What is the proper way to pick out an engagement ring?

My boyfriend and I have been dating about nine months, and we've talked about getting married, being together forever, all the nice things. We're both 35 (none of us have kids), and he does very, very well for himself. He will be an amazing provider, and father one day. I've been lurking in this community for a few months now and while I don't align myself 100% with RPW, I am slowly adopting some of the lifestyle ideas.

We texted about it last night (we're in different cities till I join him in Dallas in November) but have both lived in Nashville our whole entire relationship. I mentioned why he's never asked what kind of ring I wanted, and he said, "I've never really thought about it," and basically doesn't understand why it's so important. So I just explained how I want something that I'll love to wear forever. I always thought I was low key, but I want something that will "WOW" people. I want everyone to know that I'm married to him, and not mistake it for a less significant type of jewelry.

Do I text pictures? Go to a store together? I want to give him ideas, but let him pick it out, and I feel like that will be more special. I'm thinking rose gold with a large solitaire, antique setting or maybe a classic setting. I've picked out three pictures to send him. I'm ready to give him ideas to think about. He's a nerd, but is very well dressed (only wears Brooks Brothers), and I just want something that is super high quality, but how do I give him this idea without seeming like I want the best ring out there. I just want the best ring for me, and don't feel like expense should be spared, especially since money isn't an issue. I feel like the ring should match the high quality couple that we are together.

How did you and your husband bring up, and pick out your engagement ring?
