I heard in China there's a 'break-up fee', which means that a guy (usually) pays his girlfriend a sum of money when they break up. Sounds like a funny practice, but unfortunately the usual reasoning behind this Chinese dating trend is pretty misogynistic: the money is meant as a compensation to the girlfriend for wasting her "prime" years of youth and that she now has to start over with finding a husband.

This, along the same vein, is historically what jewelry was for:

*Breach of Promise - It was also called breach of contract to marry

*Women couldn't have bank accounts and jewelry could be cashed in:

*Asian (specifically Japanese) women could only take what they could carry out of a divorce so jewelry was considered an appropriate gift. ( I need to find a citation for this but I remember reading it and most searches for "women, jewelry, history" on the internet get you an ad from some gem company about wedding rings and the lie about engagement rings symbolize love. Instead have an article about how shitty divorce/single motherhood is for women in Japan
