My husband has at least a dozen shirts I don't like. He wears them anyway, because I'm not his mother. He will coordinate or dress more seasonally appropriately, if I ask, but I'd never forbid him to wear something. He's never told me he doesn't like an outfit I wear, though I'm sure he has preferences. I don't think he'd speak up unless it was inappropriate in some way. I suppose we do have agreements about semi-permanent and permanent body changes. For instance, I won't cut my hair off if he won't shave his beard. I'd never get a tattoo without discussing it with him. A dress, though? It's a dress. Wear it without comment, no apologies or gloating. Just don't get a tattoo of lemons. He'll deal.

My husband does have clothing he does not like. He isn't a fan of the color green and tends to prefer me in light colors with some type of feminine pattern on it. He just doesn't like green in general it seems though, he owns nothing in green.

I do like how green looks on me personally but I tend to just wear it when I am out without him. I don't think any husband should make a big deal of you owning a single piece they don't like, but there is definitely nothing wrong with you deciding to just not wear it around him.

If you like the dress wear it. This is more of a "him" problem--he should be able to get over a print he doesn't care for if it makes you happy. If you have a good relationship you should be able to laugh together about your "ugly" lemon dress that you love. This is one of those "it's not that deep" moments.

How easy/hard is it to find things you both like?

It's relatively easy for me, so in my position I would return the dress. As much as I might fight it, my husband hating it would have a big negative impact on the joy the dress gives me. If I make a disparaging comment about something he wears, he doesn't really wear it anymore either.

I might feel differently if it was rare for me to find something I loved.

It could go over better to get flashy with sweaters, accessories, purses, hats, scarves, shoes instead of clothing.

I agree with many here. It's one dress. Is the print the only thing he doesn't like? If so, I'd say keep it. And perhaps see if you can style it in different ways, he may end up liking the whole outfit if you pair it with cute shoes or belt or jacket, etc. But is there another reason he might be against it? Like is he uncomfortable with the cut of it?

Again, if it comes down to the print, just keep it. Wear it when you're feeling in a lemony mood. And joke with him about how since he doesn't like it, he can do the honors of taking it off you later. That'll get him to like it, lol.

If this is your biggest problem in life congratulations you don’t have any problems. If you want to keep the dress and wear it when you visit your mom or go out for a spa day with the girls, or something, then do that. Or whenever those were just suggestions. Wear something else on date night.

My further guess is that “hate“ is probably too strong of a word. Most heterosexual men don’t particularly care one way or the other and if you asked him and he gave you his honest opinion, he likely said he just didn’t like it all that much. I doubt “hate” ever crossed his mind. I mean, if he specifically said he hates it, OK, but otherwise, I doubt he cares all that much.

when do I wear it?

Important to ask that prior to buying. I usually never get involved in my wife's purchases. She has great taste and I trust her to spend wisely. My wife is very pragmatic and will buy things she can mix and match to wear at multiple events. A dress with lemons is more of a 'one and done' outfit that might not see much action.

What upsets him? Is it the price? Is the print too bold or too whimsical for his taste? Like you say, it seems like an overreaction to something so harmless. Does he want you to look a certain way?

When my wife and I were travelling through Europe, I saw a simple red sundress hanging on the wall by a cafe. I wanted her to buy it. It didn't appeal to her at first, but she appreciated the big grin on my face when she tried it on. She still wears it at casual events and the story behind it makes us both smile.

I think this is a good opportunity for a discussion, to present your thought process in a small matter like this. Ask if it's okay if you wear the dress when not in his presence. So you respect his taste and he respects yours. That your choice to wear it is not coming from a place of not caring about his opinion, but a spirit of compromise.

Small things might become big things, if not opened properly.

Full text: I bought a new dress that I think is very flattering and pretty. It’s dark blue with a print of lemons and I love the way it fits me, and is very feminine. But it turns out, he hates the lemon print - which is maybe my favorite part!

So my question is - do I keep the dress? And if so, when do I wear it? I don’t want him to think I blatantly don’t care about his preferences, but I also don’t want to give up something that makes me happy and is totally harmless just because it’s not his taste.

I know it’s a pretty trivial thing but I feel like it’s one example of a type of thing I wrestle with often. Would love to know how other women deal with it!

Because he just hates the print, and it's not an objection due to being like too revealing.... I would keep it, but just wear it when not with him... Such as when going to visit family, shopping or lunch with friends.

Return it, buy something else. Why would you want to wear something your husband finds so distasteful? "Just because" to prove you can? What does that accomplish? Surely you can find plenty of cute things you enjoy and he is happy to see you in. It's not like your styles are 180's from one another, or that there's some practical need to wear lemon print.

To avoid this in the future, send him photos next time you shop, or see if he's accurately able to say whether he would or wouldn't like a dress from an online photo. (We couldn't really do the latter because my husband mentally struggles to separate the clothing item from the model when evaluating.)

When you say this is the type of thing you wrestle with, do you mean you generally struggle with desiring to please him in innocent ways? I promise it's very endearing when you demonstrate you care so much about his "small" preferences. Really great girl game technique.
