I want to say thanks to thegolddawg for recommending The Slight Edge. It’s a good book. This post is much more about intermittent fasting than it is about The Slight Edge. Little disclaimer: I’m not an expert on fasting. I’m wanting to try it out and this post is explaining why. If there is a Red Pill subreddit dedicated to self improvement, health, fitness, or lifestyle, please mention it in the comments.
I began reading The Slight Edge last night and this morning I went over to the library to continue reading it. However, as soon as I reached the library, I noticed that I was hungry and started wondering if there might be a place nearby to grab something to eat. I don’t think if it wasn’t for me deciding to read The Slight Edge that I would have saw this as an issue. Hunger tends to be bothersome in our everyday lives. It dictates what we can accomplish and when to accomplish it. Although I’ve only read some of The Slight Edge the night before, I get the impression that it’s about making small decisions that over time yield significant effects. Although the book is about how people can reach success with this method, it is also about the opposite: how people over time make habitual consequential decisions that they overlook that result in their demise.
Looking at how hunger, and more so our dietary decisions, affect our everyday lives, I believe the typical consensus of the past decade or so has marketed us, western society, to eat six small meals a day. Prior to the most previous decades, it was three large meals a day. After taking a glance at the idea of intermittent fasting, every day is comprised of two very large meals; usually described as feasts. More than being defined by the quantity of meals, intermittent fasting is typically defined by the time period of not eating. Eating is usually compressed in 8 hour periods. For the other 16 hours, the person who is fasting is not to eat.
I just looked up intermittent fasting this morning so I’m not an expert in the act of fasting. On the several websites I looked up, I found that there are not only physical benefits but also mental benefits too. I’m more so fixed on the time aspect of it and how enacting long periods of fasting will yield higher productivity. From one site, it says that the reason people feel hungry in the morning is mostly habitual. If it’s possible to control that hunger to a point where one could still be fully functional, then I’ll have a period of uninterrupted time to be more productive. Today, people are getting into the habit of eating six times a day. Unless people are eating with one hand while continuously working on whatever they’re working on, it is my guess that the act of eating these meals takes about an hour out for each meal; optimistically speaking, it would be 30 minutes to an hour. Every time someone eats, they have to make the choice to eat what they want to eat, go to a private place where they want to eat, line up or cook or microwave something, and then come back and get motivated to continue working. Just looking at this can make one realize how the power of six meals a day dictates what people can accomplish with their time. On the other hand, if I learn to fast, I am capable of being productive on an empty stomach, and my day isn’t dictated by the frequency in which my body has become accustomed to eating.
I was hoping to get some feedback if possible. What are people allowed to consume during the fasting period of every day? I heard tea is fine. I also heard juice is fine on some level. I also wanted to see if anyone had any experience with intermittent fasting. How long does it take to become habitual, and do you still currently take part in it?
