Yes, my wife is my family.

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. -Genesis 2:24.

[–]SmurfESmurferson4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

"You don't get to choose your blood; if you're very lucky, you do get to choose your family."

Edit: Not biblical. Just a life lesson I've learned the hard way.

[–]ProtoPillRed Before Red2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's a good quote. Thanks for sharing.

[–]SmurfESmurferson0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not a famous quote, if you're googling it. It was something my mother used to tell me.

How many people do you think have that view of marriage?

Very few.

[–]SmurfESmurferson4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Smart spouses have that view.

[–]ProtoPillRed Before Red6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Why is country capitalized?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Because a Country is important for the sake of self. But then again I'm European. I have bricks near my house far older than the united states.

Um which of the authors of the Bible never had their own country? Israel and Judea where countries for several centuries

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

According to my college teachers Israel and Judea were fictional nations the modern jews created to have a sense of belonging and unity.

I consider him family more than most of my biological family.

[–]FleetingWishStepford Girl2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No. I value my SO much more. He chose to be with me, he certainly doesn't have to be with me, and I chose him, he wasn't forced upon me by genetics.

I don't get a long with a large portion of my family. They haven't earned my loyalty and trust the way he has.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Absolutely. In fact, I was taught growing up that once I married my allegiance to my birth family was expected to take the back seat to my wife and kids. She is without a doubt my family. She even has the family name. ;-)

[–]StingrayVCRed Pill Woman1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes. More so than my parents and siblings. They are extended family. My family comes first.

[–]LifterofThingsDelicate Feminine Flower1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, moreso than my parents and sibling. My partner and any kids we have are my "primary" family.

[–]IwanttoliveinspaceMGTOW2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, I stopped contact with my family about 14 years ago.

I think family is who you want it to be.

I have very close male friends that I consider like brothers (even though they are from different countries to me).

I don't have a sexual partner, but I'd imagine some could see them as family, but it depends on your context of family

[–]appencapndefender of fee fees1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't value my family or the notion of family. Bonds have to be earned.

[–]nomdplumeFormer Alpha0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes. For good and for potentially unfortunate.

[–]heavenorhell20 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes of course. You will likely spend more years with your wife than any other person. She is certainly family.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

No. Family and romantic partners are separate in my mind.

Also, if I consider my gf family, wouldn't fucking her be incest?

[–]SmurfESmurferson2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I want to give you a serious response, but I feel like you're taking the piss.

On the off chance that you actually are serious, I'll put myself up as evidence that you're wrong.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Half taking the piss but also half serious. That's why it's weird for me to consider a sexual partner "family." I don't wanna stick my dick in family.

[–]dallasdarling0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Then you don't intend to create a new family with your intimate partner? Would you not consider your spouse and your children to be a nuclear family, of which you are all members?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Then you don't intend to create a new family with your intimate partner?

No I don't.

[–]dallasdarling0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Then why would you answer this question?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because I'm in a relationship and the question didn't specify I had to want kids to answer it. Chill.

[–]winndixie0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If she behaves like it yes I'll grant her that. If she plays her role and reinforces the cohesion of the family and family members including me and gets along, then yes. If she likes to tread the thin line of how much she can not give a fuck, be unpleasant while seeing how far she can go and still stay in the marriage, then no she should be divorced and not family.

Also she is not treated like how I would treat my parents, siblings or kids. Because a wife is not a parent sibling or kid.

[–]MorpheusGodOfDreamsCaught Red Handed0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

not the same. This is a major problem in many marriages that over time the romantic relationship is replaced with a familial one. To maintain a strong family structure the distinction between blood family and a spouse must remain strong as well.

/u/ProtoPill brought up the bible, but translated it wrong. it does not say "hold fast," but "cleave," which could mean cling onto or the exact opposite meaning, to divide (through sex).

so I will go a step further to bring up the hebrew language. Man and woman is Ish and Ishah, both with the root word Esh, which means FIRE. There must be a romantic fire that is part of the relationship, or it will die.

we can go even further into the magical and wise hebrew language to examine the very ancient letters themselves in the words for father and mother. the original language, not the aramaic script, used pictographic signs much like Egyptian hieroglyphs.

Father is Ab or Aba, A + B. The A is drawn as the head of an ox, representing strength, while the B is drawn as the floor plan for a tent. Father means strength of the house.

Mother is Ema or Em, with the E written as an A. So in A + M, A is strength, while the M means water. Mother is the strong water, or the glue of the family.

[–]ProtoPillRed Before Red2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I didn't translate it wrong. Your quote is from the Kings James Version, and mine the English Standard Version. I do agree though that the sexual relationship in marriage is important.

[–]MorpheusGodOfDreamsCaught Red Handed1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm using the Hebrew. Dabak means to cleave, which has both meanings when counting the variations. however the "cling to" is more clear.

[–]stats135-2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (41 children) | Copy Link

There are two key things about family. One, you can't choose who your family members are. If I could choose Id have Bill Gates as my father. Two, you can't change who is in your family no matter what. What I do might make my family love me or hate me, but they will always be my family. Your mother is your mother forever. A spouse satisfies neither of those unique qualities.

[–]UmbrellaCorp19616 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yes she does. She's the mother of your kids.

[–]despisedlove2Reality Pill Tradcon RP-1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

That doesn't make her family. She has the freedom to stop being my spouse anytime a hypergamist urge may strike her.

If divorce didn't exist, she would be.

Not RP, but this is just common sense.

[–]UmbrellaCorp19617 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Freedom to stop being your spouse? Yes. But you two can't stop being parents to the kids. Let's face it, once you have kids, you can never get her out of your life. Choose your baby mom wisely.

[–]despisedlove2Reality Pill Tradcon RP0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

All good points, but that still doesn't make her your family.

[–]UmbrellaCorp19612 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well it does fulfill the 2 'key criteria' as stated by op upthread.

[–]despisedlove2Reality Pill Tradcon RP-1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actually it violates both the stated criteria, so I guess I don't understand what you are saying.

[–]lurfly 1 points1 points1 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Just curious, do you consider adopted children family? Aunts and uncles who married into the family?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Adopted children? Yes. They become family in a similar manner as a spouse, since he/she would also be "adopted" family.

Past aunt/uncle we weren't expected to view them as family, but often still called them by an honorable like "uncle Rob" as a sign of respect. (This was as a child of course. At adulthood all that silliness goes away and first names are used. Except mom. She's still mom.)

[–]SmurfESmurferson1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This answer is really unnerving, as a married adult.

I chose to give my life to my husband, a choice that includes his family. He chose to give his life to me, a choice that includes my family.

Our families give us the respect that is due to someone who chooses to be a part of the family, as opposed to one who just happens to have some DNA in common.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be sure our families are still blood. The intent is to indicate that blood should NOT come between husband and wife. My loyalty lies with her first and them second, after my children. So 3rd? Lol

[–]RareBlur0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (29 children) | Copy Link

They are your family petcisly because you choose to make them your family. They are unique that way.

[–]littleprivateplaces[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link

Can you choose to make someone your family?

[–]RareBlur2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would say yes. That's what marriage is. I'm choosing and accepting this person to be my family. That's why there were weddings in the first place to show the community that these two people are now a family.

Seriously, how do you think families get formed?

[–]littleprivateplaces[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

People have kids.

I'm really asking you. Can you advance an idea?

[–]SmurfESmurferson1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Ok, all jackass kidding aside ... This may seem a bit juvenile, but I've never written it out before, so please forgive me.

I threw this quote into the recesses of this Internet forum, but it's actually something that my parents made it a point to hammer home pretty much every day of my nearly-40-year-old-life:

"You don't get to choose your blood; if you're very lucky, you do get to choose your family."

Family is obligation, and joy. It's responsibility, showing up, and future generations. It's beautiful and obligatory, all at once.

But a couple of times in your lifetime, you get to make a choice about a relationship (be it romantic, platonic, or some version of familial). You get to say "this person belongs in my life forever. They are family."

For me, my choice of family includes:

  • My husband. I can't even imagine trying to exist without his wit, humor, and intelligence.

  • My best friend; actually, my parents' best friend's kid (who was born a few weeks before I was). We grew up together, and I can't imagine a world without him. As importantly, neither can my husband.

  • Certain friends. Make fun of it all you want, but the whole "urban tribe" thing is very, very true.

  • Certain family. Sometimes, getting to choose your family means that you choose existing family members.

Sadly, sometimes, it also means you choose to walk away from certain family members.

But the choice is yours.

[–]littleprivateplaces[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

This is so convoluted...

You can't walk away from your siblings, parents, or kids, they're always family. Is your husband your husband if you walk away?

[–]SmurfESmurferson2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It's 3am here, so maybe I didn't phrase it exactly.

My point is actually the opposite of yours: I can walk away fro my siblings and their kids.

(My parents are no longer with us, and I don't have kids ... So, ask someone else about those groups?)

But my husband? He's my family. I vowed my life, my honor, to him. And I meant it.

Unless he starts beating the shyte out of me tomorrow (spoiler: he won't), I'm not walking away.

And - surprise! - there are a few other people in my life that I consider family. They aren't necessarily blood related.

[–]littleprivateplaces[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Another poster stated a view of marriage that was on religious grounds. Many religions would not look favorably on no fault divorce or same sex marriage. Do you agree with a conception of marriage that excludes same sex marriage and no fault divorce?

[–]SmurfESmurferson1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

I'm not religious, at all. I can give you my opinion on marriage, but I'm guessing it'll fall on deaf ears (based on you being religious, and me not at all).

So, no. My personal belief is that lifelong vows aren't anything to fuck with.

I took them once (I never thought I would), and I don't foresee ever taking them again.

[–]littleprivateplaces[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

I'm religious?

My personal belief is that lifelong vows aren't anything to fuck with

So you would agree that marriage vow is only as powerful as how you feel about it. That doesn't sound like your relationship with your parents, which is founded on something other than your feels.

[–]SmurfESmurferson2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Hey, asshole, my parents are dead.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you were arranged married outside of your choice and you lived in a region where divorce is illegal, does that make her your family?

just hypothetically speaking since both of those things do happen
