Hypergamy is a thing in sociology, similar but slightly different to how reds use it. It still means marrying up, but the 'up' is undefined. With TRP, the up seems to implicitly be 'status' though they don't give a good definition of what status is. In sociology 'up' can be anything; education, money, socioeconomic class.

Well, an interesting thing happened. In terms of education, men are now hypergamous. They tend to marry women with a better education than themselves (and such marriages do better). This is a reversal of how out use to be. Now, I'm of the mindset that this isn't due to any innate drives, but opportunity. Women in general are now more educated than men. The hypergamous options for men are more plentiful, and the hypergamous options for women are less so. So as people pair off men tend to be the hypergamous ones ( though IIRC assortative mating is still the most predominant).

This is an aspect of hypergamy we don't see talked much about. Virtually all women are hypergamous when it comes to height because men are I general taller. Men on average make more so women tend to be hypergamous when it comes to wealth. But how much of that is due to an innate drive versus just the options available.

Edit: I should add that this is more relevant when considering large groups. When you look at a study that says women go for men that make better money, we should consider the men on average make more money, so the group of hypergamous women will be larger than the hypergamous men just because of the options available.
