Amy is a forever fave. Though some of her music can sound “pick-me” it’s not like Lana level where she romanticizes abuse and neglect. Her music spoke beautifully of the pain of addiction and love, and how those commingle and argue. Her music had themes of obsession and remorse, desire and pain, and all the absolutely human flaws that come with existing as a broken woman searching for a meaning outside of herself. But, I’m a diehard fan so my analysis is p bias. She was as mad as she was brilliant.

If you haven’t seen the documentary Amy by director Asif Kapadia you definitely should. It really highlights so many of her experiences growing up that led to her life turning in this tragic direction. As far as her music I never listened to much, but her songs are pretty driven in the angsty sexy genre. I try not to judge artists on the art so much as their actions, because art you’re selling will follow the mainstream most of the time.

Frank is such a good album. Some of it is genuinely FDS approved. I feel like meeting Blake and also the ongoing torture by her dad exacerbated her pick me tendencies and ultimately led to her own demise.

A few of my faves from that album: stronger than me, help yourself and f**k me pumps.

I don’t think it’s super pick me. It’s more about genuine heartbreak/not being able to make it work and mourning loss. Her story was just so tragic. A lot of her songs are about working through and rising above though. I think we want to put FDS approval stamp on all the music we listen to but Amy could be a gray area. Sometimes things in general are neither approved nor looked down on by FDS it doesn’t all fit into a nice black or white boxes.

In the documentary about her it explains pretty well. She had very low self esteem and self worth, and she was VERY obsessive and codependent in her relationships. Also her dad was an asshole.

I love her music and the dark themes though, I think we can all relate to some extent.

Extremely talented and charismatic, zero self-esteem. A predator latched on and took everything he could. If she'd lived, I suspect she would have continued that pattern for her entire life, because her miserable personal life made big money for a lot of people.

Her music got me through my first real heartache/break up. I was devastated when she died because she never saw her worth.

Her music was her way to express her suffering through addiction, self-destructive behaviour and depression. She just wanted to feel good and tried different things that left her even more broken. One of these things might be related to men, but that's how a lot of self-destructive people are; get attached to things that hurt you and behave in ways that don't make you better.
