I guess it's because gay men have way better options in the SMP since getting laid for them is as easy as to order from Amazon Prime so they are more motivated to care for their looks even past their 20s.

Might also be due to the casual nature of the gay SMP.

The phenomenon of the "dad bod" and married men (and women) letting themselves stems from the idea that once you're hitched, you're basically settled for life.

I was walking in a gayborhood to get to my friend's house and passed by 3 diet restaurants. Seriously, the sign said "Fatfree Mexican Cuisine". Later, I passed by a street vendor who was selling CeraVe, a skin lotion normally distributed by dermatologists.

Gay men understand (better than most other men, because people out and out lie to them about it) that looks are paramount for sexual attractiveness. They're men attracted to men. They're men seeking sex from men. They might be gay, but they're still men with male sex drives. Hence the emphasis on fitness in gay male culture. They're attracted to fit men with muscular definition (like most women are). And sex is very easy for most gay men to get.

Child-rearing and family might have a lot to do with it. For example, I've seen friends getting out of shape once they got married, not because they binge on food on purpose, but because 1) less time to workout due to family duties 2) Stress from having to provide the the family, as well as waking up 5 AM to change diapers, 3) finishing off food that the kids won't eat, or wife won't eat due to pregnancy.

They don't call it Dad bods for nothing.

My dad ten years ago started getting pedicures. Mostly because my mom thought his feet had evolved to claws and didn't want them touching her at night, but now he loves and feels more comfortable wearing sandals and such.

Men it's okay to care about how you look.

For all the unique problems and challenges the gay community faces, I imagine not having to worry about impressing the opposite sex and being able to get laid whenever and wherever you want does wonders for them in terms of reducing their stress level.

Testosterone is definitely a component of this but self care is aswell. Gay men are much more conscious about their outward appearance since their target mate is visually oriented (just like women ). Straight men have been raised to think that looks dont matter as much as money/personality. Also conventional masculine perceptions tend to conflate meticulous self care with femininity.

It's because gay men evaluate each other the way straight men evaluate women -- looks primary. Straight women evaluate men based on looks, too, but not to the same degree as straight men evaluate women based on looks. Gay men, however, evaluate each other based on looks primary, so in the gay SMP it's very important to hone your looks -- which is why we see gay men focusing on their appearance to a similar degree as straight women -- they're both aiming for the male gaze (just one male gaze is straight, while the other male gaze is gay).

Gay men are more fit than straight people or lesbians. Being physically attractive is much more important when you are dealing entirely with the gender that puts a lot of value into it.
