First of all, you should have talked to the other girl and the guy too. Whenever I talk to somebody with a group of people, I always ask her who the other people are and I get them to introduce me. That way, I look less like a creep to them (and her) and I figure out if she is there with a boyfriend or something. You would be fucking amazed at how many girls will strike up a long, deep conversation with you and pretend they are interested with their boyfriend standing right there. I was once talking to a girl at a bar in Miami and we were having a GREAT interaction and she goes "so, you seem like the total package ... good looking, smart, funny, great job, why are you single?" I explain to her why I am single and then I go, jokingly, "why are YOU single?" And she goes, I shit you not, "I'm not single, my husband is right there" and she pointed to the corner of the bar where some sad guy was standing by himself.

I wonder if there was anything I could have done otherwise like should I have ignored him or asked the girl herself if she wanted me to leave. Thought?

Depends on the interaction. If you had been talking for a while and she was into you, I would have been like "ok, I am going over there, you can join me if you want." If you had only been talking for a little while and you weren't getting IOIs I would have just skeddaled. Either way, its not worth getting into a confrontation over something that stupid.

It's often best to try and friend the other guy(s) in a group early on. If that's not possible or intuitive to the situation (all sitting together but one is obviously not part of a conversation with the rest of the group), I like to put on a friendly face and hold my ground. I'd ask her if the two of them were dating, or I'd calmly ask the guy to calm down and I'd introduce myself cordially. It's unlikely that a fight will happen instantly, there are levels of progression towards physical violence, and they're generally slow enough that a bouncer could break things up before you take a hit, although I understand that hitting on some random girl may not be worth taking a punch over.

When you're chatting someone up, ask them who they're there with and ask them to introduce you to their friends. This prevents situations like this, and helps with logistics if you're trying for a same-night thing.

When a situation like this actually happens, eject however you feel most comfortable. Your physical safety is more important than getting off a cool one-liner or looking tough.

It seems the general consensus is to befriend the guy which I agree with. I usually never do that in a bar setting. No need to show him up. I should just try to make things more fun.

In this situation, you probably just fuck off. Even if you can "beat the amog" it's lower probability than moving on to another set and if you start getting in a pissing match it's unlikely going to improve your standing with the girl. If i wanted to stay in the set I would probably just ignore him or ask the girl I was talking to to come join me for a drink.

Just say sorry and leave. No need to go all alpha. But don't act like a pussy. Genuinely say sorry and leave like it's no big deal. And the guy is not a threat. I've been in situations like that and I usually laugh it away, say sorry or something and leave.

If you really wanted the girl, you should have just turned to him, looked him square in the eye and said, "my apologies, I should have introduced myself. I'm _______, how do you guys know each other?", stuck your hand out for a handshake. It's really hard for the other guy to tell you to fuck off without looking like a douche.

Just laugh, tell him he is a charming young fella, and turn your back to him. The more you can wind him up, the dumber he looks and the better you look. Which country are you in? In the US, fist fights are pretty damned rare.

Best case scenario, he hits you, gets thrown out, and the set is yours.
