The main reason a man bought a house was to provide for his wife and children. Thats been taken away, so there is no reason for a man to buy a home especially in this economy. Many men, not all, feel they are just going to have it taken away from them anyway.

I think she makes some really great points about men vs women in the housing market. As she said, young women are more easily able to move out of their parent’s home but that doesn’t mean they want to support a family and buy the family home. This is consistent with many studies showing women actually out-earn men early in their careers. The wage gap kicks in when women marry, have kids and are able to be supported by a husband. There have been many articles addressing this over the past decade or so.

I think however her future housing prediction is unjustified. The numbers she herself quotes don’t add up to the slump she predicts. Her article also doesn’t consider population growth due to immigration, doesn’t address mortgage rates, doesn’t address construction costs, and doesn’t address the impact of housing codes on housing costs, all huge factors in what housing prices will do.

I’d love to see her write more about how changing gender dynamics play into traditional roles, but honestly I think her economic housing analysis (at least as presented in this article) really sucks.

Many people knew the inflated housing bubble prior to 2008 would burst. The fact she realized that (if she in fact did) doesn’t make her an economic genius, it just means that like most people who know anything about the economy, she recognizes there are cycles including housing market cycles. Claiming someone is a financial genius because they saw the 2008 bubble burst coming is a cliche, overplayed credential.

House prices should drop considerably. They're way too expensive. In my area people making over $100k are opting to continue living with their parents instead of buying a house and I don't blame them.

I've heard some discussion on this and of course it's used as a stepping off point to trash men. People are so out of touch and think that men need to be yelled at until they pull it together but these people have no idea that many men are completely broken or never were able to reach a point of being a healthy fully functioning person. Th only way to fix it(to what extent it can be fixed) is to build men up.

I see no reason to rent a home from the bank and the government for the rest of my life. There isn't a point in it. You'll never own it, and even when you do have the deed, that piece of paper doesn't mean anything when the government can raise your taxes and take it, or if you fall behind on taxes with the IRS they'll take it, or you'll lose it in a divorce, or for it to be taken in imminent domain because a company lobbied for the land. It's just not worth the risk for the lack of a reward because even if you do win despite all odds, you'll still never be able to do all that you want to it due to needing to pull permits for everything like an extension to a porch to just building a shed. Along with the astronomical prices of appliances such as hot water heaters or air conditioning, maintaining a home is an extremely costly expenditure.

Everyone loves to say "You'll make money by being able to sell your house though! You're enriching yourself in the long run!" That's not how that works. I can say my clapped out Ford is worth 300K, that doesn't mean anyone is paying it. Even if I went through everything on it, restored it to factory specifications and ensured there wasn't a single screw or bolt that had not been replaced, it still is not going to sell for anywhere near that price, and that is exactly what is happening with homes. People are lathering paint on mold, and marking up the price by 100K. Homes are nowhere near as valuable as the market has made them out to be, and the high prices are due to the banks owning millions of vacant homes, artificially creating a scarcity. The entire system is broke.

Personally, I'm going to live on the road. Cheaper in the long run, and there's more to experience.
