sane adults pursue relationships of mutual consent, whatever form that takes.

we live in a culture that generally pushes male dominance, so it's unsurprising that that's what most people fall into, but there's nothing inherently gendered about the roles themselves.

what is important is that everyone is getting what they want, within reason. there are people who don't want to have to make the big decisions. who would prefer to have someone else in control of their lives. it's uncommon and discouraged in western society, but yes it's definitely a thing.

the ideal is for people like that to find someone willing to take to take the dominant role without being abusive. which also exists and isn't TRP

the mistake TRP insists on making is thinking it's even remotely acceptable to try and force other people into that role. or that it should be decided by the thing twixt your nethers.

we live in a culture that generally pushes male dominance, so it's unsurprising that that's what most people fall into, but there's nothing inherently gendered about the roles themselves.

Except for the faster-mutating y chromosome, differential rates of reproductive success (ie. mostly males have been weeded out of the gene pool), gender-specific dimorphism in both body & brain anatomy, differentials in gamete production and biological investment in conception, differentials in paternity vs maternal certainty, hidden ovulation, differing variances across a broad range of mental attributes.

Except for that stuff, it's all cultural.

[–]pyr66612 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

all of those factors and more apply to plenty of other animals where individuals from the smaller sex can still be dominant. the alpha in a wolf pack is rarely the most physically imposing specimen.

Except for that stuff, it's all cultural.

"all that stuff" amounts to 6 inches in height and a dozen lbs. unless you're an Olympian or some other top .001% of the world, they really don't matter for much of anything.

but as already mentioned, leadership, dominance, force of personality, whatever you want to call it, is quite divorced from aptitude. physical or mental.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

It's bizarre that you think male dominance is "cultural" rather than something we're equipped for by biology.

Male bodies are built for dominance (or at least to compete for it). Why wouldn't their minds be built the same way?

[–]pyr6666 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Male bodies are built for dominance

physical prowess, not dominance. you and roe seem to have much the same issue. I've already explained that they're quite separate.

it'd save me a lot of writing if you went with that thread.

Why wouldn't their minds be built the same way?

QED. 99% of everyone is mostly submissive. odds are you work for someone else, don't lead your social group, and probably don't want to change that significantly. even if you are one of the naturally dominant personalities in the world, then you have to recognize that you are wildly outnumbered.

these behaviors and attitudes can even vary greatly based on context for reasons no one has yet divined. it seems to come with being social creatures.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Dominance is relative and situational, yes. Men are built to compete for dominance (that being the strategy that optimises evolutionary fitness) but not all will succeed. Women are built to be attracted to dominant men because that's the best strategy for them. (Why? Because it increases the chance their sons will be dominant and hence have more offspring etc. if you think it's silly and circular you should check out the Bird of Paradise)

Let me ask you a question: do you think that male gorillas are built for dominance? Go do some reading about gorillas if you're not sure.

Humans are not gorillas, but what's true of gorillas is usually true to a lesser extent of humans. Our evolutionary strategy lies somewhere between the polygamy of gorillas and the monogamy of gibbons.

[–]pyr6662 points3 points4 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

do you think that male gorillas are built for dominance? Go do some reading about gorillas if you're not sure.

i suggest you do the same. there are gorilla ape species that are matriarchal, such as bonobos. the gibbons you mention are egalitarian, with a very low degree of sexual dimorphism.

Men are built to compete for dominance... but not all will succeed. Women are built to be attracted to dominant men because that's the best strategy for them.

this is your assertion. now demonstrate it in fact, rather than conjecture.

edit: actually, on some more thought, it doesn't actually matter. although, as mentioned, the biological proclivity of humans is something very interesting to debate, we're getting off topic.

using nature as a model for morals or pragmatism is an argument neither of us can or should make, given that we're both in climate controlled buildings communicating using the closest thing to fucking magic either of us will live to see.

also, this sort of pseudo-darwinistic moralizing has a very bad track record in human history. both as a matter of truth and moral consequence.

edit2: derped a word

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Uhh, bonobos are most definitely not a species of gorilla. Your blunder is on the scale of "some species of dog, such as cats..."

I would have accepted calling bonobos chimpanzees, but gorillas?

[–]pyr6662 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i was definitely thinking "ape", but for some reason used the wrong cranberry word :P

though in terms of wrongness it's more it's more like lumping foxes and coyotes together.

[–]MissPearlEditor of frequent typos.2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Do I have a brain that's "built for dominance" then? :3

I'm good at getting leadership roles outside of my kinks. On the other hand I'm 5'5" and somewhere between 125 and 130 lbs. My shoulders are less broad than a man, and while I'm scrappy, I have no internet tough guy illusions- I get power over stuff because I do things and communicate articulately.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Not every combination of genes yields a highly competitive product, I'm afraid. No doubt there are males with minds poorly optimised for their role just as there are males with bodies poorly optimised for their role.

Evolution is a process. The human gene pool has not been carefully optimised, humans are a very new species and our habitat changes rapidly. Asking why some humans have minds poorly optimised for their role is a bit like asking why some humans are ugly -- there's no evolutionary value to being ugly, it's just something that happens.

[–]MissPearlEditor of frequent typos.1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

But being physically intimidating doesn't seem to be a prerequisite. QED I think you have two problems, thinking physical size and strength are the be all and end all of power (history is littered with tiny, sickly powerful people) and assuming that being a big muscled lump makes you the most fit to lead when you have a society oriented around coordinating communication based, complicated and trust oriented projects. Human society belongs to the talkers- we domesticate and castrate huge lumps muscle and make it into oxen.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think you understand evolution. Or Latin.

[–]MissPearlEditor of frequent typos.-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think you think your strength matters because you ain't got much else going on than what nature gave you and power fantasies about a civilisation collapse where you would be more useful.

And you can't actually back your shit up, so you resort to attacking rhetorical flourishes.

[–]MagicGainbowKeepin' it real, havin' a feel0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

history is littered with tiny, sickly powerful people

Made powerful by the labors of the physically strong.

Human society belongs to the talkers- we domesticate and castrate huge lumps muscle and make it into oxen.

That sounds as power fantasy as what you are accusing Gigglef of.

[–]MissPearlEditor of frequent typos.3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

we domesticate and castrate huge lumps muscle and make it into oxen.

Literal cows are bigger and stronger than you, are you. Are they dominant over you? Nope, that's my point.

Made powerful by the labors of the physically strong.

Right. All strength qualifies you to do is be a heavy lifter, not a leader.

[–]MagicGainbowKeepin' it real, havin' a feel1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Literal cows are bigger and stronger than you, are you. Are they dominant over you? Nope, that's my point.

A cow is not, a bull is very dominant.

And there are plenty of physically strong leaders, look at Charlemagne part of his mystique/fame was his mighty physique which was needed at the time.

[–]MissPearlEditor of frequent typos.-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

A cow is not, a bull is very dominant.

Cow is the common name of the species. But a cow is still bigger than you, are they dominant to you?

[–]MagicGainbowKeepin' it real, havin' a feel1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Depends on the context, socially no, but if I were trapped with one, I would not call myself the dominant one.

And if you want to play pedant, cattle is the word you want, cow is a colloquialism.

[–]MagicGainbowKeepin' it real, havin' a feel0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

there's no evolutionary value to being ugly, it's just something that happens.

In a way like intelligence, it's entirely random and in the case of humans now counter productive to breeding as Idiocracy pints out the stupid are outbreeding the smart(not that it matters).

[–]oxydercesBlue Pill Woman0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Male bodies are built for dominance (or at least to compete for it). Why wouldn't their minds be built the same way?

God give me patience.

So is it equally apparent to you that having a bigger brain means you're smarter? That's intuitive, right? And that was something people thought a century ago: that men's bigger brains made them smarter.

And the clear conclusion is that because blue whale brains have a good 12 lbs on ours, they are the sapient masters of the deep and we should bow doooooown

PS women use their brain size more efficiently and brain size has nothing to do with anything

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

we live in a culture that generally pushes male dominance, so it's unsurprising that that's what most people fall into, but there's nothing inherently gendered about the roles themselves.

Sounds like bullshit to me.

[–]pyr6661 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

truly, your insights into the matter have reshaped the entire discussion

[–]YeahaNSFWaccount 0 points0 points0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Thanks for the response.

that it should be decided by the thing twixt your nethers.

I do wonder though how often we do make decisions by the nethers. We are not inherently rational beings, that is a taught/learned behavior, so I think the question of what is more likely to happen because of people's emotions, both the male and female, is still important.

what is important is that everyone is getting what they want, within reason. there are people who don't want to have to make the big decisions. who would prefer to have someone else in control of their lives. it's uncommon and discouraged in western society, but yes it's definitely a thing.

But is it a good thing? Are they just weak men setting themselves up to be used? I'm not really expecting you to have the answer, but it is one that I wonder about.

[–]pyr6664 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But is it a good thing?

it's just a thing. it's neither good nor bad. akin to the sky being blue.

Are they just weak men setting themselves up to be used?

i would imagine it's a more significant problem for them, but every personality has it's obvious points that are going to cause issues. the more assertive sort are constantly butting heads, if you want a direct comparison.

the key here is trust, the giving of which should be made with large quantities of thought and care.

[–]YeahaNSFWaccount 0 points0 points0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The bit about trust certainly seems correct, no matter what relationship. I guess it comes down to, from a TRP perspective, of not trusting the female side of the relationship. Yeah, guess there lies most of the answer. It is whether or not you have faith in your partner, or if your brutally pragmatic.

[–]pyr6661 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

depends on what your goal is. what you describe as "brutal pragmatism" is a great way to wind up in a string of shallow relationships that end badly.

[–]oxydercesBlue Pill Woman13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (65 children) | Copy Link

Male sexual submission is an aberration of the sexual order,

Articulate how it is even possible to be a "aberration of the sexual order."

Half of men have submissive fantasies. Memes in patriarchal cultures that support the idea of woman as ruler of the household (if not politics) and praising uxoriousness are common. This is not an aberration.

A male sub is subverting his natural role as a strong provider and protector to his woman,

Males have hardly played this role uniformly throughout history. Many cultures have encouraged it for various reasons.

This results in a lack of true sexual desire on the part of a woman

As a woman who is maddeningly into hot submissive men, as in it arouses me, this is just so ridiculous it's impossible to address.

Ughh, I realize you're working within TRP framework but this is a perfect illustration of why it's entirely nonsense to me.

[–]MissPearlEditor of frequent typos.5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (62 children) | Copy Link

My "whaaaa? my brain hurts, how could you even?" moments are the insistence that men collectively prefer female submission. :P

[–]oxydercesBlue Pill Woman2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I just have no idea how to respond. It goes against all of my experiences as a sexual human being!

[–]jacks1000-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

A small minority of women are Dommes. A much larger group of women are hard-core subbies.

Most women are "subbie-light" to some degree.

TBP = outliers that can't accept they are the fringe.

[–]babyguineapig4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You need to get out more, pudding.

[–]jacks1000-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You need to get out more, pudding.

The "BDSM community" is an aberration, most people - even those into BDSM of various kinds - don't have a need to form a "community" around it.

Most people don't form "communities" around their sexual tastes.

[–]babyguineapig1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Really? Seriously, just get out more.

[–]YeahaNSFWaccount 1 points1 points1 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I understand. I think /r/TheRedPill would say that they are only concerned with the average good, and that aberrant behavior to the best outcome (male dominance) is just that, and while not necessarily evil, should be ignored by those that seek a fulfill life.

[–]oxydercesBlue Pill Woman7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (54 children) | Copy Link

Half of all men have this fantasy, as I said. Certain studies show more males with submissive fantasies than females. That's not aberrant by anyone's definition.

[–]pillburtRed Pill Mana mana1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

This explains why so many men liked 50 Shades, way more than women!

[–]Those_Who_RemainIrrelevant Homosexual7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

I guess you are sarcastic, but there is a very obvious reason: The main characters were (if I am not mistaken) a male dominant and a female submissive.

For men who want to be submissive, such a narrative isn't really that interesting.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Still, would the sex-reversed story sell well?

Do men buy books, watch movies, about weak men submitting to women? Or do they read books and watch movies about strong men succeeding?

As for male submission fantasies, I'd wager most men have at some point fantasised about just about anything and everything, but it's not a dominant mode of fantasy. A man might fantasise about a role reversal situation where all of a sudden he is the one being pursued for sex instead of vice versa, but very few men actually wish to be permanently submissive to a woman. Few enough that it's easy to argue those few are just broken.

[–]Those_Who_RemainIrrelevant Homosexual3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And on what do you base your ideas of submissive fantasies on men? Your entire post reads like some kind of desperate rationalization.

[–]MagicGainbowKeepin' it real, havin' a feel1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

A man might fantasise about a role reversal situation where all of a sudden he is the one being pursued for sex instead of vice versa, but very few men actually wish to be permanently submissive to a woman.

Very true,, I would love to be the one to have the aggressive moves made on me but long term? fuck no, just look at tall the numerous stories of submissive guys basically broken down as a bitch.

Like the guy who's sex life spiraled out until he was wearing a chastity belt and she was cheating, or the open relationship from a few months back where it turned out the guy was being played and the bigging up of his submissiveness was buttering up so that he'd look after the kids while she fucked around.

To put it simply, I would not like to be properly submissive/on the back foot because once you are they keep testing.

[–]oxydercesBlue Pill Woman-2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

fuck no, just look at tall the numerous stories of submissive guys basically broken down as a bitch.

Where are you finding these? And are they really any worse than the countless stories you hear about male/female D/s relationships turning abusive? Because that happens a lot. BDSM is full of protocol because power encourages abuse.

[–]MagicGainbowKeepin' it real, havin' a feel2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Where are you finding these?

Life and reddit.

They are worse in that they are not the equivalent, if a male dom starts abusing his female sub legally in a lot of places she can kill him and get a way with it, a guy could do nothing and just walk out and still potentially get arrested.

In a lot of cases it continues on due to bias, a guy can't be abused but a chick tells reddit her boyfriend didn't like her dress and ww3 breaks out.

[–]MagicGainbowKeepin' it real, havin' a feel1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

That and there is no male shit test, males do not constantly poke and pull it te relationship to make sure it's strong.

[–]MissPearlEditor of frequent typos.1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Hey, don't call my sexual partners "broken". How would you like it if I compared your your masculinity unfairly to what my ideal man looks like?

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you don't want your feelings hurt then this is not the subreddit for you.

[–]MissPearlEditor of frequent typos.4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over your crushing absence of manhood.

[–]oxydercesBlue Pill Woman-2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know right? :p

[–]jacks10000 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Certain studies show more males with submissive fantasies

I've read some of those studies, and they categorize "submissive" and "dominant" in a highly idiosyncratic way to get the results they want. You want to pretend that there are more subbie men then women, claim that fantasizing about a woman on top is "submissive."

Just goes to show that TBP attracts women with hangups about their BDSM kink.

[–]oxydercesBlue Pill Woman2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've read some of those studies, and they categorize "submissive" and "dominant" in a highly idiosyncratic way to get the results they want.

I'd love to see an example of this. The definitions I've seen took female submission a lot further than "passive partner," and likewise took female domination further than "woman on top."

Just goes to show that TBP attracts women with hangups about their BDSM kink.

lol I have no such hangups, I assure you

[–]YeahaNSFWaccount 1 points1 points1 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Perhaps not aberrant in that people sometimes fantasize about it, but in terms of a sustainable lifestyle, one that will allow the male and society to flourish, I think I know where TRP thinks on that one.

[–]Those_Who_RemainIrrelevant Homosexual6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

one that will allow the male and society to flourish,

I believe it is a society in which everyone can chase after their own personal preferences, including the minorities. Submissive men may be a minority, but their happiness is still important for society as a whole.

[–]YeahaNSFWaccount 0 points0 points0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Thanks for weighing in!

That sounds good at face value. One thing you do find though in TRP thought is that we now give to much credence to the minorities opinion, and that allowing minority opinions to be placed on a pedestal of opinion higher then a more major one, then we merely flip the script and harm a different group of people. Most commonly this is discussed in terms of feminism. The argument is that in the brutal world of realism, life is a zero sum game of various groups; for some to win, others must lose/die.

Harsh, but hard to argue knowing history.

In the case of the malesub, they would be a detriment to any society that allow too many of them to express themselves within the larger society. The overall degradation of masculine toughness and power would weaken the society as a whole and harm it's ability to compete on the world stage. Ironically, it's an argument for the personal being the political.

Ironically, it's an argument for the personal being the political.

On what do you base this assumption/idea?

[–]YeahaNSFWaccount 0 points0 points0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Absurd argument to illustrate the point...

Vast swaths of men were slaughtered in wars all across the world and all across time. Various societies ensured that they cultivated certain traits of toughness into the population, and compliance and peace were not one of the encouraged traits until very recently in history.

The Spartans; well known and are still paragons of martial strength beyond that allowed by their numbers.

The Japanese; a people so strong even while facing insane odds that it took two nuclear strikes for them to surrender.

History is the story of martial strength, and while it may be unpopular to think now, the truth is that vast armies are not going to deploy millions of women to go to war. We know the various biological reasons for this, not the least of which the more value reproductively of women then men, and this has filtered into culture. Perhaps this is the course of the aversion that nearly all men and most women feel towards the malesub; that when the swords clash they just won't be able to hack it. Perhaps not 100% accurate, but no one ever said evolution was rational.

[–]MissPearlEditor of frequent typos.0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

the truth is that vast armies are not going to deploy millions of women to go to war

But the guys that don't actually go out to war get to fuck the women while the various martial cultures are off having gay sex in the barracks. (I'm not being derisive to them, monastic military cultures tend to have proud homosexual traditions- including both the Spartans and the Japanese Samurai). ;)

[–]oxydercesBlue Pill Woman4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (27 children) | Copy Link

TRP does not even have the slightest coherent inkling of a theory about what will help society flourish.

If a male is submissive, knows he is submissive, pursues submissive relationships, and is happy and productive in submissive relationships, how is that not "flourishing"?

[–]Pointless_Endeavors0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

TRP does not even have the slightest coherent inkling of a theory about what will help society flourish.

Maybe because TRP could give two shits of how to improve society or help it flourish. You might as well ask what their position is on global warming.

[–]oxydercesBlue Pill Woman1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Then why do I keep running into armchair political scientists who are TRP? Tell them to knock that off for me, lol.

[–]YeahaNSFWaccount 0 points0 points0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

An argument against male submission I am aware of is that with the male have a larger muscular and endurance capacity then women, he is most logically suited for more demanding work and greater positions of power. Women, with the unique ability to bare children and a decreased level of physical power in relation to males, are in a better position for the traditionally feminine roles they've inhabited until recently.

Not saying I agree that is is needed, but I bet if WWIII started tomorrow, society would likely reorder itself along traditional lines, because they are based on biological programming, not cultural ideas we can change on a whim.

An argument against the male acting submissive is that it is an encouragement of an reproductively suboptimal strategy. "He's submissive to me; I need his child!" is not likely to be a sentence heard or thought by the vast majority of women, again based on evopsych concepts.

An argument against male submission I am aware of is that with the male have a larger muscular and endurance capacity then women, he is most logically suited for more demanding work and greater positions of power.

This assumes a psychological dimension of "domination" to accompany the (typical) larger musculature which has simply never been established.

It does not follow, furthermore, that being suited for "more demanding work"* means that one has more than the political capacity of a gnat. Come on, this is obvious. Would you seriously put Hulk Hogan in office over Queen Elizabeth I? Or Napoleon? Many men were capable of "more demanding work" than Napoleon! This is nonsense.

Women, with the unique ability to bare children and a decreased level of physical power in relation to males, are in a better position for the traditionally feminine roles they've inhabited until recently.

Has the last 50 years of evidence that women have been vastly, vastly, vastly underestimated and are fully capable of performing any male role that doesn't require the extreme ends of human muscular capacity made any genuine impression on you?

Not saying I agree that is is needed, but I bet if WWIII started tomorrow, society would likely reorder itself along traditional lines, because they are based on biological programming, not cultural ideas we can change on a whim.

You clearly have little real idea of what "biological programming" would entail, and have a very conservative view of the long-established and very well corroborated influence of culture upon the human psyche.

"He's submissive to me; I need his child!" is not likely to be a sentence heard or thought by the vast majority of women, again based on evopsych concepts.

If you have no evidence for this other than "it doesn't align with evopsych concepts" -- and, to be clear, you don't -- then maybe the problem is with your evopsych concepts.

*Additionally, this assumes "demanding work" means solely "strength." Women typically recover more quickly and have greater stamina than men providing commensurate fitness levels. Women, unlike the popular opinion of gender roles which was the sole province of the middle-class 1950s, have worked to obtain food and resources for the duration of human history. It's just that their ability to do so was limited to specific fields because of patriarchy.

Women can do whatever men can once men have taught them how to. And there's a reason why they shouldn't.

"Muscular power" to the degree that would make significant difference between male or female performance is not required for 99% of human endeavors. That's like saying "men can't do anything because they can't bear children." lol

Firstly, it must be understood that I may or may not personally believe the opinion I am writing. My attempt here is to gain alternative opinions to various ideas common to TRP and evopsych is a major basis for TRP concepts. They also have a great degree to say regarding the question of male sexual identity and being male, I'm interested.

A significant amount of traditional conservatism is also common on TRP, and I do understand much of why. While what you said regarding the last 50 years is correct, one can also not forget the last several thousand years of human history all around the globe, with 99% of all societies being patriarchally based. It is not the only model, but so far, it is the only one that has lasted. Objectively, we have no idea how an egalitarian / feminist societies is going to compete on the global stage. I have seen mountains of anecdotal evidence either way about whether it is helping or harming. In the end, there is a war of ideology being waged right now, everywhere, including the bedroom, and the winner will decide the fate of all of human civilization for the next several hundred years at least.

I have a strong interest in find the side with the facts on it. So far, both the Red Pill and Feminism are falling short.

Firstly, it must be understood that I may or may not personally believe the opinion I am writing.

That's fine, but you're talking a lot of incoherence and I'm trying to get you to spell it out.

While what you said regarding the last 50 years is correct, one can also not forget the last several thousand years of human history all around the globe, with 99% of all societies being patriarchally based.

Are you familiar with the Stanford Prison Experiment? If so, look it up. Consider that the male advantage of strength is enough to establish a default power dynamic within certain contexts.

The important part of what I just said is that NONE OF IT HAS TO DO WITH PSYCHOLOGY. The Stanford Prison Experiment was gender-blind: the point was that a human being with power over another will abuse them. This suffices, all on its own, to explain patriarchy, and that power dynamic is being dismantled.

I'm not sure you realize what an uphill battle you've got to climb here: you're claiming that patriarchy and gender roles are innate and "natural" when that has been claimed over and over again, in a thousand ways, to justify female oppression. And females keep proving that rationale to be wrong over and over again when they're given the opportunity to do so.

You're also claiming that all patriarchies were identical which, demonstrably, they were not. Gender roles, and conceptions of masculinity, differed tremendously throughout history.

Consider that in the 18th century, women were not believed to have the sensitivity or emotional capacity to write poetry. Men were the ones of ardent feeling.

Consider that men have flip-flopped, throughout history, from being the "civilizers" of feral women to the "wild men" civilized themselves by domesticating feminine influences. Which is it? Guess what the common denominator was there? Only whether being "wild and close to nature" or "civilized and rational" was the preferred value by the culture. The common denominator is the power structure, not the values used to justify the structure.

These are just a few examples of the total rationalizing-hamster shenanigans that have been pulled to justify patriarchy.

While what you said regarding the last 50 years is correct, one can also not forget the last several thousand years of human history all around the globe, with 99% of all societies being patriarchally based.

Yes, we do. To use your own blunt generalizing instruments: are we doing better than Iran here or what?

I appreciate the frank response.

I believe the sexual order would be argued to be the sexual strategy from which the rest of modern, successful civilizations use to garner strength and power from their populations. Traditionalists would make this argument. I have a hard time disagreeing, even if it makes me a bit uneasy. Look at the might and power of Western civilization. On the grand scale of history this is insane...I'm typing on a damned magical device for God's sake!

I exaggerate a bit, but the argument that the masculine values that built all that we now enjoy are dismissed and newer ideas like male submission are the stuff of danger, and that they are aberrant as they do not lead to "the best outcomes."

Edit: The inversion of from to form was driving me crazy. Fixed.

What are "masculine values," and how are they intrinsically linked to men?

I'm warning you in advance this is a trap question. I know a lot about history. I know a lot about how conceptions of masculinity, even as linked to the military, fluctuated wildly between cultures.

I've heard pretty much this same argument (sans TRP buzzwords) from someone who was a self-proclaimed "male supremacist" before.

The evidence doesn't seem to support it though. While a lot of women enjoy being sexually submissive, many of those same women enjoy being dominant as well (so they're "switches"). There was a post on PPD about this recently with a study to back it up.

And of course there's the simple fact that dominance and submission in its explicit form is often only sexual in relationships, and what people enjoy sexually is often very different to what they enjoy outside of a sexual context. For example the CEO who goes to a dominatrix is very much dominant in day to day life but enjoys being dominated sexually. This is a lot more common than you'd think.

[–]YeahaNSFWaccount 2 points2 points2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Thank you for the response.

I've heard this argument before, that the not-at-all-uncommon of phenomena of men visiting dominatrixes is indicative of the ability to compartmentalize the sexual and non-sexual dominance in their life. I don't doubt that's possible. It does lead me to wonder thought, about those individuals who are not so compartmentalized. What of the persons who see submission as an aspect of personality, or part of an identity, or lifestyle? Are they doomed to be used (and not in a good way?) What I know of TRP seems to indicate that the male would have no ability to show any form of true strength in the relationship, so long term he would be infinitively replaceable, or kept around as a cuckold. Now that I think about it, cuckolding is rather common in that lifestyle?

A thought I have right now is that I would love to crosspost this to /r/bdsmcommunity but I strongly suspect I would be drawn and quartered...

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

/r/BDSMcommunity is pretty strongly feminist and the mods censor non-feminist views so you wouldn't get much of a balanced response I'm afraid.

What of the persons who see submission as an aspect of personality, or part of an identity, or lifestyle? Are they doomed to be used (and not in a good way?)

If you are submissive as a lifestyle you're usually the kind of person who enjoys being used. But in any kind of D/s dynamic there needs to be limits set. In the case of what you're talking about, if the woman is going too far in treating the man as her submissive it's up to the man to tell her not to do that, and if that doesn't happen he should dump her. Not all female dominants are out to take advantage of men in ways they don't enjoy. I wouldn't even say a majority are.

Now that I think about it, cuckolding is rather common in that lifestyle?

Yep but again only as a fetish carried out consensually with agreed limits. The scenario you describe sounds like it's carried out in a way the man doesn't enjoy, which is whole different kettle of fish.

[–]MissPearlEditor of frequent typos.2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Most BDSM communities outside of some fringe Gorean type ones tend to be very knee jerk about gender because they seek to distinguish themselves by the consent aspect. If it's a matter of a sexual orientation, not the natural order of things it's easier to discuss your desires in that sort of context.

The "BDSM" culture is feminist, because the "lifestyle" attracts the kind of women who are desperate to keep their submission "in the bedroom" - hence, the reason why feminists are so attracted to "housewife" blogs and "satirize" traditional women.

Most women are a little subbie, but have no need to act out a "kink." It's extremely similar to the closeted gay men who pose as "homophobes" "outside the bedroom."

You know, everyone can see it but them.

[–]YeahaNSFWaccount 1 points1 points1 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Indeed. There is a reason I posted here :-)

I have to wonder about how TRP sees the world, rather cynically, (not saying that's wrong) that they would say that the malesub, who is not just involving a Friday night fantasy, is setting themselves up for failure, on the average? That the nature of female sexual desire would be inherently somewhat repulsed, even by those that have an interest in dominance, as the basic biological checking mechanism for male mate suitability would kick in. I am suspecting the science just isn't there to fully answer my questions yet.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

TRP is pretty strict on following the "natural order" of gender roles so yeah, I'm guessing they'd have trouble with men who are lifestyle subs and would make the claim they're just turning away women. Of course the reason they invented so many buzzwords is so they don't have to actually say that outright.

[–]YeahaNSFWaccount 1 points1 points1 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Indeed.

I really hate it when, in the end, the whole answer to this thing boils down to faith....faith in the goodness of people, or in cynical realism.

On one hand, "regular society." All are equal and good people don't intentional screw over others. Communicate your desires, find those compatibility and live your life on those terms.

/r/TheRedPill The sexes are different and desire different things. Communication is largely telling the submissive (women) what you want and if she doesn't follow, next. Live your life by reality, not fantasy and deal with it.

Yep. The problem really is that it's all very religious. This is why you see a lot of confirmation bias in TRP and SJW communities. People don't want facts, they want facts that confirm their existing worldviews.

I don't think anyone who thinks they are a doormat is bound for good things, regardless of sex. Certainly anyone trying a M/f dynamic from surrender oriented RPW to your average kinkster is pretty quick to announce either "Only Captain/Master!" or "Not a push over!"

edit

Now that I think about it, cuckolding is rather common in that lifestyle?

In practice, the hilarious problem is generally that the putative hot wife (and would be cuck) tends to be pissed at the poor quality of bulls, since there are a lot less sane, healthy attractive men looking for casual sex than porn would have you believe (particularly ones that get off on another guy being involved). It happens, but generally when you're into humiliation talk about how unsatisfactory you are its more like that couple that has mock insult fights in gooey cutsie voices.

[–]GridReXXit be like that1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree with the "switch" thing. When I'm in a hetero relationship, I'll play submissive sexually because I don't mind it, but mostly because he prefers it.

However when I'm with women it's a sexually intense back and forth.

I notice that with gay men too. A lot of gay men seem to have very strict sexual roles. He only "tops" or he only "bottoms." "Verses" are hard to come by according to my male gay friends.

Whereas among lesbians, it's not that difficult to find a woman who likes both and likely in one session.

However I will say something controversial for some people...

I can't say I enjoy being overly dominant with a man sexually. I like it in passing or as a one-off, but not as a norm.

However with women I don't mind if I'm submissive with her or extremely dominant with her on a regular basis. It's sexy when she's both, but not so sexy to me when he's regularly submissive sexually.

So TRP has a point there.

However when it comes to life and roles in the house, I'm not into anyone dominating me in that sense. Not into being a "lifestyle" submissive. I have way too much spirit for that.

[–]powerkickPoly, Bi, Blue, Betafag3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Male sexual submission...completely incompatible with TRP concepts.

That there is the key. TRP's pseudoscience then says exactly what the rest of that paragraph says, which is basically fearmongering. "If you aren't dominant in bed, you aren't attractive in bed." Also, there's probably some homophobia mixed in with that baseless assertion. "Why would a guy want to be DOMINATED, that's so FAGGY." I can hear it now.

Obviously, you can be a commanding officer in the military and submissive in bed and seriously nobody could be the wiser if you never talk about it. Nothing changes about the relationship with regards to the kind of sex you're having, unless you WANT it to be so tied in with the relationship dynamics itself (I.e. 24/7 bdsm relationship)

This results in a lack of true sexual desire on the part of a woman...

Fucking source? There is no proof in any medium or any case that results in "AWALT therefore they disrespect men if they show submissive tendencies in the bedroom.

[–]xb5561 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think it's interesting that you feel the need to use the example of a military officer when talking about male submission. It's as if a man still needs to prove his traditional manliness before anyone might even consider accepting his sexually submissive nature. I've noticed this before; most people reject male submission outright, while some allow for some leeway in the case of "dominant by day, submissive by night" types. However, a man who is purely submissive? Unthinkable, apparently.

[–]powerkickPoly, Bi, Blue, Betafag0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, I agree, I'm just using the dichotomy in that point to drive home that anyone can be submissive or whatever in bed really and not have it affect the world the way TRP seems to think it does.

[–]twopumpkins1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Anecdotal, but I know a Woman (very well) who is a professional dominatrix. Her best clients are pretty much as 'alpha' as you can get. CEOs, surgeons, high-ranking police officers etc. They like to relinquish the control they have to maintain at all times in their 'real' lives.

[–]MissPearlEditor of frequent typos.4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago* (9 children) | Copy Link

Male submission is generally a sexual fetish and has no bearing on a guy's social role in relation to the opposite sex. It's perfectly possible to have this kink and be unpleasantly entitled and pushy. For example one of the complaints from "lifestyle" female dominants dealing with come ons from submissive men who frequent professionals (sex workers) is that they're not typically interested in power exchange on her terms, but expect to be serviced according to his fantasy.

There are thus a lot of problems in nailing down just what msub is, because it tends to be a big grab bag of fetishes including many things that are only inherently submissive in the context of a person's belief around the act. For example strapon sex is a porn standard, but considerably less easy or pleasurable than a blow job- the former being physically awkward and having no nerve endings on your dildo, while the latter involves coaxing a man to put his most sensitive bits next to your sharpest ones.

Although there are some who see their interest in msub as a matter of female supremacy, these are by far the minority- for the most part kinky folk are pretty damn banal in their daily lives. Male submission fantasies seem pretty evenly scattered through the population.

Expressions of kink, purely looking at power exchange, range from wanting to be looked after through to wanting to find the most dominant woman in the room and claim her devotion to them. This can mean anything from going all floppy and helpless to acting like a poorly chained force of nature.

A casual survey of romance archetypes shows that male vulnerability and monomaniacal devotion are a common ingredient in these fantasy stories- not suggesting that many thematic elements found in m-sub are going to be rejected. A classic example of this sort of fictional msub scenario popular with women might be the romance in Jane Eyre.

Of course it's worth making a distinction between female dominants and male submissives, since any given pair from each category won't automatically be compatible, and as with all things, your average female dominant is to her porn archetype what your average woman is to her vanilla porn counterpoint- but discussions on the subject tend to be short on discussions of the so called lifestyle.

[–]YeahaNSFWaccount 1 points1 points1 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Much appreciated for the response!

Regarding female supremacy; I can see how this would be a minority. I also understand that most people within BDSM are not looking to mess with another person outside of their limits. I do wonder about the more "regular" world. I mean, perhaps this is cynical, but does it not seem likely that is a male submissive shows up to a more or less "average" woman, that it is not within her own best sexual interests to use him as a set of rresources and go have fun on the side? I think that this is a common experienced shared on /r/TheRedPill and a massive source of modern male anger.

Basically, I understand in theory, if the planets align and the stars are just right and so on....that if you do find the right person within the multitude of humanity, a woman that can be trusted with such great power over a man, that is is wonderful to those men that are seeking it. However, I can't deny the idea that the submissive man is setting himself up to fail?

Basically, I suspect TRP would state that by not showing that kind of vulnerability, given that it already is rare and a turn off to millions of women, that the best strategy of a man would be to never go down the submissive path to begin with.

[–]MissPearlEditor of frequent typos.0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Basically, I suspect TRP would state that by not showing that kind of vulnerability, given that it already is rare and a turn off to millions of women, that the best strategy of a man would be to never go down the submissive path to begin with.

There's an entire school of advice for women about keeping a mystery alive by never letting him see you without makeup, etc...

It's fucking nuts. All humans are fragile, fallible beings. A relationship that can't survive a weekend of food poisoning and so forth is about as real as a hallucination and stable as a soviet run chemical plant.

The trade off you're talking about is one that happens to a lot of submissive men- they decide initially to suppress their kinks and chase certain vanilla over uncertain kink. Then they encounter what they're looking for after the fact, after they've invested in the former and that's how my inbox gets full of plaintive "My wife doesn't understaaaaand".

I used to get pissed at these men for taking me for granted, like I'd want to be someone's bit on the side, but over time I developed a bit of sympathy- a lot of these guys were just trying to be loved or get some experience and then stuck it out with the first place they landed. Certainly not every relationship I tried was kinky in its motivation. I had to find myself too, and lord knows I had enough loyalty I would have sacrificed sexual satisfaction if the guys in question hadn't disqualified themselves for other reasons.

Of course being a unicorn for a particular kind of man has its issues, for example the ones who tie themselves to Vanilla and then finding no hand pulling the rope pursue us, are still no fun when they go into a guilt spiral about how they left a good girl for their kink or hate on themselves for not being masculine/good enough or desirable when you're all "um, I'm a good girl too and I think you're beautiful".

Although these are unicorn problems, so I also kind of accept that for a sub guy hearing us whine about being so desired might in itself suck.

Thank you for your response.

Are you making the mistake that is often brought up here re: thinking submissive = stupid/brainwashed? What makes you think a submissive man being used by a woman who doesn't give two fucks about him is any less likely to notice this than a non-submissive man?

Well, one trope you see often over in TRP land is the same version of a very old story. The guy is working the hours keeping things going economically and gets sick, or injured or some event such as that. The moment that occurs, divorce papers are brought out. No prior warning. The sheer number of these stories seems lend credence to the concept of there being a certain provider/status element to many relationships, and once that element is gone, turns out the guy was just disposable after all. The term is even called "male disposeability. It certainly seems that throughout history men have been able to be very blind to it, especially now with the way relationships can so easily be broken up. Given the extremely trusting nature of submissive relationships, it seems that this is a larger risk than ever before, for subs of any gender.

Consequently, we may not be able to consciously choose our sexual desires, but I bet most people have more than one sexual interest, and could always consciously choose to engage only that which lends more likely to the best results.

Perhaps money was their sole contribution to the relationship. Like how red pillers say the only important thing about women is the sex and they would dump her if she stopped providing it.

Perhaps if they were also emotionally engaged or friends with their spouse, this would not occur.

[–]Old_Pine_Tree 3 points3 points3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Sexual dimorphism suggests this at a general level, but when reduced to individuals will not always hold. There is the added distinction that descriptive qualities are not necessarily interpretive or prescriptive ones. Think of this as the 'is-ought' problem applied to the sexual marketplace.

What TRP asserts that if you are dominant or seek dominance in keeping with this generalization, then apply steps A, B, C, etc. What's often lost in this prescription is that these steps can be applied non-sexually to other men, or can be applied by dominant women to submissive men.

[–]YeahaNSFWaccount 1 points1 points1 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

TRP asserts that if you are dominant or seek dominance in keeping with this generalization, then apply steps A, B, C, etc.

Interesting. This seems to imply that if the individual is not already, or is not seeking dominance, then it stands to reason that certain options are not available to him. So, this the asks the question of what options in life are off the table to the submissive male? On the flipside, what does this mean to the dominant female?

On the non-sexual element with other men, it implies that elements of TRP can apply to other sectors of life, such as professional or business relationships.

Thank you for the response.

You are very welcome.

I haven't given much thought to the plight of the submissive male. I guess this depends on whether he is willingly or unwillingly submissive, and whether his submissiveness is absolute or contextual (e.g. powerful executive by day, ball-gagged by night).

As for the woman, her plight is whether she is satisfied with submissive men, or whether she wants to compete with a dominant man. TRP would say she has to bring more to the table in the case of the latter, because our dominant man likely enjoys more abundance and has a lower, or perhaps more critical threshold for what he perceives as her 'bullshit'.

And finally, yeah, I believe RP principles are applicable to many facets in life. Just look at how millennials typically refer to their careers as their 'passion', as one example.

In this I'd say there's a point as far as bedroom dominance and acting the part. Humans only have so many ways to do a thing, and sometimes what is being fetishized is a particular cluster of behaviors and symbols.

For example my Gentleman is perfectly good at dominant body language. I am sexually attracted to making him "break frame" in TRP terms- he can stare down the average guy, but I can stare him down. In practice we had to negotiate around this- it's not supposed to be competitive or interfere with Real Life (TM).

In the most cynical terms, our romantic relationship is stable due to MAD- we both feel we got the best possible deal so destructive behaviours would be suicide. In the context of the bedroom there's room for game playing, but the backbone of it is a tentative escalation of trust caused by mutual investment.

As for how "alpha" he is, that's a really subjective question because according to me he's the best man evah. Its kind of like trying to answer the question of your own attractiveness- but suffice to say I think there are other good men who are better fits for other women, but this one is MINE and causes me to feel both protectively nurturing and aggressive in a way other men do not.

I don't have too much to say to this apart from the fact that I am happy the two of you have found a balance and are making it work. Out of curiosity, where would you say you land on the pill spectrum (I don't follow individual users very closely)?

Effectively bluer than a Greek sky. I'm a feminist and he enjoys reading over my shoulder while I purple it up or asking if I'm "calling red pill people stupid again" to which I put on a cutsey voice, point at my laptop and go "shtupid! shtupid! shtupid!" or make little flaily hands like I have claws. I'm much more conflict oriented than him- I like arguments, he hates them, so sees my debate hobby as incomprehensible but adorable

He was initially nervous about my feminism until I made it clear I knew I was a battle ax and did not require him to agree or identify that way, just respect my ability to reach conclusions. He's warmed up to the idea when he learned from experience the respect goes both ways- I can be wrong and called on it, without it being a huge emotional fuss.

I agree with the people have already pointed that it's not wise to deal in absolutes when it comes to sexual behaviour, and that submissive behaviour sexually doesn't automatically mean that you're a doormat outside the bedroom (I'm a sub, and I'm definitely not,) and just want to add being open about sexual submissiveness as a man can actually be a lot more attractive than trying to hide it and fail.

To put it in a non-sexual context, most of us have seen how uncomfortable someone who isn't a natural to leadership makes the people around them when they either don't know what they're doing, or try to overcompensate by exerting a power that they don't command over the people they're leading.

It's not that different if you're in a relationship with someone and they know you well, as they'll be able to tell if you're uncomfortable with the role you're performing, and chances are that your lack of satisfaction will begin to bleed into life outside the bedroom eventually. Uncertainty like that is going to lead to more discontent on your partner's side than if you'd just been upfront in the first place and told them what you wanted.

A part of being the sort of person who commands respect, either from your partner or the world at large, is being able to pursue and get what you want. Owning submissive sexual desires and expressing them to your partner in a confident and assertive manner is more attractive than someone who tries to emulate sexually dominant behaviour without feeling it and fails.

Greatly appreciate the response.

Some thoughts...

Valid argument, but the ability to lead can be learned. I believe TRP would say that the ability to dominate can be learned.

Owning submissive sexual desires and expressing them to your partner in a confident and assertive manner is more attractive than someone who tries to emulate sexually dominant behaviour without feeling it and fails.

I can understand this in theory, however wouldn't TRP state that the submissive is not showing the elements of power that would show them to be a successful mate, on an evolutionarily advantaged level. It's not conscious, and as such, not able to be "turned off."

If you don't mind, what would your experience, or of those you know, tell you as to the validity of this statement?

I believe TRP would say that the ability to dominate can be learned.

You may be able to learn to emulate it, but can you really learn to enjoy it? I know that if I had to be the Dom for my partner, even if I was able to do so functionally, that I'd end up frustrated and unfulfilled if I never got the chance to do what I enjoyed, and not being able to express my desires would run the risk of poisoning my relationship. I'd imagine that plenty of other subs feel the same.

wouldn't TRP state that the submissive is not showing the elements of power that would show them to be a successful mate, on an evolutionarily advantaged level.

I don't agree with TRP's adherence to what many present as the dominant narrative of EvoPsych (I'm a big proponent of social learning theory myself,) but even if I did, sexual submission does not inherently challenge the sub's power within a relationship.

In some D/s scenarios, particularly those that involve restraint or resistance, it's the Dom doing all the work to please or satisfy the sub. Given this, and the fact that use of safewords and setting of boundaries is primarily (though by no means exclusively) the domain of the sub, the actual balance of power over a scene often lies with them.

In terms of personal experience, I'm gay so the F/m dynamic isn't one I'm familiar with myself, but partner's bisexual and a Dom, and has been in relationships with switch women before, and while it wasn't his cup of tea he's never mentioned the dynamics of the day to day relationship being any different to what he's used to. Also, he hasn't given me a run down of specific past relationships, but I know that he's never been the one being broken up with, only the breaker upper, so I'd assume from that that he managed to keep most of them satisfied just fine.

"Can you really learn to enjoy it?" was a question I thought about when I read dating advice about how a guy needs to be aggressive, dominant, etc. I came to the conclusion that even if I could learn to do all that stuff, I still wouldn't like it, and would only be doing it because that's what was expected of me. I think it's odd that TRP-style advice has a strong tone of "don't act servile toward women" and then proceeds to tell you that you must do this, this, and this because that's what women want you to do. It doesn't matter if you hate doing it or if it goes against your nature; women demand it, so you must provide it. It seems contradictory to the "male empowerment" ethos.

Relevant question along the lines of this theme - If you are a red pill man with a lady and you get mugged, what do you do?

Did he get mugged by the lady? Mean! :(

Realistically? Give up your wallet, while doing your best to remain in control of the situation. Yes, you're losing a few hundred bucks to this slimeball because he happens to have a knife right now, but that doesn't invert the overall power situation, you're still a wealthy middle class man and he's still a slimeball.

This, or if i'm drunk, do what I did last time, 1. Hit him with a budweiser bottle 2. Wonder why said bottle won't break. 3. Kick him, threaten to stab him with his own knife, kick him some more. 4. Feel bad/pity, leave, throw knife down drain.

[–]taiboworksrational idealism > toxic egoism-4 points-3 points-2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

some wealthy middle class men are slimeballs too. what exactly makes the mugger a slimeball? his breaking the law? because taking advantage of people with less power than you is part of the game of dominance. is that only bad when a law is broken?

Yes.

I have at one point in the past been sitting in a therapists office, and I have on multiple occasions had the photons of a therapist reflected off my eyeballs.

Relevance?
