I don't think it's a question of "settling on looks" or not; I think it's that if you look at history, the very second women can go unmarried without significant risk of starvation, a statistically-significant minority will want to do so. Making it much more likely that the only people marrying actually want to.

This sub underestimates how common it was for how long for married couples to semi-openly despise each other. You know those boomer comics about husbands and wives hating each other? That genre of "humor" is very old, and has only recently been dying out--good riddance!

The economy is too shitty these days for most men to become a beta provider within a relevant timeframe.

Here's the equation (for in the USA) for the cost of providing for a single mother with children (who are not the beta's):

Total cost = P+C(250,000)+U(240,000)+M+R

P= prerequisites, things like having a car, house, etc. (insert some 6 digit number here)

C= number of children and their cost from 0-18

U= number of children if paying for the college/university education (because otherwise the prior effort is wasted)

M= cost of motherhood, because raising children is a full time job, and also most likely she's unlikely to have a mid/high paying job. (baseline estimated cost being 18 x 50,000)

R= cost of the mother's retirement (because normally single motherhood doesn't come with a pension plan) (baseline estimated cost being 1.96 million)

As everyone can see, the total cost at a minimum will be in the millions of $ at a minimum, which spread over a period of 4 decades for a male would require a high 6 figure income just to be good enough for the average single mother on tinder. Not to mention the career market is so volatile and uncertain that the average male cannot guarantee that level of income for the relevant timeframe, and getting that level of money up front is basically a pipe dream.

I'm not gonna lie, the goal is so impossible I can't even be sour grapes about it.

Women were expected to marry and have children, these were societal rules. There were only so many jobs that would actually hire woman, and many of these early jobs would not pay them adequately enough for them to be financially independent.

This was how society was set up. Women literally depended on men financially in exchange for children, childcare, housecare, submissiveness, etc.

Now, women can become financially independent and no longer need to rely on men. How many women in the 30’s or 40’s put up with abusive, horrible, or just plain toxic men because that was literally their only option. Divorce rates were low because there were not many alternatives. Either be married or broke & ostracized by society.

Women have lots of options now that they have become financially independent from men. Marriage and birth rates are dropping because women finally have the ability to make these choices.

It has certainly lost a lot of its marketpower the last few years/decades.It will never die out though. Women will always need someone to finance their lifestyle. They will just choose BB later and later in life.

The last study I saw linked here says the majority of women still marry a man who makes more than them.

From what I'm seeing irl, women still prefer to relationship the, "looks good on paper" guy.

This whole idea that it's over seems to come or be pushed by STEM lords here who make that bank, but b/c they strike out on Tinder in a major city, (and apparently never even go to a bar or anywhere women are besides work) that women aren't looking for them.

Well I guess they're part right- women aren't going door to door knocking, trying to get them off the PlayStation to give them some dick.

Edit: That said, my gf makes more than I do. But we do have business plans/ideas together of mutual interest.

In a sense, yes.

Ironically you could argue that beta providers were at their peak when parents were calling the shots on marriage and marrying someone out of genuine interest/ attraction was rare, especially for upper class people.

Today people are more often than not taking attraction and compatibility into account to some extent, and I think solely marrying a guy for his money is an overblown concept that applies to a subset of women rather than being the standard today. However the greater freedom to choose and lowered cultural stigma against divorce means more people, even those who were in love initially, second guessing their choices and dealing with that turmoil through infidelity or jumping ship altogether (the concept of the paradox of choice explains this well, though it was originally for financial choices I think).

It was so weird watching a black and white movie where a couple's marriage was obviously over but they couldn't flat-out say they divorced because of moral guidelines. The wife conveniently dies in a car crash offscreen and then the protagonist marries his mistress (Citizen Kane).

Yeah. Women can mostly earn their own money now. Betas still settle down, but the ones with the more alpha qualities than the others do best. A pure beta who has a bunch of money but no attractive alpha qualities is getting passed on by women more and more these days.

Yes. However the main reason why this is happening is because childless unmarried women in their 20s and 30s are outearning childless unmarried men. There are fewer opportunities for beta providers to even happen. Its a numbers game
