Yep. I’m engaged to my bff. We’ve known each other since we were 13. We’re 40 now.

Tho I should point out that 1.) we’re both queer, so one of the reasons we didn’t date sooner was because at that age, neither of us knew what “queer” was. We had always had crushes on each other, tho. We just didn’t know what to do about it.

And 2.) we didn’t date until we were in our 30’s because we both had a lot of work to do to be worthy of each other first.

No. I actually have thought that in some ways I would want my future love interest to have similar qualities, but my best friend has a snoring problem and is too stubborn to sort it out, whether for love or money, despite several possible solutions being entirely free. I don’t need that kind of obstinacy and lack of self-care sensibilities in a life-partner

I love her, but we have different life goals, different beliefs, different wants. And living with her would be so annoying I'd break up within a week.

For one she doesn't want children and I want one. Immediate deal breaker.

I also don't like her parents. That's not a problem in our friendship because I never have to see her parents. I've seen them in person 4 times in 8 years. But once you're in a relationship that's serious enough that's family dinners and Christmas and birthdays....

I'd leave over the father alone.

For another she's got her set routine that she doesn't like being disrupted and she can sometimes be bit judgemental of people who are not like her. Again, fine in a friend not in a partner for me personally.

She's funny and she's sweet. And spending time with her is fun. But that time is limited to 3 times a week maximum.

But I need someone flexible, who's family I can sit down at the kitchen table with, who is a good communicator, and who I can raise a child with.

Dating would be the last thing on my mind but it would be in my mind.

But Firstly, we will do a prank on our mutually common friend from our friend group.

Secondly, she can now try dating a lesbian, cuz it would certainly be an interesting dynamic.

Later on, she could help me land a date with help of her new found girl-friend group.

No, I wouldn't. Because we have too different lifestyles and future goals. My bestie loves travel, adventure, and being spontaneous, while I'm more of a "home body" who craves consistency and familiarity above all else. I feel easily uprooted and unstable when things change a lot, while she instead gets easily bored and frustrated if things remain the same a lot. Even with super simple things like what to eat, what movies to watch, what music to listen to.

But even more importantly, we wouldn't be able to even agree on a place, even which country, to live. That would be a disaster in a relationship, but as friends, we can live in different countries and meet up for a few weeks once a year. She can travel with her other friends, while I focus on building routines and comfort zones in my own home area, and then we compromize on those few weeks a year we spend time together.

Also we have different political views, me being more conservative, she being more liberal, although we're both relatively close to the center, neither of us is really an extremist in either direction. Like she's center left and I'm center right. So while we can sorta generally agree on some core principles, we can't actually have any honest, deep discussions about politics without lashing out on each other.

Again, this is fine for me in a friendship, because we don't have to talk in depth about that stuff to get along, but in a relationship you kinda need for your partner to be on the same page about bodily autonomy, views on gender, and stuff like that. Not that I'd need a guy to have the exact same opinions as me, but I'd prefer if we were least in the same general block. Like for ex my bestie is pro-choice and I'm pro-life, this wouldn't work in a relationship that includes sex and potential pregnancy. But since we're just friends, we don't have to be that invested in how the other makes choices around pregnancy and sex.

There are other details about my bestie I wouldn't get along well with in an actual relationship, like communication styles, love languages, etc, as well, but that aren't as deeply important for a friendship. Because I can take more distance in a friendship, even with someone I'd call my best friend. Because there's still a huge difference between a close friend and someone you live with and basically go on the same life path with. You can live very different lives than a friend, but you really can't do that with a husband or wife, or even a serious boyfriend/girlfriend.

That said, despite being straight, I actually have dated my best friend. Years ago when I was very confused about my sexuality, due to trauma and stuff I hadn't dealt with yet. So I actually already have experience with what dating my bestie was like, vs just being friends. And yeah the dating thing obviously didn't work mainly because of my sexuality, but there were so many other issues that it still wouldn't have worked even if she had been male, or if I had been bisexual for real. There are more incompatibilities between us, in just our personalities and values.
