So this is a spin off discussion to this thread that sparked an interesting debate:

There was some discussion about whether pro-life or pro-choice men make better fathers and partners.

For the record, this sub is staunchly Pro-choice, but when it comes to vetting men who have opinions on either side, I’m not sure it’s clean cut as to who immediately has the moral high ground, so let’s discuss!

Pro-choice Men

Altruistic reasons:

  • Believe in a woman’s right to choose and have autonomy over her own body

  • Anti government regulation of personal healthcare choices

  • Concerned about the health impacts and life quality of unwanted pregnancy on future children

Selfish Reasons:

  • Shirk child support/abandon fatherhood
  • devalue the mental, physical, emotional impact of both pregnancy and abortion
  • Misogynist or Racist eugenics - (i.e. like abortion because they are prejudiced against certain people)

Pro-Life Men

Altruistic reasons:

  • Concerns about the genocide of “undesirable” babies (I.e. selective abortions targets kids with disabilities, poor and minority kids, or female babies)

  • Concerns about society/government devaluing human life and pushing women to abort as a first option

  • They take the responsibility of fatherhood very seriously

Selfish reasons:

  • Control women’s bodies
  • Punish “sluts” for having sex
  • Force women to be back in the kitchen and/or financially dependent on men
