I have a degree, undergraduate and graduate -- majored in physics. I got them at a time of my life when I was full-on feminist, but I don't regret them at all. Now, they mean that I can work a well-paid job that eases our financial situation, and lets us have the things we want.

I didn't meet my husband in, or anywhere near college (in fact I met him almost a full decade after I graduated), and in his opinion, an educated woman was the most important thing for him. Not just due to earning potential, but because an educated wife made for an educated mother, which would make for educated children, able to do well for themselves.

Yep. I studied applied math as an undergraduate and am in grad school for the next year or so for computer science.

IMHO there's no correct answer for whether you should pursue a college degree or not. Here are three factors to consider (there are obviously many more):

What type of guy do you like? At your presumably young age, you are probably capable of attracting the type of guy you like, within reason. Is your type typically found in places where college students or graduates should be? If so, college could be worthwhile. Opposite if you're like /u/danabanana9 and don't enjoy the intellectual types. :)
What would your degree be in? If you go to college, you want to major in something that will provide value to you/your future partner. Be pragmatic. If this isn't an option, don't bother.
How liable are you to slut it up in college?

I think on this subreddit, you'll find that the general wisdom is that at your age, a major focus should be on attracting/keeping a quality mate. From that perspective, getting/ignoring a college degree is just another factor you can use to optimize your chances. And yes, there are obviously other (greener) reasons for choosing to go to college, but hey, this ain't r/leanin. :P

I have a degree. I used it for 5 years and now stay home. Though I couldn't admit it to myself at the time, one of the big reasons I went to college was for my MRS. I got it and it is far more important than my degree.

I have a bachelor's degree in legal studies and I work full-time as a paralegal. Now I understand this is somewhat of an unpopular opinion here, but I take pride in the fact that I have the ability to be self-sufficient should tragedy strike somewhere down the line. My financial independence was also one of my features which my fiance was attracted to.

Originally, I obtained the bachelors degree with designs of law school in my future. I was going to be a big, powerful woman who didn't need no man, etc., etc. But then I met my fiance, and I realize now that those plans don't fit into my ideal future at all. I hope to be a SAHM down the line and devote my energy to taking the best possible care of my family.

I have a degree, and although I don't use it directly for my business - finishing school was still a great experience. Going to (and graduating from) college is expected, encouraged, and practically mandatory in my family.

If you decide against going to a four year school, get trained in a specialized area over the course of two years. I think education is important for more than simply getting a job after you graduate. Learning is a life-long process, and going to college is a unique experience. You don't have to drink, have random sex, or go to loud house parties in order to have a fulfilling experience. Making new friends your age and being social is incredibly easy because a lot of people live on or just off campus. Making plans and finding free things to do is a snap. Never again will you have so many friends centrally located, with a lot of flexibility in terms of when they can hang out. I was a college athlete, and even with my extremely busy schedule, socializing with my non-athletic friends all that hard.

Edited to add: Finances play a huge role. I accumulated no debt thanks to my scholarship, but I have seen friends struggle because of their loan payments. It's a debt they will be living with for the next decade (if not longer). Be sure to take advantage of grants and scholarships available to you. There are so many opportunities to get financial aid that simply go unused. Yes, you may have to write an essay and do a bit of leg-work to figure out what's options exist - but it's worth the effort.

No degree, but went to trade school. Allowed me to incur zero debt and made quite a bit of money immediately after graduating. I loved the field, but can't do it anymore thanks to health problems. I still think it's one of the best decisions I ever made, though. I was done in one year and able to support my husband and I while he worked part time and went to school.

I have a degree, the subject matter did little for my career, but the networking done at college was really valuable. I don't think degrees are inherently useless or bad, because a lot of jobs require a college degree and in this economy it's really hard for a woman to not work. Trust me, if I had that option it would be awesome, I could just do my creative projects, take care of the house, cook and do yoga. But that's not in the cards for me.

Getting my BA in Psychology within the next couple of years. I'm still trying to decide whether or not I want to stick with Psychology to get a PhD/PsyD or switch gears and do something like an MBA instead.

I've got a radiation therapist degree. Awesome job, pays well in new Zealand. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone starting out now though the job market is completely saturated new graduates can't get jobs in many countries

I have a bachelors of science in human services and I'm currently getting my masters in social work, I'll graduate in May whoot whoot! :) I am really proud of my profession and I have a passion for what I do. Fortunately, I do not have any student loans from my undergrad degree, just my graduate degree.

I hated my undergrad experience, I didn't like to party or do any of the "typical" college experiences, I never really felt like I fit in. My graduate experience has been much better, mostly because I have a great man who is also in school and we support each other.

I would say the the number one thing to think about when pursuing a degree is to think long term. I chose social work because I love it, but also because there are so many different things I can do with it. My plan is to work full time, until we have kids and then, I plan on going into private practice, so I can make my own hours, or working part time. My SO and I have discussed and agreed on this, if its possible.

I would say to think long term, do whats best for your relationship and ignore the criticism, because, OH MY LORD, there is always someone who has something to say about your choices.

I'm pursuing one right now, child development/early childhood education. Just an associates for now, not sure if I'm going to do full bachelors yet. I like that it gives me options for how I want to work: full time or part, if I keep working I could have my children there with me, I could run a home daycare, I could stop working and it wouldn't really be frowned upon. Plus I love it :)

I have a bachelor's in psych and am currently getting my master's in public health. I chose psych because I came out of undergrad with a bachelor's of science, but it was easy (had a high GPA) and I finished a year early. I chose public health because hospitals always need administrators and the field doesn't change; so I can have and raise kids, then go back to work when they're in high school or college. Both rounds of my schooling are fully paid for by my amazing dad. (Side note: I took out loans for undergrad that he immediately paid off when I graduated. Grad school, he's paying for outright because I've shown that I'm committed to my schooling.)

You really need to evaluate. Can you find a good man without going to college in your area? How much is your ideal job in demand? Do you want kids? How much upkeep does your ideal job require (I.e. will you need to constantly go back to school or take classes)? How much does your ideal job pay? How high will you debt be? It's very situational.

I have a high school diploma and some college education--but no degrees. I don't need a degree for doing work in the field that I'm in right now (I'm a receptionist for a doctor); and in a couple of years, I'll be a stay-at-home-mom, so I don't see the point in pursuing one at this time.

I'll complete a Bachelor of Business Administration in December. I have no student debt because I have worked the whole way through my degree.

The lifestyle that my husband wants for us requires us both to work at this time and me having a degree means I can work smarter, not harder. He wants to own a vacation property and nice vehicles and have the ability to travel a lot later on in life and that is very hard to do with only one income.

I am currently working towards a bachelor'a degree in special education! I was lucky to go to a high school that encourage it's students to pursue career paths and was able to "student teach" in different classrooms for 5 years! After all that, I've decided that children ages 3-10 with severe disabilities is where my passion lies and am actively working towards a degree so I can work with my littles. I met my boyfriend at college and, while he currently does not attend college (works in the oil field), he understands my love and passion towards them. We've discussed how, when that time comes, I would prefer to be a stay at home mom until the child reaches school age and then I would go back to work at my elementary school. The children I work with are such a huge part of my life that I honestly at times feel like they are my children. I love seeing them grow and learn!

My fine arts degree is an extremely valuable commodity; it has netted me exactly zero jobs! College was a ton of fun and I partied my ass off while there. So fun! I also met my husband there as soon as I arrived (I worked in Geophysics for 3 years before going to school), so it was all worth it.

Luckily I quickly decided to pursue a career in accounting back when you didn't need a masters to get your CPA, worked my way up a public accounting firm, got a lucrative job as Controller of a large company, which is now a nice small company, and I'm near retirement.

You can't do that now, but back when a specific degree wasn't mandatory for every job, and experience was prized, you could pretty write your own ticket with what smarts you have. Either that or the interviewers thought that the A in BFA meant accounting, LOL!

Note: I went to college back when a job delivering pizza would pay for books and tuition, so I didn't incur any debt. Going to college to party while incurring debt or blowing your parents savings is very irresponsible!

I attended university... but didn't graduate. I was smart, and worked hard, but I switched majors and never finished, though I didn't come out with debt. I personally regret this, but it did not effect where I was going career wise. I was offered positions that required a degree. (Glorified administrator)

I made a major switch last year and am just about to complete the first year of a two year program which puts me into the (paid) third year of a four year Red Seal trade in a STEM field. (Mouthful!) Not a university degree but shows commitment, won't run me (too far) into debt, pays very very well, and I can work wherever in the world my SO and I choose to go. A huge improvement over the generic replaceable job I had before. Think outside of the normative useless 4 year bachelor!

Yes, and in large part, I think it was a mistake. My Psychology degree is largely used as a placeholder - people want to see that I have a degree for a job? Here it is. But it's unlikely to ever get used for a psychology job unless I go back to school for an MA, which I cannot afford and don't think would be a good use of my time and energy anyway at this point.

If I could go back in time I'd go for pharmacy. I wish every day that I had done exactly that. (It's honestly closer to my interests, but I didn't even know it existed until I was a senior.)

If I hadn't met my husband there, it would have been a total waste of time.

I have a Master's degree in secondary English education, but I'm also a SAHM.

I always knew that I wanted to stay home with my kids, which is a value I share with DH. That being said, I don't think DH would have been interested in me if I wasn't a college graduate. This may not be the case for everyone, but for me, having a degree raises my value.

I don't work outside of the home, but my college degree -- or more precisely, my college education -- makes DH and me more compatible. He considers me more of an intellectual equal and enjoys our time together more. Yes, he wanted a wife and mother, but he also was looking for someone mentally stimulating. Truth is, the "real" college experience (not the carousel) is a crucible that can refine a girl into a woman. This is particularly true in my situation in which my husband grew up in a higher socio-economic strata than did I. I believe my education makes me more comfortable in "his world" than I would have been otherwise.

That being said, my number one counsel for women who ultimately want to raise a family is to go ahead and better yourself through higher education (whether that be traditional college or otherwise) but don't take out loans or carry student debt!! Call it looking for your M.r.s. or raising your value, or whatever you like, but figure that you won't be in the working world long enough to pay off your loans! If you're going to get an education be smart enough to make it a good value.

Wtf is with all these women here majoring in technical subjects? Because academia is left wing and seeks to put women into male dominated fields, you most likely benefited from affirmative action to get into those programs in the first place. You belong in the kitchen cooking and taking care of your man's kids. I sure as hell don't want a woman with MDs/JDs/PhDs and/or making more money than me. And why are you spending the most fertile years of your lives getting degrees when you should be bearing children? Doesn't sound very "Red Pill Woman" to me.
