This man is total and utter scum. He already cheated like 10 times - that we know of - and has no respect for his family whatsoever.

The 'you do things to spite me' thing is total projection. He looks down on her, resents her and probably actively tries to punish her and make her suffer. It's only logical that he expects the same treatment in return or is at least scared for it to happen.
