I live in NYC and I get stared at and verbally harassed every SINGLE day in the summer. I have a lot of social anxiety so I’m hyper aware of people as it is.

It’s been helping a little to walk with my thumb on the pepper spray trigger and to remember that they’re just sacks of flesh carrying out monkey programming, and not actual people.

I know that putting me on edge is the purpose of cat calling and staring. Even men just standing there bothers me (they shouldn’t be allowed in public without a chaperone).

How can I free my mind and body from the anxiety response? Is it possible? How can I ever make peace with the disrespect of someone following me with their gaze or speaking to me at all knowing it’s making me uncomfortable? I can’t believe this is my life.

Edit: thank you all for these amazing replies💖💖This is exactly what I needed. I’m bookmarking this and rereading this thread before I leave the house. I will reprogram this brain if it’s the last thing I do. I don’t deserve to be afraid everyday because people don’t want to see me shine.
