I used to know a girl who worked in the makeup department of a department store. It was quite an educational experience.

Yes. There's a common trope that guys can't tell if a woman is wearing makeup or not, and what they usually mistake for no makeup is "natural looking" or "subtle" makeup.

Here's the thing with that, most men have wives/girlfriends that they see sans makeup all the time. My own girlfriend very rarely wears makeup (despite being a trained makeup artist) and she's absolutely stunning with or without it. I'd say she wears makeup about 5-6 times a year.

Maybe incels are mistaking photoshopped girls with makeup on for natural beauty but I don't think the average guy is lying when he says women look fine without makeup.

Most guys don't obsess over makeup. The current "in" look for female fashion is heavy and obvious makeup with artificial eyebrows and colored layers. When guys say they don't like makeup what they mean is they don't like the artificial aesthetic.

I work in film and I've dealt with a lot of hair and makeup people. I know how to pay attention and I can say in most cases makeup won't make you look better, just different. There's a lot of women running around trying to contour on radically different eyes, noses, and mouths and uncomfortable with their own appearance. There's also a lot of women trying to cover up acne with makeup, with the acne itself being caused by makeup and just getting worse.

Light makeup can help, I won't lie. But there are women who insist on wearing a full face and bright nail polish even when they're spending all day or even all week doing grimy, physical labor.

For the most part yes, though even as a woman I can think of a few instances where I’ve seen a woman whose skin looked so flawless that I thought she had to be wearing makeup but it looked so natural I couldn’t tell for sure. I wish I could perfect that skill.

Men who have had LTRs with women can tell. Others, probably not.

Idk what your threshold for 'drastically change appearance' is, but makeup is often the difference between "she's hot" and "she's ugly", so yeah it can make a pretty big difference.

It's just one of those weird virtue signalling things. Like women who say they like guys with a kind personality or whatever the fuck.

Like objectively yeah, a woman who looks good without makeup is better than the opposite, but most men aren't weighing shit like that in the moment. They just go for whoever looks better when they see her.

When women complain that men are contradictory because they say they don't like make up, but dont like her face without it, the problem isn't men, it's her face.

Make-up is still a marker saying: I want to attract. Women who appear more open and acceptable are more attractive.

Make-up is still a marker saying "I take care of my looks" which is a good thing to signal.

Subtle make-up is mostly about fixing skin imperfections, it is harder for men to notice or to fund it unnatural, yes.

Some women have bad make-up skill and make thelselves uglier, that's also true. But majority of the time, women who are neaityfull or ugly stay beautiful or ugly with makeup.

Oh I think they can tell alright. They know the makeup is not her actual skin surface. They just fucking hate it because they'd rather know what is under the makeup. They want to be able to assess both a woman's SMV and RMV fully and accurately at first glance without putting any work in or spending any time. Plain old male sense of entitlement. If she's all blotchy under the makeup it really doesn't affect her casual SMV unless you are one of those crazies who really likes to fuck in the shower, and as for RMV well it isn't like we make guys walk round with a copy of their last payslip stapled to their forehead, thems the breaks you gotta wait for some sorts of info, suck it up and deal.

Just look at ppd men who give examples of post wall celebrities and calling them "beautiful". They are delusional and oblivious that it is all make up and plastic surgery. So yeah most men either can't tell or are delusional (willfully) of how much make up change the face of a woman.

You can tell when an individual isn't wearing makeup or at least didn't apply it well.

If applied well there is no way to tell the difference between naturally perfect skin and artificially achieved.

Just like you can tell when an individual clearly didn't laser their skin to have no hair growth but but good lasering is indistinguishable from just having no hair growth there naturally.

Has nothing to do with "guys telling" and "makeup on a girl"; makeup doesn't care about the sex of the skin it's on.

Guys in ltrs who see their partners with and without makeup frequently may be able to tell, but ime it takes a while and most guys aren’t paying enough attention to notice. My ex would only be like “hey, you’re wearing makeup! :D” when I was wearing really obvious lipstick or eyeliner lol

I think many guys just do not care. Yes, they do not. For me personally I can tell if a girl/woman has make-up on. I do not dislike or discriminate against anyone, but I hate it when girls just put masses on their faces or I even witnessed a girl that hat her neck and ears covered in a big layer of foundation and whatsoever. I do like it decent. A decent addition to highlight specific face parts. And to all girls out there: Please do not put a ton of makeup on your face, if your hiding something you are indeed making it worse.

I think when guys say that they want a naturally pretty girl what they mean is that they want a young girl who still has that popping fresh youthful glow. I don't mind makeup on my old haggard post wall thirty year old wife in fact I prefer makeup. I also like makeup on younger girls and yeah I can tell when a girl has makeup on. I'm pretty sure guys just mean that they prefer young girls because even though you sweety pies try your best to look young there's just no faking the glow of youth.

I think they mostly can't tell unless they've learned from watching their girlfriends or sisters put different types of makeup on. Especially the subtle improvements in a woman's appearance like evening out your skin tone, making your lips slightly redder and wearing mascara and a bit of brow product.

Of course not, even naturally beautiful women who are in peak health barely look as good as women on social media, billboards, tv etc. who have full makeup on and even plastic surgery. My friends who are working models or non-model genetically gifted women all wear makeup every single day. How could average women with no makeup catch men's eyes?

I am a little annoyed by that almost "copy/paste" reply you always see on reddit where a girl explains to guys that the natural look is really full on make up, as if no woman ever can really be seen without it. It sounds really jealous.

It is definitely possible that someone is using very little make up which goes unnoticed, but I think everyone can tell most make up applications unless it's a photo.

What's annoying is that both these side act like it's either/or - women either walk around with full on make up every day, even when they look 100% makeup-less, or they hate it and would never use it which shows how virtuous they are. Most women will throughout the week vary (and be seen in public) in different stages from no make up, to minimal make up, to make up for an occasion.

Exactly - it might work on screen or on a photo, but the face-changing-fake shadows look would be blatantly obvious to anyone standing next to the girl. But then so many girls on reddit act like they really do this, and daily, which is just weird. I tend to believe the claim that you can look better without make-up, unless you have bad skin tone.

I cant lmao. I told my wife about one of her friends “I think shes wearing make up or something.”

Wife explained that every female in the room (except her as usual) was wearing make up. And that i only noticed this one friend because she has a hideous, uncanny-valley amount of make up on. This girl had intense insecurity about her skin and was infamous in the girlfriend circle for wearing a truly absurd caked on amount to where there was no hint of her original face.

I was like oh.
