Man, I have an uncle who was very well off and owned his own company. He cheated on his wife with his secretary (how cliché). Wife finds out, goes to divorce him. He doesn’t wanna pay any alimony or child support (she was a SAHM and they had 4 kids so I presume it was quite a lot) so he put the entire company and all his properties in his mistresses name. He puts all his money into her account. The mistress liquidates all his properties, sells his company and just fucking disappears with all his money. This happened like 10 years ago and he’s moved back in with his mother and is the butt of all family jokes.

I thought he was the pettiest, dumbest man I’ve ever met but now I think this guy in the article takes the cake. At least my uncle thought his 20 year old girlfriend actually did love him and would keep his money safe. This idiot straight up went broke so he wouldn’t have to give money to his kids. I can’t imagine an evolutionary drive where a father would want to burn his kid’s resources. Evolution tends to make us want our offspring to have the best chances of survival and reproduction. These are men who subconsciously realise they are so worthless that they go out of their way to be genetic dead ends. Harming your kids is self sabotage and comes from a deep place of self hatred

In his mind he’s sacrificing for a higher ideal. Same reason someone would risk their fortune or life in a war, give most of it away to charity or jump on a grenade for their comrades.

The evolutionary drive in question is nobility, ie ability to abstract ones tribal instincts to encompass a larger group. Men with this drive are able to act not only in the interest of themselves or their immediate family, but all the men who live nearby who might be made financial cucks against their will.

The descendants of men with this instinct currently rule the earth, because a tribe of warriors united and fighting for a higher purpose will grind down those that are easily scattered into a swarm of powerless individuals. A civilization whose members will set their own lands (or in this case, money) on fire to starve out an invading army will outlast the weaker neighboring states whose members would sooner submit.

In an actual fight to the death, 2000 year old greco roman style stoic intransigence, even in the face of annihilation defeats the short sighted, decline-enjoying, nihilistic individualism of TRP every time. Its an instinct that goes all the way back to the chimp that went berserk and shat on his own bananas rather than let Chad Silverback have them. Sure he got ripped apart for his troubles, but then the ape decided maybe chimps are too much trouble to fuck with and picked on bonobos instead.

1000000 years later, humanity still owes much to that first unreasonable little fucker that stood up to the government.

While I do not know the specifics, when relationships break down a non-trivial portion of women become intent on destroying their ex totally. This is then countered with this kind of scorched earth response. So while I don't condone it, I can understand how people find themselves in this situation.

Possible scenarios: A) He actually did it, B) He didn't, but is actually thinking he can get away with this and C) He didn't and is just contrarian.

A) It's the equivalent of the squandering of resources on a religious ritual. A display of being able to just throw away resources for no apparent purpose to raise status. Which, of course, also tells us that he felt just that threatened by the divorce. In his mind, or what passes for that, the money is gone anyway, without any gain in status to be had. So this is actually economically sound, just in a different economy.

B) He's a fully developed narcissist, possibly with some other stuff co-morbid with the NPD. He cannot fathom to not be able to get everybody to buy into his deceit. The divorce is an insult to his grandiosity and punishment needs to enacted somehow. I said co-morbid before and my guess is with antisocial personality disorder. It creates a certain discrepancy here, that prevented him to actually go through with it in a bout of narcissistic rage. The money in itself is too valuable to the psychopathic (to use the older, less cumbersome terminology) side of him, so this is his delusional compromise. Basically a Mini-Trump. It's an entirely dysfunctional and unhealthy variant of an ego-defense mechanism nevertheless, so there's your evolutionary angle. One that got triggered very early on and has been running ever since, in all likelihood. This is just the latest manifestation.

C) He's off his rocker, plain and simple. Couldn't touch reality with a yard-long stick with an over-sized glove on the end. Wouldn't be the first man to loose it over a divorce, won't be the last. He's desperately trying to reassure himself of still being in control in a threatening situation and that's more important than the inevitable fallout, since this is right now and his brain is running in full immediate survival mode, while any consequences are... well, at the very least not right now. Getting himself in a state where he FEELS he can deal with it is all that counts. It's another and actually less dysfunctional self-defense mechanism at work here. While this seems much more destabilized than B), it's actually not quite as bad. In our evolutionary environment this isn't dysfunctional entirely. The sabre-tooth tiger is a more urgent issue than what you'll eat once you got away from it safely. It's just miss-firing here, but the brain behind it doesn't show signs of living in a solipsistic bubble for ages, just of an acute problem.

He's very stupid to throw the money away. It could be used for the child's college or something like that. If I didn't want to pay my spouse I'd get the money converted to gold or silver and hide it in many places.
