The best weapon is using your attackers bulk against them, so I second/third a self defense class. Remember that everything can be a weapon if need be, and it’s entirely plausible to run to a stranger for help: that cashier behind the counter, the random old lady, hell even banging on a random door increases your chances for help rather than decreasing.

Also, it probably doesn’t need to be said but I’ll say it anyway, stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. If something doesn’t feel right, fuck politeness with a cactus and demand whatever will make you feel safer. Ignore anyone who tries to call you paranoid or unreasonable; it’s your safety, potentially your life on the line. There’s no such thing as too much.

ALWAYS glance in the back of your car before getting in.

Carry a mini air horn.

Park in open well lit areas whenever possible.

Leave enough room between your car and the car in front of you for you to turn and drive away if they stop/get out.

Acts like mace. legal to carry. If you ever use it, cops don't give a shit, they're more likely to give you a thumbs up than arrest you.

Always do a self defence class. Its so so so useful to know how to get rid of a way heavier and taller attacker without having much Power yourself. Also most importantly: dont try to fight. Run away. Dont try to finish him.

What about those little keychain alarms? They're soooo loud. Not for self defence but could scare them off.

I'm in Australia and you can get capsaicin cream like zostrix - if you felt someone creeping up on you, you could put it on your fingertips and then gauge their eyes with it. I imagine that'd suck. It can't be illegal to carry because it's over the counter for topical pain relief. The burning sensation is thought to numb nerve signals with longer term use, and there are higher strength ones

I haven't dealt with being attacked by a stranger. but if its someone you know being extremely aggressive, and abusive, I have found several tactics that help. For example, standing behind them. forces them to turn around to talk to you. which breaks their assumption of dominance. I've also had a good response, standing on furniture, high up. because this forces them to look up at you. which subconsciously makes them feel like a child.

The goal is to waste their energy. because it's all adrenaline. which requires a ton of momentum to keep going. if you can delay them, waste their time, or make it less satisfying to come at you in any way. that's what I would do. Conserve your own energy, I feel like that is the best strategy.

If you have a best friend, close with a family member anyone you trust get the life 360 app so you can watch each other. This has saved people before. Also I use bear spray and no one expects anyone to use that shit. Never walk with your headphones loud in your ears. You can keep them in to make someone let their guard down. I've tricked two people who thought I was listening to music to turn on a lit block hail a cab and poof. Get a Swiss army knife. Find out what is legal size you can walk with a pocket knife. If you can legally get a gun do that too.

Do not fight unless you have to. There was a thread here that I agreed with 1000% that unless the man is super skinny and untrained chances of you winning against a large dude is slim. I've fought with men simply cause they are pigs and have zero respect and I don't use my hands ever. I take anything near me an clobber their ass like Bam Bam.

Be smart, stay safe.

Look into your countries weapons law. In Germany owning pepper spray as defense against humans is not allowed, but owning it as defense against animals and using it on a human attacker is legal.

Also fighting knifes are often prohibited, but maybe you just "borrowed" that kitchen knife from a friend and it's in your purse and now that you've been attacked, you just panicked and used it to defend yourself.

A big Umbrella can also be used, but they can be inconvenient and will look a little weird in the summer.

Knives under a certain length are legal. Learn how to use short knives and make sure you're willing to, or else it'll be used against you. Edit: Obviously check this in relation to your country.

The first and most important thing to keep yourself safe is situational awareness. No amount of any martial arts training will help you if in an emergency situation you'll start to panic and freeze. So first thing first - learn this, then move to the anything else.

Pepper spray is the godsend thing, if it's illegal there's always some variation of bear spray or dog spray, that is usually even better - learn how to use it properly. This stuff does no permanent damage and wears off pretty quickly, so no one will report that to the police - the person will be absolutely fine in 10 minutes so not much to report about. There are gel-based ones that can be used in crowded surroundings, which is the best option since you can use them pretty much anywhere and they are very precise. The next best thing is a jet spray, they deliver concentrated flow of liquid in the precise direction. Fog sprays are something used against the big amount of people and generally effect is very light. Always check your spray before relying on it and carry at least two of them with you - you don't want to get into situation when your spray doesn't goes off, speaking from experience here. And also be aware that drunk people and people on drugs may not feel its effect, because their brain blocks pain and makes them acting completely reckless.

Knife is also very effective, but !!! learn how to use it properly. When I started knife fighting classes I heard a lot about people attacking someone with a knife and dealing minimal to no damage since making a proper cut is not that simple. Don't try to poke anyone with it since it's often classified as an attempted murder even if you don't aim at any vital organs. Cuts are more acceptable, since it is presumed that it's not that easy to make a lot of damage with it. If you're going against someone with a weapon, aim for hands - that will make them drop it and make it hard for them to fight further. Also you can make a horizontal cut on a forehead, that will make blood flow directly in attacker's eyes and disrupt their vision.

And do not forget about using your surroundings: a sharp stone or a neck from a broken glass bottle will make a great weapon to defend yourself with.

Best tip is aim to seriously injure or even kill if you think this guy intends to hurt or kidnap you. Don’t treat it like a boxing match. The guy will have his guard down only long enough to give you one chance. Use it wisely. Aim to gouge out his eyes or puncture his throat. If you fail and can’t get away you’re fucking done.

In my country most weapons are banned and even improvised weapons can get you in trouble if you were carrying them with the intent to use them that way, so you need another good reason to have them with you. Swiss army knives or multitools would be easy for a lot of people to explain, especially if they could be useful for your job. Ingrown hair tweezers are very sharp and a lot of people wouldn't consider it strange for a woman to carry tweezers around. You could also use a heavy glass water bottle as a blunt object.

Stay away from any bullshido martial arts if you are gonna take up martial arts for self defense. Shit like Aikido, Kung fu, Krav Maga etc are scams. Either take up something that is proven to work like mma or one of the styles used in it like kickboxing, muay tai, boxing, wrestling, bjj, or judo.

Also do strength training and try and gain some mass. Size and strength matter a lot in fighting so if you weight like 120 pounds and can’t even bench press the bar the average guy will still probably beat you up even if you have been training for a while.

I didn't save it but I wonder if anyone who saw it did, there was a great post on tumblr all about the best ways to fuck a man up by going for the balls. It was very detailed. There were diagrams. I think there were statistics!

There were also quotes from men saying like the reason women aren't taught to do this, even in a lot of women's self defence classes, is because it terrifies men to have a weakness over us when in any other way they are stronger than us in a fight. It's really effective.

I think I remember the techniques given, but I wouldn't like to accidentally summarise them wrongly.

Keep in mind that your fingernails, real or fake, are decent temporary weapons and (more importantly) collect DNA from scratches. I remind myself often that I CAN drop the "dont wanna fuck up my nails" hand movements, and use them for self-defense, if need be. They're easy to forget about, but its served me well in the past. I keep those shits long and pointed💪🏻
