The problem is “toxic masculinity” referred specifically to traditionally and/or historically “masculine” traits which, particularly in modern western society, do quite literally nothing but harm others and self harm for men. This would be in reference to things like extreme anger reactions, or sexist attitudes, etc.

It’s just that “toxic masculinity” was probably the worst phrase they could come up with for it. And when the right wingers and the actual man hating left hijacked the term, no one did anything whatsoever to meaningfully correct it. So stupid

I had a similar argument in another forum recently, regarding the American Psychological Association’s 2019 declaration that traditional masculinity is by its nature inherently “toxic“.

My argument is, accordingly, that the mental health profession has little to nothing of value to offer men in terms of therapeutic treatment of mental disorders (beyond of course handing out psychoactive pills), and it is no wonder that men are looking elsewhere, e.g. alt-right influencers, for guidance on how to navigate the world.

No one individual man made the world way it is, and declaring someone “toxic“ for having been born with a Y chromosome, is no way to start an exchange, let alone convince someone that you’re trying to help them

want to post about this sort of thing more and also another thing i hate circumcision but i have not had a easy attempt at getting much of my stuff accepted but i think part of the problem with the concept of toxic masculinity and masculinity in general is you can debate what it is but really a significant part of it is being hyper competitive and that sort of thing and if you take that part out of it as bad as it might what you are left with is slavery because you really just have good obedient workers and that is really what they expect and want but i oppose both gender roles and toxic masculinity and i support androgyny in large part because of that reason or basically actually having a sort of freedom because i think the freedom to choose gender expression and even roles is very omportant especially for males who have had the most demanding role.

My main gripe with the discourse around toxic masculinity is that Feminists never call out other Feminists for misandry.

Some Feminists have a definition of toxic masculinity that I very much agree with: It's the part of the male gender role that's toxic. The ways in which we raise and gender police men that make men miserable and make them hurt themselves and the people around them. I have a lot of problems with the societal role men are forced into. So calling out bad parts is very much in line with my values.

But then there are the misandrist hate group Feminists. These assholes have zero political principles in common with the above Feminists, their principles are quite close to literal Nazis when it comes to men. Instead of understanding how gender roles and other societal expectations shape us, they claim that men by their very existence are oppressors and propagate patriarchy. It's apparently in their blood. This kind of gender essentialism is what makes me compare them to Nazis, and it's utterly incompatible with Feminist discourse on any other topic. It's also objectively wrong. There is zero research saying women propagate gender roles to a lesser degree than men. If anything, women are more involved in drilling gender roles into kids because they statistically raise them.

Now the big gripe is that group 1 is utterly blind to the misandry of group 2. It's like Westworld's "that doesn't look like anything to me".

So when you talk about the misandry of group 2, such as them using toxic masculity in a gender-essentialist way, they'll tell you "no, you misunderstand, toxic masculinity means [group 1's definition]". While group 2 screams and sometimes legislates their hatespeech at you. That leads, at best, to a motte-and-bailey type argument where you have to prove to them that group 2 exists, and at worst they gaslight you into thinking you're the one misunderstanding.

The only way to fix this is that "good Feminists" need to start acknowledging Misandry. They need to apply their principles on gender issues consistently to men instead of trying to ally with the hategroup Feminists that they have no politics in common with.

I'm more concerned how a bunch of people of the opposite gender can protest for decades about others meddling in their business can come around and argue how men have to behave. Either, we all get to say about everything, or nobody gets to meddle in anyone's business. Just shut up already.
Men having a conscience and control over their own body is the cornerstone of the patriarchy. If men don't behave in a way that they benefit, it's toxic. Else, it's positive.

I think masculinity is made up and not really a part of men.

I am 24 male and never feel connected to masculinity ideals. I feel my male friends as toxic. Now I have no friends.

I try to mask my hate for my male friends to not be lonely and they come to play video games with me. But I just cannot like masculinity.

Although I am not even sure what that means but probably aggression, nationalism, perversion, and enforcing male gender roles like earn money for a woman and became a father. Idk how it is defined in West. I am not from there.
