I love Dr. Jordan Peterson, and i've surely learned some things from him. But i do not agree with the idea that kids are a source of happiness. At least in the case of north america there's a well documented sociological phenomenon named "Parenting happiness gap" where it has been found that parents are actually less happy. I have no idea why Dr. Peterson does not address this critique.

Can you summarize his arguments? I disagree that family is end all, be all of happiness but I don't want to watch the video.

Well, he's well spoken, I'll give him that. A lot of what he said isn't true though. Lower income people aren't having big, lavish weddings, but that doesn't mean they aren't getting married. Being married is a tax break, it's worth doing if you're in it for the long haul. I know lots of couples who had a courthouse ceremony to get the benefits then had the big party later when they could afford it. As well as couples who are happily unmarried because that's what they want.

I think it's interesting that this video is being labeled as a rant about women. To me it reads more like stream of consciousness musings about where our society is going in general. He's right that huge amounts of wealth in this world are controlled by a small number of absolutely insane men. I'm more interested in figuring out what we're going to do about that as a society, in my opinion it's unsustainable.

Omg, the comments. What a bunch of worthless idiots. The way they pile onto the few women willing to have a say there, they're really showcasing their ignorance and idiocy.

This that Jordan Peterson said was true: "To the degree rights are extended to women economic prosperity follows" - although I don't think he realises that rights were accidentally extended to women in Western Europe a long time before they were intentionally extended. Over centuries, women engaged in paid work up to their early to mid twenties (due to poverty) and then married. That was one of the causes of rising prosperity in Western Europe (and in every country that the English colonised/invaded).

But... he's wrong on quite a few counts.

He says women marry men who are 4-5 years older. No, over 50% marry men within 3 years of their own age. Only 13% marry men 4-5 years older.

He says once you reach a comfortable level of income, you don't need or care about extra income - which is why he says female lawyers who marry men on their same or better income level drop out of the profession. Nope. He seems to think it's all about money for women. For some it is. For many, it isn't. Sorry, Mr Peterson, but as a female entrepreneur, I know dozens of other female entrepreneurs. Almost all of us have kids and almost all of us work damned hard around the clock - and although we rake in very high incomes, there isn't a level at which we stop and say "oh, we have enough". Because it's the work that is exhilarating and also if it's you making the money, you can choose where it goes. If you want to donate to charity you can choose your own charity and who you help. And you can keep building your business.

It is true that women seek better work/life balance than men do in general. And that is a good thing - which will end up in making a better workplace for everyone. How many kids had to grow up never seeing their 80-hour-a-week fathers? Also, women who want to have kids cannot easily continue working 80 hour work weeks.

He doesn't understand women. They weren't happier in the 50s and 60s. If they were, sales of anti-depressants wouldn't have been sky high. He doesn't seem to realise that many women back then wanted to engage in paid work, but had to step out of the workforce to give jobs to men at that time. Women surged out to work once the pill came along in the 60s. Because they wanted to.

Mr Peterson is wrong in saying that the pill messed things up for women - although he tries to correct himself, it's abundantly clear what he really thinks.

Studies saying women were happier are bogus. And seeing as their children were committing crime at a much higher rate than now, how happy could those households really have been? (High crime rate right up the early 90s, then a sharp drop).

What he says about those high paid jobs is very true. The way everyone has this idea of fancy cigar smoking millionaires hanging out as he put it is indeed very amusing when the fact is they do work insane hours for their money. He is 100% correct in that sense.

I'm not sure I'd agree it's only men who can hack this as he implies though, and I think people overstate how difficult it is to balance work and family life. My mum rose up to one of those jobs and yeah she worked fucking hard but she always had time for the family too. Often worked out of the office whenever she could to spend more time at home even.

I also disagree that having kids is the key to happiness for the reasons /u/RedPillDetox said. If anything parents are less likely to be happy. Which makes sense when you consider the work that actually goes into raising and paying for one of those things.

I'm also not sure exactly on what basis he makes the argument that less marriage = more miserable women. He just kinda threw that out there with no supporting argument.

I don't really see the point of his arguments. Everyone in high effort, high responsibility jobs, save for the lunatics, likely have a lot of strife in their lives. Ultimately, society tells men it isn't ok to back down and women that it's fine to. So that's how things tend to fall.

On a side note, I don't like his portrayal of those high effort jobs. He frames it like you, as one person, are managing hundreds of cases and managing countless people when those jobs are done, in total, by dozens of not hundreds of people within an organization. And if you're a good manager, you're properly delegating to make sure things get done in a timely manner, not doing everything yourself.

His talk is more an indictment of our current workaholic culture when it comes to some people and some jobs. Not that we need to get women out of it specifically since it makes them unhappy. That we as a society need to figure out better management structures and social policies that allow us to be productive and happy. Why not push to make sure everyone is content at their jobs most of the time?

He's right. I used to think monogamy was stupid, but honestly I think it is far and away the best social system devised, and it seems to be the healthiest compromise between men and women. Polygamy has historically been God-awful for the vast majority of the population - men and women.

Multiple flaws with his speech:

Birth rates have plummeted due to wealth, not feminism. The connection is pretty established that birth rates drop at $5000 per capita income. Japan has much less feminism and even lower birth rates. The US has similar fertility rates as Qatar, China, Iran, etc. These are not hot beds of feminism. Declining birth rates are due to wealth.

Blames feminism rather than the modern economic system for women's modern economic issues. Jobs could provide stability and living wages if there was a political pressure for them to do so.

Confuses the high wage, long work hour professional class with the ownership class. The ownership class do not necessarily work long hours like doctors and lawyers do. The ownership class earn money off of assets, the professional class earn money from labor. He doesn't understand the difference.

Studies have shown parents aren't happier than non parents, if anything they are worse off regarding that.

His arguments about women's hypergamy and wanting men of higher socioeconomic status is correct. Lots of high status women are facing this issue, looking for higher ses men and not finding them.

His views on men earning more due to men working longer hours at more dangerous jobs is true.

I'll never understand why people love this guy. When he said Trump was intelligent, that told me all I need to know.

I haven't watched the video and I have idea who this guy is but I glossed over the comment section and I already know that whatever he's going to talk about is some backwards ass rhetoric that made sense in the 1950's.
