Mind if I give you a call?" Of course you'll strike out a few times that's given. Just remember. Its a numbers game. The more you ask, the more you'll get. So good luck on your endeavor this weekend! Just go hang out with people that you either know or know off, and get those 2 friends to introduce you to some people. People are usually welcoming at parties, and worst case scenario they may get so drunk they forget you being awkward/fucking up.

Can you drive? Being a designated driver is a good excuse to not drink. Could you bring a rare brand of alcohol free beers that wont be recognised, so people will not notice you aren't drinking?

Do you have any party tricks such as card tricks, or can you remember any of the proposition bets from tv shows such as 'The Real Hustle'? (People will have seen them on TV but they wont remember how it's done.)

Are any of the people at the party, friends of friends? If so, ask your friends about them. That way, when you meet them, you'll know a bit about them. Don't know or say too much, the trick is to get them to talk to you. So you might find out that your flatmate (or whoever is the link between you and the new person) shared a good night out or a holiday with that new person, or maybe they helped each other out at a difficult time in their lives (nothing too dark, maybe a hard class or team). You would be aware of them of course because your friend, so you say, often tells the story of what a party animal/decent person they are, and you have been looking forward to meeting them and putting a face to the name you have heard so much about. Hopefully, they will then launch into the story of how they know your friend.

It might help to take this attitude - you are going to the party to have fun, if you don't, the party was no fun, not you. The people you don't know should be GGGs and welcome you, or make a point of ensuring your comfort specifically because you don't know many people there. If they don't, that's a fail on their part. Sure some people would have become the life and soul but it is very human to be uncomfortable in that situation -which is precisely why it is good hosting to look after you. Don't feel it's only you, many people would make extra effort to involve you once they are aware, because they have been there themselves and will want you to have a good time with them. Those are the people you'd want as friends anyway.

Not knowing anyone is also a great excuse to start or stop talking to people - if it goes well, great, if not, it's the perfect reason to excuse yourself and go meet someone else. After all, you have a whole party to meet! As a bonus, each time you change groups, you can use your party trick all over again :-)

I cant help you with being the life of the party but as a non drinker (i had pancreatitis) i always get the 'what are you drinking? oh, why not?' question. If people react negatively and want to to drink my response is usually a jokey "Yeah, i'm allowed like 1 sip of beer an hour and i just had it im afraid" or something like that.
