Prolog: Feminist moderator Cuittler deleted this. She said it should be a CMV, but failed to cite the relevant rule. If there is a rule that requires this thread to be CMV, someone please PM me.

The biggest problem with it stems from the name. In English grammar, structuring the name for a concept as "noun + noun" has very important connotations.

Examples:

"Straw man" What is a man? A creature that can think, speak intelligently, do work, make love etc. What is straw? It's dead plant matter that can do none of those things.

By putting the noun "straw" in front of the noun "man", you massively modify the normal meaning of the second noun.

All the usual qualities of the second noun are devastated and altered by the first. The first noun is the important one

So, now let's look at how it affects things when it's "noun + culture".

"Honor culture involves a collectivist society where there are expectations and pressure to put the interests of the family, relatives or an even larger collective before that of the individual. Individuals may be forced to relinquish their basic human rights. Those who do not conform may be forced, persecuted or pressured into conformance. Transgressors are punished physically or psychologically by relatives.

In an honor culture offspring are not free to choose a partner for themselves but may instead be expected to enter into an arranged marriage or if the offspring resists, into a forced marriage or child marriage"

The same pattern appears. The neutral word "culture" is massively modified to something vastly different to what is usually meant. Usually English-speaking people aren't talking about something so horrible when we use the word "culture", but the fact of putting "honor" before "culture" means that everything within that culture is suffused with strong connotations of honor.

People in an honor culture are obsessed with honor in ways that just don't register with people from other cultures. They're like a different species, seemingly. Honor permeates and distorts absolutely everything. You're only free from the demands of honor if you're sleeping, in an honor culture.

Just like a straw man is no man at all, except maybe for a slight similarity in shape. The addition of the word "straw" changes virtually everything important about the "man".

So, I'm trying to establish a pattern here, and I hope you see it. In the English language, when you have "noun + noun" the first noun completely infuses and dominates the second noun.

In the "Honor culture" example, honor is something that dominates every person's life for every waking moment. Regular people are willing to kill or commit suicide at a moment's notice if honor is at stake. If your child does something that brings dishonor, that's all she wrote: that child is dead to you. The love that mammals have for their kids is fully negated by honor. There is never a time when honor isn't a major issue.

So that's what is so evil and dishonest about the name of the phrase "rape culture".

"Rape culture is a sociological concept used to describe a setting in which rape is pervasive and normalized due to societal attitudes about gender and sexuality."

On extremely rare occasions, during extremely extensive military conflicts, there are brief periods where rape is pervasive and normal. The invasion of Berlin by the Red Army is the last example of such a period in the West. And you'll notice the perps were not Western.

Outside periods of extreme military conflict, this literally never happens. There are extremely crime-ridden neighborhoods in cities around the world where rape happens a lot. But literally all of those places are de facto war zones, where armed criminal gangs rule the streets and the state doesn't enforce control consistently.

Anywhere in the world where the state is in control of the streets, rape is always the exception, not the rule. For the vast majority of women, they go from year to year never thinking or worrying about rape. When a rape occurs, it is a shock and surprise to everyone.

The word "rape culture", any time it is applied to a region which is not in the grip of an extremely bloody armed conflict, is always a lie. Because in peacetime, rape is never pervasive and never normal.

Epilog: Sweet mother of Farts, but this is a bad comment: "Rape culture is People shrugging when a man or women’s ass is grabbed."

Wait, you want us to never shrug when anybody grabs an ass anywhere?

Can you live like that for a week? Ten hours a day, I will read you accurate true reports of random crimes that are done to people, proportionate to prevalence in gender. Most of the stories will be assaults on men. You won't know any of those people.

Ten hours a day, you have to display deep, true, unforced, completely natural empathy for the suffering. It has to be specific to the person who suffered, and it has to come from the heart. We'll do twelve to the hour: one minute where I give you a short bio of the victim, his hopes and aspirations. Then a minute of the violence he suffered and how it closed off all his cherished dreams of sporting greatness.

Then you give me three minutes of spontaneous, honest empathetic outpouring of how deeply his story has touched your soul and the victim will always be a part of you.

And then we move on to the next one.

I bet you're not as truly empathetic after two or three days of that. On the fourth day, you won't give a rat's ass about any victims.

And then you'll realize why we ALL shrug when we hear someone we never cared about had something bad happen to him.
