Songs about women wanting/needing men have existed as long as music has and are not going anywhere. I'm as ~independent woman~ as they come, but Jolene is my actual go-to karaoke song. A banger is a banger.

Miley Cyrus covered this song a few years ago and it was a viral hit. And basically any popular female country singer in the last 20 years (probably more like 40) has covered Jolene at some point.

Taylor Swift has become the biggest popstar on the planet singing similar songs.

Little Big Town has a song called "Girl Crush" with very similar themes to Jolene, wherein the narrator is obsessed with the object of her affection's lover ("I want her long blonde hair, I want her magic touch, 'cause maybe then you'd want me just as much").

Ariana Grande has a song on her new album literally named after her fiancee.

Beyonce sang about "Becky with the good hair" on Lemonade in 2016.

Literally there are so many songs by female artists about men, loving men, losing men, missing the men you lost, hating the bitch that took your man, and yes there is the occasional "men ain't shit" song but if that's all you're seeing you've got some confirmation bias going on.

I've seen modern interpretations of that song as being about sublimated lesbianism, so.

Also, "Before He Cheats" was really popular very recently, and that's a WAY sketchier song than "Jolene." There was also the whole "Lemonade/Becky With the Good Hair" thing.

What's so problematic about it? It's a unique perspective on asking another woman to help her keep her man, rather than compete with her. I always got a sisterhood vibe from it.

Didn’t Miley Cyrus cover Jolene a few years ago? The White Stripes also have a cover a few years before that. Lots of bands have, it’s a classic. I think the song still resonates with people, it’s a sad, honest song that people can relate to.

To be honest I never understood the "stole my man/woman", boyfriend, girlfriend, whatever, mentality. We're talking about a person, not a bike or an iPhone. If they left you for someone else, it's because they chose to, not because that person cast a spell or physically kidnapped then or something. That'd be a different issue...

I do not think it would be popular today. Because the singer would be told to let the guy go and find a man who wants to be with her and let Jolene have him.

Jolene would not be called out because being a home wrecker is a viable choice for many of today's women. So Jolene would just take what she wanted and leave the singer in distress because Jolene's wants takes precedence over concern for the partnered woman she is hurting.

Idk you could ask someone who listens to country music to see if that’s still a theme in it. I remember when that shania Twain album came out that had a more “go women!” theme. But that shit was big in the 90s.

I understand where you're coming from. I think 'Stand by Your Man' is a better example. I remember Hilary Clinton making some comments about that song:

“You know, I’m not sitting here, some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette".

I personally think that song has a nice sentiment, but it seems to belong in a simpler time, and those values do seem to have dissipated to a great extent.

I think admitting you "need a man" is considered retrograde. In the current social climate, a woman admitting she needs a man is not held on the same high pedestal and ideal as the "strong, independent, don't need no man" type.
