He didn't say that. He said what he said, which is that it's more socially acceptable to call someone a creep compared to cunt, which is a "bad word" that we generally censor. And as he says, it's not under contention. It really is how our society views the usage.

There is one little road we can go down, though. If by offensive, you mean impact on the person being called it, you could probably say that cunt is such a generic insult like shit head, bitch, fuck face, etc. that it is less often taken as personally as creep is. You can use cunt any time you don't like someone. You can even call a guy a cunt (or a chick a dick). You usually only call someone a creep when they are creepy though, so the insult will hit closer to home for the creep.

All in all, though, I'm not sure what you're trying to get to the bottom of with your question. Do you have a particular idea you're trying to flesh out? Why does it matter if one word offends people more than the other?

No it isn't. OK was the original iteration and has been used since the 1800s. The phonetic spelling didn't come until much later and is actually considered more casual. AP style, for example, uses OK, not okay.

Steven Pinker has an excellent article about curse words in general, and it has a long section about cunt.

One important insight that some of the wealthier posters might consider: can you imagine what your genitals would have smelled like if you lived in a world without all the anti fungal and other infection remedies that are easily available in CVS today?

Maybe that explains something of the word's power.

But seriously, read Pinker's article. It's informative as hell, funny, so funny even a feminist is likely to crack a brief smile.

I grew up within black American culture.

I didn't realize cunt was a thing, nor that it offended so many until after college.

No one I know ever used the word growing up and I never really heard it in movies or television or music or even read it in books.

Though thanks to my gay male friends, when I think of "cunt." It's usually a good thing.

If someone is dressed fiercely and enviably you say "she's cunt."

I believe that usage came from the fact that the women typically called "cunts" were "divas" or "HBICs" or "AFOGs" whom people couldn't deny held some sort of social power -- I think of this scene from Dynasty particularly.

I don't think it's a "term of oppression" it's more of a curse word. "Creepy" has meaning outside of identifying a guy who espouses certain behavior. It was never a "bad" word to begin with. "Cunt" is really only used in the US as an insulting curse word.

If police dispatch gets a call from someone distressed explaining why some dude is "creepy" they probably have to follow up on it. They will ask about behavior. The cops aren't rushing to someone's aid if they say "help there's a creep nearby" "ok what is he doing?" "Nothing he just looks creepy."

Well creep implies that something is wrong with him. In this context it's probably a stalker or a guy trying to climb through the windows.

So yeah if you call the cops and tell them that there is a creep they are not going to think "a dude that's merely unattractive that hit on a chick", but "a weirdo that's probably escaped the mental hospital".

A cunt is someone that's being a cunt. You need conscious effort to be a cunt.

A creep is someone that triggers your fight, flight and freeze response. They lack social and situational awareness and give off a potentially dangerous vibe.

A cunt decides to be a cunt. A creep doesn't care about enough to take their state of mind into consideration. It's similar, but a cunt knows what they are doing while a creep is unpredictable and just weird.

The cunt may be loud and aggressive, but you know what you are handling.

The creepy dude could just be weird or a stalker/serial killer/etc.

You don't know what you are up against and they send shivers down your spine. Even if a creepy dude is just there they are scarier than the cunt that throws scissors at you, because you don't know what they are going to do and why they are so tense, nervous, awkward and just plain creepy.

Having dealt with a stalker who's now in jail for said stalking, he fit he description of creepy well. Funnily enough I think creepy is a bad descriptor. The male cops were the ones who called him that in addition to dangerous.

Cunt is usually synonymous with "bitchy."

But being bitchy isn't dangerous.
