"A few" isn't technically a lie.

If you have a really high number you can actually tell the truth and she will think you're kidding.

For example you can say in a tongue-in-cheek way "One hundred and seven." If that's your actual number but you say it in a way that sounds like you're clearly trying to get her to buy a lie then she will not take that seriously.

However, you may still be 'getting lucky' instead of actually making them want to have sex with you because if a girl really wants you she'd be very hesitant to ask you a question that might turn you off and if she does get the guts to ask you, a simple, "I don't think that's appropriate" will make her stop dead in her tracks.

I normally say, "I stopped counting at about 20" in a very nonchalant and casual way and that's usually enough for them to go back to "behaving themselves" i.e. not trying to test you (it is a test because if she's hot she's probably fucked more than you).

Don't be reaction seeking - This is something that applies throughout the interaction. You never want to do or say something to get a specific reaction out of a girl.

An easy way to illustrate this is laughing at your own jokes or even looking at her and smiling after you deliver a joke, when you do these things you clearly communicate that you're hoping she laughs too or gets that its supposed to be funny. If your own joke genuinely cracks you up, its ok to laugh at it but don't look at her while doing so, looking away after you deliver a joke will show her that you're simply enjoying yourself and not very concerned about how she reacts to you. Its as if you tell the joke for you and not for her and if she laughs she will acknowledge that its because you're actually a funny guy and not because you were trying hard to get her to laugh. This applies to anything that you can reveal about yourself or anything that could be impressive. Never look for her reaction. So if you tell an interesting story just tell it because you want to, if she asks you what you drive and you drive a Porsche, tell her that but be nonchalant about it and immediately change the topic and get into talking about what she's about.

You want to create a dynamic where she's attracted to you and wants to keep hanging around you while you always do things without seeking a reaction or looking for her approval, that way if she thinks about asking you how many girls you've slept with she'll already expect you to not care about what she thinks of your answer. This dynamic will make her feel like you'll be completely happy whether she sleeps with you or not because you've shown her that you don't care what she thinks of you throughout the whole interaction so she wont feel like she's asking that question from a position of power. If she does ask, she will actually be asking more to find out how meaningful it'd be to you to have sex with her, it'd be actually a way for her to indirectly seek approval from you. And if you give her a high number in response, you won't be turning her off, you will either be putting more pressure on her to perform (in which she will usually try to rise to the challenge) or making her lose some hope of impressing you in the bedroom depending on where her self-esteem is at.

In this situation she'll be the one who will need reassuring, your attitude should almost be like, "There there, its ok. I don't mind if you're not that good at sucking dick."

Stop escalating first - This applies to all escalation. Once I get the first kiss, I'm always the one who pulls away first. I typically don't try to have sex as soon as we're hardcore making out and I try to get the first kiss far from my place. I wouldn't usually make out with a girl in a club but if I'm pulling, I'd either kiss her in the car, on the way to the car, or at some place we stop over at, or if its at a date, I'd kiss her in the date location or in a more private location during the date. This allows me to stop escalating and do other things like maybe talk more or drive. What happens when you do this is that you make her feel again like she's the one getting lucky because you're the one who always backs off first, which will make her feel like she doesn't want to screw it up so it will be very unlikely that she will ask you a question about how many girls you slept with and if she does then a big number will just reinforce the perception that all you're doing is teasing her but you'll be completely fine if you guys don't end up having sex. She might even think that if she doesn't have sex with you, there is another girl who already is waiting to take her place that night.

If you think about it, you escalate, you pull back, you escalate, you pull back, its almost like you'd give her "Blue Ovaries" if you don't actually finish the escalation.

This is kind of a trick question.

This is a question based on insecurity. And if you're getting it, there's really no correct answer. Think about it. Zero is too little. And if they care enough to ask, then anything more than 0 is going to be bad too because it'll conjure up some mysterious person or people that they'll be measuring themselves against.
You think it's "shit test" but really it's them failing to meet your standards. And the funny thing is, you have gotten it into your mind that you are the one who has to pass their test. Fuck their test. You should not try to cater to insecurity. It's never worth it; the price is too much. Even for sex.

So the real "answer" is that you shouldn't have to treat this question seriously. At least not in this situation. People in a relationship might work their way to picking away at each other's histories, but when people are digging into this early on, it's usually insecurity and one or both people looking for reasons for it to fail.

Asking why they want to know is perfectly fine.
Saying that you aren't feeling like going there so soon, is valid. If that means she doesn't want to have sex, then it would have been a terrible idea to go there with her anyway.
Don't ever look at these sorts of questions as if it's only about finding "the right answer" so you get to sex or whatever. Selling out will only get you things that you don't really want in the end.

You're leaving out all the things that are happening on this path, up to that point. And something is definitely going wrong at some point, because you shouldn't have to field this question unless you're taking a wrong turn at some point.

Maybe you're pushing too hard, too fast, lacking finesse, and/or making her feel like you're inexperienced or like she's in a queue and you're sleeping around a lot.
Maybe you're not screening out girls you should and spending time on insecure girls. Or inexperienced girls. Or both.
