The whole idea of AF/BB is based off the notion that women are more attracted to the wild and exciting AF during ovulation and to the BB during menstruation. If this theory is correct, it's beneficial for him to know your cycle.

It's also beneficial for any LTR because a woman likely needs more emotional support (etc) during menstruation and is likely to be more open and willing for sex (and wild sex) during ovulation. It's helpful for the guy to try for wild sex during ovulation and not during menstruation, and to engage in more of the comforting/cuddles during menstruation.

One of the most frustrating things about women for men is her ever changing frame of mind, wills, desires, comforts and moods. Knowing the pattern can be extremely helpful.

OTOH, he may not be interested in keeping track in a specific manner. He may not be interested in keeping track at all. I don't think the men should have to keep track of the cycle, but if they do, it's very useful.

If men really want to know their women, they will keep track of her cycle.

-If a man really wants to know a woman, he will keep track of which shade of concealer she uses.
-If a man really wants to know a woman, he will keep track of which wardrobe drawer she keeps her lingerie in.
-If a man really wants to know a woman, he will keep track of what time of day she shaves her legs.

In my estimation, all of these things are similarly strange. When a man really gets to know a woman, these are perhaps things he will notice over time. But they're all distinctly personal and relate to her own femininity. With the exception, perhaps, of a couple using the family planning method of birth control (*or planning a wee babe), it simply doesn't seem like a necessity for most men to be aware of.
I certainly don't think it should be some sort of rule or guideline for men to live by. How odd.

Should? No, he doesn't have to. But it's nice for couples to share information with each other if both partners are comfortable talking about it.

I knew with my wife if 11 years, and previous gf, for birth control purposes. But it helped me learn a lot more about moods as well

I don't think anyone should be keeping track of your cycle except you. If you two feel comfortable sharing that information, there's obviously nothing wrong with that. And if/when you live with your partner, I feel like it will be pretty difficult for him not to know. But the idea that for a man to "really know" their woman they need to track her cycle? That's obviously ridiculous...

Edited to add: this might be useful if you're trying to have a baby, but that's pretty much it.

I...don't really understand this thread to be honest. Does your man not notice when you're on your period? Do you just beg off sex for a week every month? I wouldn't expect him to know exactly when it's due, but he'd have a rough idea based on, uh, the obvious signs.

I have very severe PMS/early menstruation. Very heavy bleeding and cramps, exceptional mood swings/melancholy, etc. It's really useful for us to discuss as a reminder of what's going on so he doesn't think he's just a terrible partner/I'm a terrible partner for 3-5 days a month.

So it's more so just a comment like "daddy you're not a daddy yet" and he gets it.

We don't speak of it otherwise, none of his beeswax honestly.

I feel like if he was actively tracking my cycle, he's then also actively undermining my job as a woman.

It's control a man has no right to imo.

Yeah, I dont get it, either. I'm born with ovaries, was diagnosed with PCOS about 5 years ago, have struggled with irregular periods most of my life and had debilitatingly-painful cramps ..

.. but I still don't understand what this "mood swing" or "PMS" thing is, other than hearing women use it as an excuse to be a bitch, and men using it as an excuse to dismiss a woman.

Maybe I'm broken.

Or maybe it's because I never used hormonal birth control in my life. I just don't get it.

As for my period, I chart it in my diary (change of diet and better nutrition has helped me make it regular as clockwork now). All my husband has to do is look in there to have an idea when we'll have to lay out the plastic sheets.

That sounds kind of ridiculous. It's not his concern when you're on your period. If he prompts sex during that time of the month, let him know, but otherwise who cares? It's not like he's not allowed to know, but there's no real reason for it. And like you said, sometimes us ladies don't even know when it's coming, so how could we expect men to!? :P

My man is obsessed with science and psychology, and me, plus he works in health care. At first it disturbed me that he'd been keeping track of mine better than I do. I always tried to hide it from him because, aside from it being my private business, I am deeply ashamed of how gross I am, after growing up around guys who told me we women are, who seem to hate women's bodies. I thought he'd think I'm disgusting. But instead he told me:

*nothing about me could ever disgust him

*he loves any indication that I'm healthy

*and anyway, straight men think gross bodily functions are great (then he farted and said, "see?")

*and if they don't they're wimpy shrieking little girls that can't handle reality and prefer video games, porn, and blow-up dolls to live sexual encounters with real women. (his opinion, probably exaggerated to counter my belief that men hate women's biology)

*I should take days off work and use it as an excuse to be a bitch all the time, like the ladies he works with (I've never felt it ok for me to do that and still don't...)

That made me feel better. It also took away some shame and I learned to handle my biology better. If you pay attention, the differences are dramatic over the course of the whole month, but they go in some order usually. Things like clear thinking, pain tolerance, and emotional control are so affected, but you can work with these changes sometimes, if you know when they're taking effect. "Should" isn't really part of it. He wants to of his own accord. I'm sure there are men who love their women just as much and have less interest in these particulars.

I wouldn't rely on it for birth control, but timing sensitive discussions with days you know you're less likely to lose your shit if he upsets you can be helpful to your relationship's longevity.

My man knows my cycle better than I do. I'll say "hey babe I got my period" and he'll respond with "about time". He knows from my moods, the changes in my complexion and in my body.

Perhaps controversial, but after five years together, the fiancee definitely keeps tracks at least subconsciously because he knows shark week is a week where he's getting a bj or two... and two weeks after that during ovulation, we need to be at our most careful with condoms. It's less about him walking on eggshells during PMS and more about him knowing how my status effects our sex life.

Update to this: since my comment on this post last week, my husband and I have decided to switch to the fertility awareness method + condoms/withdrawal at some times. He has indicated that he doesn't want to know the details, just the basics: is it a high-risk/fertile day? Do we need to put down a towel? He doesn't need to know the specifics, though he is smart enough to work them out if he cares.

What is the point of it? I can just inform him. If this is about sex, you can still totally have sex while on your period - in fact, it is healthy and helps with easing cramps. Also, if you are concerned with asking for things or whatever, why can't you just ask?
